Free Louvre Entry- 1st Sunday of month

I'm going to be in Paris for a few days next week. I understand that the major museums are free on the first sunday of the month - does this mean the Louvre will be mobbed?

If so, I'll go another day, because I like to take my time with art galleries.

What about other galleries/ museums in the area? Same state of business? Or somewhere you would recommend?

The free museums are mobbed on the first Sunday of the month. If you can afford a museum ticket, go another day.

Paris municipal museums are free every day - there are about 15 of those, from the Carnavalet to the Palais de Toyko to the Petit Palais to the Musée de la Vie Romantique.

You might try http://travelgadgetreview.com./top_ten_places_to_visit_paris_france.htm
There are a number of links there also to other things to do in Paris.

There are indeed a lot of people in the museum on free sundays. However, the Louvre is so big that you can definitely find sections of great interest but with few people. The main attractions such as Mona Lisa are very busy though.

I went on a free Sunday to the Louvre, and I was completely alone in the Scandinavian 18th century section.

Actually, I was not surprised.

Thank you all.

I think I'll go midweek. It's budgeted for. I'm not so fussed about the Italian renaissance period (including the mona lisa) but I like to take my time.

Isn't the permanent collection of the Louvre free everyday for the next six months?

Nope. However, the aerospace museum in Le Bourget is free for the next six months, along with a selection of other national museums throughout France.

The Louvre is vast- even on a free Sunday you can find relatively quiet spots- not the Mona Lisa (the world's most over-rated painting BTW) or Venus de Milo obviously.
Go after 3 pm and the crowds will have thinned.

Thanks for your input both here and on my rugby thread.

I ended up spending the sunday morning at the Musee d'Orsay. (I'd been planning the Centre Pompidou, but wasn't paying attention, missed the metro stop I had to chande at, so just stayed on until Orsay! This was a good thing).

I (amazingly, for me) got there about 9.15 so it wasn't too busy. And really enjoyed it. I'd forgotten how fab it is. And I didn't know the Pompidou doesn't open until 11, so would have been for too early, so all good in the end.

The afternoon I spent in the Auld Alliance watching the rugby.

I went to the Louvre on the Monday, and almost entirely failed to go to the wing holding Mona and Venus. Then, just before I left, decided I wanted to see the Raft of the Medusa. Didn't make it that far - the crowds of school parties drove me away.

So, cheers all. You were a big help.
