Portugal Beaches - a helpful post

Reading so many posts asking information about Portugal, I decided to write one where I can talk to you about my favourite places. I'm portuguese, from Lisbon, 31 years old. This post is about the beaches.

Beaches - Portugal has a huge coast. In the north, the beaches are fine, but the weather is much more unstable. You get cloudy mornings and some sunny afternoons. The sea here is much more violent, the waves are bigger (some beaches are good for surfing) and the water is really cold (16 to 18 degrees).
In this area you have some beaches I recomend: MOLEDO, APULIA.
In the center you have also great beaches, specially for those who like to surf. The weather is good, however do not expect Algarve temperatures. Some beaches: PENICHE, AREIA BRANCA, NAZARÉ and a real pearl is BERLENGAS. This is a small island where you can go in the summer only. You catch a boat at Peniche. It's a very beautiful location, unspoilt, pristine ocean (a little cold) and with an ancient fort.
Gooing south towards Lisbon, the beaches are not so good because they're always crowded. Still, you can try: COSTA DA CAPARICA, PORTINHO DA ARRÁBIDA and SESIMBRA, in this last one you have diving facilities, but not so much of a underwater scenary.
Going south, by the coast, you reach one of my favourite places: COSTA VICENTINA. This area that stretches til the Algarve (Lagos) is really amazing. You have little fishering villages, few accomodation, and this is indicated for those who don't appreciate so much of a nightlife. Costa Vicentina is the ideal place for people who like big walks in deserted beaches, naturists , nature lovers and fish lovers. At night in some of the villages I describe, there are little bars, but do not expect party til morning. Watch out for a great music festival in the beach village ZAMBUJEIRA DO MAR. It's called Festival do Sudoeste, takes place between 7 to 10 August 2008 and the confirmed bands are CHEMICAL BROTHERS
  • BJÖRK
  • FRANZ FERDINAND
  • VANESSA DA MATA
  • FANFARLO
  • FAT FREDDY’S DROP
  • YAEL NAIM.

It's hard to pick a favourite, because this is my number one holiday location, but, I'd recommend: ODECEIXE, CARRAPATEIRA, ALJEZUR and MONTE CLÉRIGO.

Hi Sara

What a great post! This has definitely helped my best friend and I in planning some of our trip to Portugal in August. Can you recommend any hostels to stay in while in ZAMBUJEIRA DO MAR? We are keen to go to the beach music festival you mentioned.

Thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane
The music festival is great, I was there 2 years ago but i didn't stay in Zambujeira. I don't recommend that you stay there, because it's a small vilage and with the thousands of people that come to see the festival, it can be a little bit crowded. Anyways, if you enjoy the big crowd, you can camp in the festival area, they have a few facilities. It's a little chaotic, noisy but if that's your thing, go ahead :)

If you like cheap and clean, you have a great youth hostel in a place called ALMOGRAVE. This is a small village 20 km from zambujeira, with an amazing beach. Here's the link:
Pousada de almograve
I've seen the prices and for August, for a double with bathroom expect to pay 43 €.
Reservations: reservas@movijovem.pt

If you choose to stay at Zambujeira, you have pricey accomodations and more familiar ones. These last ones are usually good for the price: double bed, w/bathroom, very cozy and familiar style. I got you the names and phone numbers from a site. No guarantee that they speak english, but you can try!

Sara
Brilliant posts. I have gained lots of tips from your posts, thanks. Hope you dont mind i am going to ask a few more questions

I am heading to portugal with my friend for a weekend (2 days, 3 nights) in a couple of weeks, flying into lisboa. the plan was to hire a car and tour around small sea and rural villages, sample lots of local food, hopefully spend some time on a beach, sample more food and wine, local bar in the evening, maybe go for a countryside walk, or markets etc etc. just relax and soak up local life, hopefully avoiding too many tourist traps.

i was thinking about trying to head for the south coast but i am now thinking that might be a little ambitious. and hear sinatra is nice. but then also heard about a ferry from Setubal? and your post on Costa Vicentina. Is it windy on the west coast?

Do you think we will need to prebook accomodation beginning of July? We like clean, small places with character, pensions, guesthouses, local boutique hotels, those type of places - so not ur big souless hotels.

any suggestions, route or towns greatly appreciated.

cheers
tm
