Erlian / Erenhot Info Fact Sheet

An Erlian Fact Sheet:
Just spent two days here and very tempted to stay on another...
This is a pleasant but fairly big town. Probably about 50,000 at the very least, and considering the building boom out of town, this will get bigger… Nonetheless, it is definitely worth one or two days, as it is both VERY cheap and easy to navigate.

If arriving from Beijing, especially on the Trans-Mongolian train, be sure to look out of the cabin side windows (the left of the train) at around 2020 (about 12-15 minutes before you enter town). The is a beautiful replica of the fighting dinosaurs in the distance. These were discovered in 2005 and are very unique. A stunning sight at dusk. Unfortuantely, the train form Mongolia comes by around midnight…

PLACES TO STAY:
There are two VERY cheap guesthouses, right opposite the Railway Station. Walk to the right, and they are both opposite the huge Waiting Room building.
10 yuan in a 3 or 4 bed dorm.
20 to 25 Yuan Singles. And its 30 for a double.
They both offer TV and a hot/cold water dispencer in the room. The first one has no running hot water shower, but the second one (next to the International ticketing booth – see below) has steaming hot tap water to mix in a bucket if you like.
A further 50m there is a better hotel with doubles for 80 yuan and triple for 90.
The Hotel directly opposite the Station charges 128 for a double. The Railway Hotel (to the left, as you exit the station) has a huge dorm with beds for 20 Yuan.
There are at least another ten hotels in the nearby area.

THINGS TO DO IN TOWN:
There is a wonderfully pleasant Dinosaur Park at the corner of Konglong Dajie (the second road leading up from the LEFT of the Station) and Qianjin Lu (this is the third major parallel road to station).
There is also a Dinosaur Museum narby, at same Qianjin Lu, pass the petrol station (on your left) and it is in the grey building, on your right. Also known as “Child En Spalace” (Children’s Palace?). The 10 yuan entry is well worth it. Note the short opening hours:
0800-1100 and 1500-1800.

GETTING AROUND:
Most things are within 15 to 20 minutes walk. Taxis charge a flat 3 yuan. There is a bus from the main bus terminal TO the border (about 2km away!) for 2 yuan.
A mini bus (ten people) to Zamiyn Uud charges 50 yuan and leaves when full. They try to charge an extra 10 yuan for the Exit Permit (but this should only cost five!). Jeeps to Zamiyn uud charge around 70 to 80 yuan.

There is a three times a week TRAIN between Erlain and Zamiyn Uud:
Monday No. 681 departs at 1600 arrives at 1625 (Mongolian time, hence total ride is 1.25)
Wednesday No. 683 depart at 1600 arrive at 1625.
Note that the FRIDAY departure No. 685 is at 1800 arriving at 1825.
Costs 66 yuan which includes all taxes and permits (its 41 yuan + 20 + 5).
NOTE that the International ticketing office is opposite the main Waiting Building, and not in the Station. This opens only at 0900am. DO NOT quee up with the hundreds of Chinese between 0800-1000. just go there AFTER TEN and it will be almost empty. There are ten carriges!

The Main Bus station is at the corner of Chahaer Jie. Walk up the main street out of Train Station, and take the second RIGHT (note the CITS on the corner). Turn LEFT at Chahaer Jie, and its on your left. Note the clock tower.

Buses to Beijing depart at 0630am and 1400,1420,1440,1600, 1620,1640. They take about 12 hours and cost 180 yuan.

There is only one departure a day to Datong at 0825am costing 83 yuan.

In both cases you will save a lot of money by taking the train.

INTERNET ACCESS
Costs 2 yuan/hour. One small place opposite the Train Station, another (bigger) one, as you turn out of the BUS station turn left and then right – it is 10m from the corner on your right.

