Rainy season in Costa Rica ?? what about ?

Hi !

Can anyone help me to fill my backpack to fly pretty soon in costa rica (end of August, first two weeks of september) ?

I've read in LP guidebook that during that wet season, it's worth taking ... plastic boots (!!!) to walk in the forest ...

I experienced tropical rain in Malaysia, Cuba, Mexico or Vietnam, but apart from big showers, everything gets back to normal pretty soon ... so, I'm not keen on taking heavy European Equipment ...

On the contrary, I keep a wet souvenir of 10 days walking under constant rain in Ireland, being badly prepared ... I wonder how I hadn't palmed feet ...

So, is it really necessary to carry (heavy) rain protections (waterproof poncho, trousers or ... boots ???) to visit Costa Rica, and walk in the rain forest ?

Can anyone help me about it ?

Thanks a lot

JF

Where do you plan to travel? Rainy season in the North Pacific can mean sporadic rains since this is the driest part of the country, but if you're going to do serious hiking up in the rainforest, you really might need all your gear. Sept/Oct are the worst months and when it rains, it rains HARD. You can get soaked in 10 seconds.

If you are staying at a hotel or lodge near rainforest excursions, they will often have boots for you to use. If not, you can buy boots here really cheap - they are everywhere - just plain black rubber boots. If you are going for a long hike, I would not recommend wearing new boots, however. If you have hiked in other wet countries, you know what to expect. Many people just wear comfortable sneakers, realizing they will get wet. You really cannot keep your feet dry - with rubber boots, you feet are wet from sweat! It is true here also that after a heavy rain, there will usually be a break for you to dry out. Of course, if you have a problem with your feet already, you will want to be extra careful. Maybe extra socks? Extra small towel? Things like that. I would not recommend bringing heavy boots or hiking boots. If you are concerned about your body getting wet, you can bring a small poncho in a pouch but I wouldn't bother with rain pants -- too hot if you are walking a lot. Most Costa Ricans just don't worry about it -- they get wet and then they get dry. You probably have a rain cover for your backpack and that will work well.

I was surprised recently on a trip in the Caribbean lowlands. The choice for many experienced hikers. Teva sandals and a umbrella.

I'd recommend spending US$5 in Costa Rica on a pair of rubber boots, they'll come in very handy and they are what the locals use. At the end of your trip, donate them to someone who needs them so you don't have to carry them back. Win Win.

I just came back... and the rainy season in August really wasnt that bad. I heard its the worst in Oct-Dec. All I brought was a raincoat and flops and was fine. You could rent boots from the various parks if you feel like you need it... i just wore tennis shoes. have fun! manuel antonio is awesome... and i went to Santa Elena instead of Monteverde and it was beautiful as well.. i liked santa elena cause it was a HS project to try to protect more cloud forest land :)
