Cheap accomodation for a couple

HI,

My boyfriend and I will be in the Czech Republic in August this year.
We'll be in Prague and then Czechy Krumlov in the first week of August for a few days each.

and the question is what sort of cheap accommodation is available for couples in these places?

When I've been travelling with friends before I've stayed in hostel dormitories very cheaply....
....but when I've checked out prices for private double rooms in hostels they seem to be about three times more expensive than a bed in a dorm.
I know it's going to be more expensive but it seems extortionate!

Can anyone recommend anything? Any specific hostels or other places to stay would be great.

Would a pension be cheaper? but would it be ok to stay in one of these for just 2 or maybe 3 days?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks :)

A couple of years ago, Skippy Hostel in Cesky Krumlov had the cheapest double in town. It's a laid-back, hippy-ish kind of place, 10 minutes from the centre. They didn't have a website at the time, I'm not sure whether they do now, but they took reservations on the phone (try googling them). If I remember well, they only had one nice double room, so booking it ahead is probably best.

Prague is very expensive.
Nothing under 100 Euro. Even for a dump.
Hotel Belvedere very close to the center

You have chosen the two most expensive places in the Czech Republic. When I visited Cesky Krumlov as part of a big trip through the country in 2003 I paid about 3 times as much for a room there as anywhere else.

Outside these two places you can often get very nice accommodation for a reasonable price - for instance, earlier this month in the Krkonose mountains I paid 29 euros for a single room in a luxurious hotel with all health facilities, and about half that in a more basic place, though still with own room and en suite bathroom.

Given how much choice there is as to beautiful and interesting towns, magnificent scenary and options for outdoor activcites in the Czech Republic, you might want to consider going somewhere else if cheapness of accommodation is your main criterion.

#2 is wrong. Check www.hrs.com for hotels or pensions, there are offers in Prague for as low as € 35,-- for a double, not in the city center though, but at least near a metro station. I just stayed in Prague near the city center for € 55,-- for a double.

I have no idea about hostels.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions everyone :)

MartinLunnon - i'm interested to know where else in the country you recommend? we're not so keen on 'outdoor activities' more visiting cities/towns/interesting places....the mountains sound beautiful though!
Cheap accom is not our number one criterion, but it is important to think about!!

Would it be feasible to travel Prague > Cesky Krumlov > other destination eg Krkonose mountain > Prague (to then travel out of Czech Rep)
?? What do you think?

Thanks again

The Krkonose mountains are just about diametrically opposite Cesky Krumlov on the other side of the Czech Republic, and getting from one to another would be likely to be time consuming.

Near to Cesky Krumlov is the Sumava national park, with mountains nearly as high as Krkonose, and more forests, as well as a very large lake - I suspect that outside the main summer holidays there is a lot of accommodation to be had there at reasonable prices.

Between Prague and Cesky Krumlov lie Cesky Budejovice and Tabor, both historic towns worth a visit, I'd say. Unfortunately I don't think you can visit the Budvar brewery in C___ B___, otherwise it would count as a top tourist attraction for me (and too many of the cafes in the very pretty main square serve Pilsner Urquell!). Tabor played a major role in the religious wars in the 15th century and has fortifications to prove it.

There are so many other attractive towns and small cities all over the Czech Republic for me to list. Perhaps if Captain Oddsocks came back to the branch he could share some photos.

Private double rooms in hostels go for about 800-1000Kc, but that's for the room, i.e. 400-500Kc per person. With dorm beds at 300-350Kc, the private rooms are only 50% more expensive than dorms, not 3x the price, as you suggest.

There's a very well-located campground in Cesky Krumlov, right beside the river, 20 mins walk south of the centre. I can't quote you a price, but I'm sure it's cheap.