CHANGING MONEY:
None of the small banks between the two stations change any money. There is a Small Bank of China between the Train station and CITS office, on your left (change $, pounds and Euros only!).
The main Bank of China is along Qianjin Lu, opposite the petrol station. They change Travellers Cheques for 0.75% commission.
The ONLY people that change TUGRIKS are the private Mongolian women at the entrance to the Personal Market, along Qianjin Lu and opposite the Dino Park.
I managed to get 156 T for the Yuan after a lot of haggeling…

SHOPPING:
The above Personal Market is a lovely modern Arcade with plenty of camping gear and clothes – many a lot cheaper then in Beijing!
There is a HUGE fruit and veg market along Sunite Jie, which runs parallel with Konglong Dajie (so the first right turning if coming from Dino Park. First LEFT if coming from Dino Museum…).
The is an EXCELLENT SUPERMARKET, with prices indicated and even cheaper than Beijing!. Walk up from the Railway Station to the second corner. Note the CITS office on the corner – the Supermarket is immediately opposite. No sign in English, so you need to look for it!

MONGOLIAN CONSULATE IN ERLAIN
JULY 2007 UPDATE:
The Consulate has now moved to near the main long distance bus station.
Erlian Fandian no longer exists...

From the main RAILWAY station walk straight ahead until the second junction (CITS office on your left).
Turn here RIGHT and walk for another 5 minutes until you cross Chahaer Jie.
The bus station is up this street to the left, but you need to carry on the very same road for another 10 minutes. There are now no more buildings or restaurants, but you will see the Consulate on your LEFT hand side about ten minutes beyond the BUS Station. Keep on walking, you are not lost...

Taxi seem to charge a flat rate of 3 yuan.

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday 0830-1200 only.
Same day processing costs US$55 or Yuan 465, which makes this a VERY expensive option!
The only cheaper option is ONE WEEK processing which costs US$25.

Hi guys - am trying to find out a bit more about the Zammin Uud to Ulan Bator train...

From what I've discovered on LP (mainly from manulike :)) and other sites, there are 3 trains, departing Zammin Uud at:

- 07:10
- 17:50 (or 17:00 or 18:00?)
- 23:00 (or 21:00?)

other posts indicate that these trains are about $12 (USD i presume) for a softsleeper? can anyone confirm this? any idea on how long-ish these trains take? what about booking them? if we were to arrive in Zammin Uud at about lunch time, do you think we'd be able to get a ticket for the afternoon/night train on the same day (looking at travelling next week or so, not a crazy busy season, i hope!)

also wondering about times for trains going the other way (UB to Zammin Uud)

thanks for any insight

Afternoon/evening trains from Zammin Uud are overnight trains and arrive the following morning.

Whether you can get a ticket same day will depend upon the time of year and the day of the week which you neglected to mention. In summer I suspect it is harder than in winter ;-)

Contact a guesthouse for information about the reverse. There is NO website for the Mongolian railway.

It is high time that I do an orginised page on the train time tables - so will post that later today.

As for Zamiyn Uud (ZU) departures:
There is no 0710 dep - it is the ARRIVAL time of the UB train...
The 2200 dept leaves on Monday Wednesday and Friday (perhaps also add a 2315 dept of K3 and K23 on Wednesday and Tuesdays - but probably no seats!) - NOTE all these dept have SOFT SLEEPER ONLY and cost 36500 Tg!

The ONLY cheap option is the DAILY train No 275 dept Zamiyn Uud (ZU) at 1750:
arrives Sainshand (SS) at 2310 (2400/6200 Tg for hard/soft sleeper)
Dept SS at 2335 and arrives UB at 2310 - but many waiting guest house owners!
Price to Ayreg is 3300/8400 ; Choir is 3900/9500 and ZU to UB is 5100/12100 Tg.

I just want to add my visa run experience onto this fact sheet.

Some US citizens may choose to go to Erlian for a border run, since US citizens do not need a visa for Mongolia. Others in a real mess may also make the same choice, although they will need to get a visa.

The bus to Erlianhaote leaves Beijing from LuiliQiao bus station which is a little south of Beijing West train station. Its possible to get there by public transport to save money- first get to the metro and take to the Metro station nearest to Beijing West (sorry no LP handy so I forget the name of it). When you get out there is a bus heading south on the third ring road- it was bus 631, I believe. Get off at Luiliqiao south stop. the station is about 500 meters west down a small road.

