Beaches in Tuscany or...?

In early July my partner and I are travelling to Italy for two weeks. We're spending one week in and around Rome and then our plan is to spend the next week in Tuscany (Siena, Pisa, and departing from Florence).

We'd also like to fit in some beach time (we're from the UK so we desperately need some sun and sea!) but haven't been able to find out anything much (positive) about beaches in Tuscany. One place place we've stumbled across is Castiglione Della Pescaia - has anyone been here?

Any other suggestions of good beach spots in Tuscany or even near Rome (Terracina is another option) would be most welcome!

Thanks,

J

Viareggio best of breed for me...

it is what it is...
it will be what it will be...
acceptance is the answer...
flexibility the key...

You could take the ferry from Piombino (I think that's where you take it from) out to Elba Island, which has some nice beaches.

Are U looking for party beaches or isolated spots?

The more I travel, the more places I want to travel to.

I am not a fan of Viareggio. It's a very urbanized, tourist-trappy Italian beach city. The beach is mostly divided up into little colonies where you can rent a beach chair and umbrella for a day and have someplace to change in and out of your swimsuit. On a busy day, it is wall to wall to wall people. There is a public beach as well, but it can get extremely crowded and has no amenities. It has a certain amount of charm, in the way that those defunct English seaside towns have charm - elegant old hotels along the strip; arcades and souvenir stores; fast food - but I certainly wouldn't want to spend very much time there. And for being an Italian town, we had some of the worst food of our trip there. It's overpriced and beyond mediocre. Sorry for the negative report, but really I wouldn't go back.

i could not agree more with Nyleve. Viareggio DOES suck, unless you want to party. That's why i asked OP that question above.

The more I travel, the more places I want to travel to.

Thanks everyone. Since we're after a bit of peace and quiet (we party enough in London) we've decided against Viareggio and are going with an earlier idea to base ourself in Castiglione Della Pescaia and do some exploring around there.
