Driving Route down N8 & N13Hi, planning on taking a rental 2WD little car in late October from Fes down the N8 to Azrou & then down N13 to Errachidia.
Can someone who has gone this route
1. confirm road condition, is it sealed or piste?
2. how long would it take allowing for plenty of photo stops
3. any issues with road at this time of year?
From there I will head along the N10 to Tinghir and to Ouarzazate and Marrakesh which seems like the road is a main sealed one.
I note from Tim Cullis' post on 17 Feb, there appears to be a new road being completed that may offer a more scenic route than this, but is the route I describe to Tinghir scenic?

1The N8 and N13 are sealed and I wouldn't expect any problems in October. It's probably a bit over 300km from Fez to Errachidia, so allow five hours plus stops. The section through Ifrane, Azrou and Timahdite is particularly scenic with limestone kharst, volcanos and cedar trees. After the Col du Zad you drop drop into the semi-arid region in the rain shadow of the High Atlas.
An alternative route might be to turn west at Rich on the R706 to Imilchil, then south on the R703 through Agoudal and Tamtattouchte down through the Todra to Tinerhir. Spectacular with very little traffic.
There are many hotels in Imilchil but I prefer Auberge Tislite which is on Lake Tisli a few km to the north.

4It takes me 5 1/2 hours driving time from Fes to Er Rachidia, plus 1 1/2 hours for photo stops and a stop to buy carpets in Midelt. Don't do as I once did and leave Fes about 9:30 a.m. and expect to get there before dark...it was not fun trying to avoid the pedestrians and horse-drawn carts on the dark road.

We're heading to Morocco next month for a 9-day trip. With your helpful advice about the Imilchil-Todra road now being mostly surfaced, is it reasonable to go from Imilchil to Ouarzazate via Tinerhir in one day in a 2WD (with enough time for pix)? Also, any recommendations for splitting up a trip between Azrou (we're arriving on a Tuesday morning so we can go to the souk and shop for rugs) and Imilchil? We want to see the l'Oum er Rbia and cedar forest south of Azrou in the afternoon, and are then hoping to stay Tuesday night somewhere between Azrou and Imilchil. Many thanks.

7Imilchil to Ouarzazate: daylight hours are long so you should be fine so long as you hit the road early, otherwise the final stage will be a bit of a drag driving into the setting sun.
Azrou to Imilchil: before leaving the Azrou area visit 'Le Mischliffen' and go down the road into the crater of the extinct volcano. After the sources and Agulemane Azigza you could stop at Hotel Zayane in Khenifra, then travel to Imilchil via El Ksiba and the R307. Good road, I've done it twice, once in each direction, in recent weeks.