The overnight bus was 179 Yuan, with little beds, and took about 12 hours arriving at 4:30 in the morning when it is bitterly cold. A nice Mongolian guy took me to this little guest house where we slept til about 8 am.

The border: I thought I could go across the border without paying the 50 yuan each way for the jeeps, but this was more difficult than I imagined. Its possible to take bus 1 from the market area to the border post. Bus 1 also goes to the bus station. At the border post, at first they would not let me walk to the immigration office, but after some help from an officer who could speak English, he persuaded them.

However, you CANNOT walk between the Chinese immigration post and the Mongolian one, which is where the problem was. I waited for a car to pass, but the guy wanted 50 yuan to go what was about 800 meters. I tried to bargain, but he just waved me into the car, after which he tried to threaten me into paying him 50 yuan. So my advice is, make sure people understand how much you are willing to pay them before you get into the car.

After Mongolian immigration, I just turned around and started to head back in the other direction. Again, I had to wait for a car. After about 30 minutes, I finally found one willing to take me over for 20 yuan. The Mongolian border people are very nice. The Chinese ones were a bit confused and checked everything carefully.

After crossing through Chinese immigration again, I took bus 1 to the bus station. The buses back to Beijing are 200 yuan, but there is also a van going for 200-240 yuan, which is probably faster. I took the van for 240, but think I could have bargained for better.

Warning: Some people in Erlian are not the kindest, so be ready. Make sure all the prices you are willing to pay are firmly agreed upon in advance.

Altogether, I left at 4 pm one day and arrived back at 12 midnight the next, about 32 hours. Including going to the bus station early the first day to get a ticket, about 35 hours. Altogether it took me about 480 yuan for transport (including taxis, buses, etc), then add on other money for food.

Best of luck!

I forgot to mention that it was bitterly cold. I stopped off at the market to buy some gloves for 5 yuan. Absolutely necessary- although I survived without a jacket by wearing about 4 layers.

WARNING: I just wanted to post a note so hopefully you can avoid the mistake we made re travel from beijing to ub...

We were unsure of which bus station to head to in beijing to buy the ticket for the sleeper bus to erlian and were really short on time. We were staying at the Wangfujing HI and they said that they could organise pick up from the hostel/ sleeper bus / hotel at erlian for a few hours/ travel across the border/ soft sleeper train to UB. For 620y.

Sounded great... it was hell. The driver turned up to take us to the sleeper bus at 530pm (he was meant to pick us up at 3/4pm). We got stuck in traffic and arrived at the bus station with the bus having left.

To cut a long story short we left Beijing at 9pm, in a car FULL of people and baggage and with a driver who kept stopping to go to sleep. We arrived in Erlian at 8am with no time for the hotel we had paid for. And very much sleep deprived. The rest of the journey did luckily go to plan.

It is about half the price if you book all this yourself, so DO NOT get conned like we did.

(This combo ticket thing is sold in a number of beijing hostels and organised by the driver from New Dragon hostel)

(It was suggested that I should add this thread to the Erlian/Erenhot Info Fact Sheet)

Mongolian visa at Erlian and crossing the border by bus

Just to add some recent (22 June) info or confirm what's already known: there's no problem getting a Mongolian visa in Erlian. I took my passport in (British) at 10:30, picked it up at 12, and could have (although I waited till the following day) been on that day's 13:30 bus to Zamen Uud, 9km away in Mongolia, and on the 17:55 train to Ulaanbaatar. The visa price is steep: 495 yuan (around 45 pounds/US$70/50 euros) for 30 days! However, nothing but the filled out application, the money, and a photo are required of you (no proof of accommodation, onward ticket, etc.).

Crossing: travelling on the bus (40 yuan plus 5 yuan official exit fee) means you avoid the nightmare waiting times for processing you experience on the train as you cross. From Erlian bus station to Zamen Uud bus/train station: one hour and fifteen minutes!

