Barcelona Neighborhoods

Hi There...
I will be visiting Barcelona at the end of June and staying for 4-5 days. I've narrowed my search of accomodations down to 2 hostels. One is in the Gothic district and near the cathedral. The other is very close to the Passeig de Gracia metro station. My question is this: are these hostels in areas where I can explore Barcelona easily on foot? What about safety? I am traveling alone and want to feel safe if I am walking at especially at night. Thanks for any and all advise.

Both are in a central location, but I think you feel more comfortable at night around Passeig de Gràcia than in the dark alleys of the Barri Gòtic.

I second that. Most things are in walking distance, it may take some time on foot but there s plenty of stuff to see on the way to keep it interesting. Also, there is a very good metro network. Metro's run until 12 on weekdays, I believe 2 am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays.

No worries about safety - there is petty theft around the very touristy areas (the ramblas), but nothing to be afraid of. Keep an eye on your belongings and don t do stupid things, and you ll be more than fine.

Aribo and Peeje are right. Both will be safe enough , but you will feel safer in the P de Gracia hostel.
the most common theft is snatching your bag from your arm with a motorbike, so try to keep it in your arm on the street side when you are strolling.

Susan, if it's Barcelona Point on Passeig de Gracia don't think twice (if you didn't already book!). Gothic Quarter can be noisy, and many hostals are no windows, small stairwell, etc. Passeig de Gracia is one of the best streets in the city (2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites) and as far as I know it only has 1 hostal (great place). Gothic Quarter has tens of hostals all of varying quality, so follow the rest of the advice here.

Have a great time!
