College Football is my life

For those who don't understand why Hunter S Thompson titled his suicide letter "Football Season is Over" don't really get it. Football is back, in particular college football, so I'm ready to live again.

I started a College Football Group over on LP's Groups for college football comments, if you're interested in chipping in at one place focused on the world's greatest sport/religion.

Meanwhile I make these four picks:

1. Bama beats VT, 27-9
2. Georgia beats Okla State 30-27
3. Oklahoma beats BYU 35-34
4. This season one wacky team -- a Utah, a Boise State -- will go unbeaten and everyone will talk about how wacky teams of the past -- a Utah, a Boise State -- can win on the big state. Before they're snubbed in the championship game for a one- or even two-loss team from the Big 12 or SEC.
Hidden track Big 12 wins NC over SEC.

"For those who don't understand why Hunter S Thompson titled his suicide letter "Football Season is Over" don't really get it." - Is that a sentence?

OP = Wanker = Staff = Or a Mod!

Following American sports doesn't necessarily make you a wanker. And he writes a lot better than you do.

I'll agree with most of his predictions, except that I'll go farther to say that the Sooners will absolutely CRUSH the Mormons . . . er, Cougars, rather. 38-14.

And an SEC team will win the national championship.

OP, your #4 isn't much of a prediction, since that seems to happen (or nearly happen) pretty much every year these days.

Obviously college football needs a playoff. But if I were designing the BCS from scratch, I'd do it like this:

  • 5 bowls
  • Champions of the big 6 conferences guaranteed a slot, unless they have four or more losses
  • The highest-ranked champion from the other D-1A conferences gets a seventh guaranteed slot (again, provided they have three or fewer losses)
  • No more than 2 teams from any conference
  • For the at-large slots, no 2-loss teams taken if there are undefeated teams unchosen; no 3-loss teams taken if there are one-loss teams unchosen.
  • No special treatment for Notre Dame--join a conference already.
  • For the championship game, no team with a loss can be taken if there is an undefeated team available.

Of course, there is no major event in world sport that's more transparently about the money than the BCS, so this would never, ever happen.

My pick (or hope) as a PAC 10 fan, is this the year someone finally knocks USC off their PAC 10 throne? USC has a really tough road schedule and a freshman QB. Will find out soon how good USC is when they go on the road to play Ohio State.

And if someone dethrones USC Please God let it be my CAL Bears. i want to see CAL in the Rose Bowl before I leave this world.

Pubes haven't you got a Soccer betting Pool to supervise? You know the one where you had to start over because you lost in the first round.

My first prediction of the 2009 college football season.

When the Yellow & Green Oregon Ducks play the Blue & Orange Boise ST Broncos on the Blue Turf tonight in Boise, get ready for an explosion of color never before seen in college football.

Hope you all got your big screen HD TV's fired up and ready to go

Whoops: guess that first sentence wasn't a sentence. How about this:

"Those who don't understand why Hunter S Thompson titled his suicide letter "Football Season is Over" don't really get the notion that football, American football, isn't just a game. And after a summer of bad TV, football is back, in particular college football, so I'm ready to live again."

Something like that.

Say, does anyone know any USC fans who are going to the Ohio State game?

Mr Penney, do you think all conferences should have conference championships? Always felt Big 10 and Pac 10 had that hidden advantage. Remember Alabama was undefeated before SEC game last year, and Missouri was #1 before Big 12 game year before...

Raisuli: To get you hyped-up about the Caliifornia Golden Bears go to www.fightmusic.com , click on Cal, and listen to "Fight For California" --- the fight song played after every Cal touchdown. Also listen to "Sons of California".

Mr Penney, do you think all conferences should have conference championships?

It would level the playing field, for sure.

I think it would also be good for the conferences involved. Despite occasional signs of life from UCLA, Cal and Oregon, the Pac-10 these days is USC and the Also-Rans. In the Big Ten, the recent appalling demise of the Wolverines has made things interesting, and just about everyone except Indiana has had a year here and there, but on average it's OSU, Michigan, and Penn State, with the other eight teams providing the sparring partners.

Playoff systems make it harder for one team to consistently dominate a league. A championship game is basically a one-round playoff, but even that should be enough to shake a league like the PAC-10 into some kind of parity.

The NCAA has a rule that a conference needs 12 members to have a championship game. That's why the Big Ten was so keen to get Notre Dame to join a few years back. (They've also considered trying to lure Mizzou or Iowa State away from the Big 12, but I don't think that's ever really gone anywhere.)