Mongolian Consulate directions: walk down the road that runs directly in front of the clock outside the train station. Turn right when you get to the CITS on the left hand corner (it seems to be permanently closed, by the way). It's straight all the way from here. After a few minutes you will cross Chichaer Street (Chichaer Jie). You will see the bus station (the one you'll be wanting) on the left (beige building featuring two fake clocks: they're set at 12:35, but at least they're right twice a day!). Continue walking for a few more minutes until you see the blue, red and yellow Mongolian flag on the left. You never actually enter the building, but do everything at the small office at the gate.

Trains to Ulaanbaatar from Zamen Uud: the one at 17:55 takes 16 hours (only hard seats and soft sleepers were available when I arrived, but the soft sleeper was only around 27000 MNT (130 yuan)); the one at 22:30 takes 12 hours. Buy the tickets from the modern shiny black passenger services centre next to the old railway station buildings, yards from where the bus from Erlian drops you off.

Money changing/ATMs: the bank in the square opposite the train station was offering only 200 MNT to 1 yuan, while the banks (there are at least three of them) in the aforementioned passenger services centre were offering 209, the same rate as on an internet site I checked. That suggests that they offer decent rates on most currencies, although you'll obviously have more choice in UB. I spotted at least two ATMs bearing VISA/Mastercard, etc. stickers in the building, as well (from what I hear, all the major cards are accepted these days).

It's a lot of money for 30 days. I'm not sure what the deal is in Hohhot's Consulate (a bit more hassle, I've heard), but it's probably worth doing it there instead if you happen to be bypassing Beijing.

Hi guys,

I just came back from Mongolia and took the budget way from Beijing to Mongolia via bus and train without going to Zamyn Uud to catch a train. I took an overnight bus from Beijing to Erlian (reaching ard 3.30a.m). Later I took the evening train (5p.m) at Erlian train station to Ulaanbaatar via Zamyn Uud. If i am not wrong, this train from Erlian only available few days a week. So before you want to catch a train in Zamyn Uud, can do an enquiry at Erlian train station for the train availability. This will save you a lot of hassles. I also need to top up $40,000 tugruk when boarding this train besides the train ticket that i bought in Erlian.

Thanks for the update. I believe that the train crosses the border 4-5 times a week. Once a week, on Wednesdays it is the #3/4 from Beijing headed to Moscow; once or twice a week, Tuesdays and sometimes Saturdays, it is the K23/24 from Beijing to UB and twice a week, from Hohhot to UB (not sure which days currently).

hi
referring to the Erlian border crossing point.

i received the following e-mail (mejet69@yahoo.com ; http://www.terramongolia.com/mongolia_info_en.html)

If your country has consulate of Mongolia, you can't get visa at the border. For this moment I don't know if they give in Zamyn-uud or not (Erlian is chinese part of the border), I know in UB airport it is possible if you don't have consulate in your country.

and
lenazavaroni wrote (29-Jun-2009 19:58):

1.
does anybody know it is possible to apply for a 30 day mongolia visa on arrival at the border town of erlian for this moment?

referring to manulike 's post (26-Jul-2007 22:50):
The only cheaper option is ONE WEEK processing which costs US$25.

how much do i have to pay for a new mongolian visa (one week processing). does the 25usd fee remain unchanged; i am a polish passport holder.

2.
once i arrive in ulaan baator i want to extend the mongolian visa (right upon arrival - not after expiry of the initial visa). i would like to stay for longer than 60 days in mongolia (around 70-75 days). have you got any experience how difficult such an extension is (i know i will have to arrange an invitation letter)?

thanks a lot

To the best of my knowledge it is possible to get a Mongolian visa at the consulate in Erlian. I don't recall any recent posts regarding the price of a visa there as most travelers don't want to spend that much time there.

For information regarding extending your visa, this must be done within 7 days of arrival in UB. I believe these two threads describe the process: Mongolian Visa Extension and Visa extension
