Dulles International airport to BWI

We will be landing at Dulles International in June but we need to get to BWI (Baltimore International) or downtown Baltimore. Does anyone know if they have bus/shuttle service available to Baltimore or BWI? Of course the other option will be to rent a car but we are looking for cheaper alternatives. Thanks for any help.

shuttle bus (small fee) to subway? to B30 bus to BWI,
rent a car and you'll pay car fee, insurance (see faqs), gas, and probable one way fee (which may be more than the car fee)
- rent a car as your last resort -

HOW CAN I GET TO THE BALTIMORE AREA FROM WASHINGTON DULLES?

While Washington Flyer Coach Service does not offer service directly to the Baltimore area, travelers have several options for connections between Baltimore and Washington Dulles International Airport.

• Washington Flyer Coach Service to Metrorail, then connections to MARC trains at either Union Station or New Carrollton, MD
• SuperShuttle shared ride van service
• Washington Flyer Taxi service

Any route you take is going to take time.

The cheapest is a bus to Falls Church Metro (orange line), Metro to Greenblet (green line), then the B30 to BWI. However, that will easily take 3+ hours.
Metro. Use the trip planner.

If you actually want to get to Baltimore, take MARC from either Greenbelt or Union Station (red line), depending on where you want to go.

Fastest would be a cab. If you can find one to do it, figure on an hour or so.

Either BWI or downtown Baltimore??? BWI is a bit south of Baltimore. There is a free shuttle bus from the BWI train station to the airport terminal. Do you have another flight to catch? You do not mention time or budget constraints. There is a regular Metro bus, with no extra space for luggage, from Dulles that goes to Herndon and Rosslyn in suburban Virginia and L'Enfant Plaza in downtown Washington. From Rosslyn or L'Enfanta Plaza you could take the subway to Union Station and, from there, either MARC commuter train (only on weekdays) or Amtrak, to BWI or downtown Baltimore; or subway out to Greenbelt, Maryland and bus to BWI from there. A little quicker and more expensive than this is the aforementioned Washington Flyer bus from Dulles to the West Falls Church Metro station, from where you can get to Union Station or Greenbelt (change of trains required for either one). Using bus and subway would require carrying your bags up and down escalators when change subwayl lines. Fastest and most expensive, as mentioned, would be private shuttles (e.g., Super Shuttle), cab (maybe $75??) or renting a car. Dulles and BWI are far apart.

Cheapest:

DC Metrobus from Dulles to L'Enfant Plaza station. This bus is a little hard to find, it stops at the first island away from the kerb, on the ground level, near the left end of the airport as you face it from outside. There are some "Metrobus" signs around, just follow them or ask someone who works there.
When you get to L'Enfant Plaza, go into the Metro (subway train) and ride to Greenbelt station.
Then take the DC Metrobus to BWI airport.
Total cost about $8. Trip duration: 2.5 hours.

Fastest:

Taxi. Total cost about $80. Trip duration: 1 hour.

I hope you didn't book a tight connection. That trip is going to take you at least two hours, and more likely three hours.

Depending on where you're going, a cab will probably not cost significantly more than a shuttle for 2 or 3 people.

The OP asked for a cheaper solution. #3 offered the cheapest.

#3 did indeed offer the cheapest option. And plan for 3 hours.

An addendum to my previous post...
If this is during rush hour (about 6:30-9:30 am and 3-7 pm), plan for another hour or two, and consider yourself lucky if it's shorter. In the morning, the Dulles to DC route will be worse, and in the afternoon, the DC to BWI/Baltimore route gets bad.

Thanks for all the replies. We (me,wife & son) will be arriving from Bangkok around 10:30 in the morning so that puts us between the peak traffic times. I'm not trying to get to BWI to catch another flight. Does anyone know what the super shuttle shared ride van service charges per person? I think someone said the taxi fare would be around $80. I was hoping to be able to make the trip for around $100 so if I could get a rental car for around that price then that would be ok.

Thanks for all the replies. Here's what i've done. I googled Dulles International Airport and was able to get all the info I needed: Super Shuttle to BWI, $110.00, Washing Flyer Taxi, $115 and mid size rental car from Alamo with return to BWI, $70 + gas so will go with the rental car.

OP, it would help if you gave full details right off. Even with your added info it is not clear exactly where you are going, and for how long, and whether you might need a car there (I gather you will not need one). Not sure why you mentioned BWI if you are not catching a flight. Since it is the whole family, and you will not be flying out that day, I would consider renting a car, though that of course depends on exactly where you are going (i.e., someplace you can return the car?). Since you are a family, not a lone backpacker, I would forget the cheapest option. But you know your priorities.

I mentioned BWI because my brother, with whom we will be staying, lives a few miles from the airport (BWI). Thanks for your concern.
