South Omo

Hi,
I am arriving in Addis on July 29th. I have about 10 days before being joined by friends. Is anyone planning on going down to south Omo at that time? In need of a person to make up numbers and spread costs? Also, any good recommendations for guest house for 2/3 nights in Addis?
Thanks
Rachel

Budget tourism in São Tomé e Principe ?

Olá !
I´m planing to go to STP. I read the threads and posts here in the forum with a lot of interest. But all the contributions here do not answer my basic main question:
Did anybody travel in STP with a small budget, using the local transport system and sleeping in small and cheap hotels where the locals stay, too. ?

Is there a bus system in STP, and if so, can you reach interessting beaches and / or the so called “roças” by using the local buses ?

How much to they charge for a night in a "roça" normally ? If someone of you has been there, how much did you pay at Roça Monte Forte or Bombaim ?

Did anybody stay over night in small towns like Porto Alegre, São João de Angolares or Trinidade ? Is there any budget acomodation to find in these towns and others out of the capital ?

All the reports in this forum seem to base on relatively expensive trips with rented cars and ... more »

Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

Went to Ethiopia mid April for two weeks. Had already covered quite a lot of Ethiopia during my previous 4 week visit in 2012 (and loved it!).
One of my biggest wishes - since seeing a documentary about is some 10 years ago - was travelling into the Danakil Depression. It not being high season anymore it proved impossibe to find a group to join. I contacted Gerard Pennings from Ethiopian Impressions in Addis who had organised some of my travelling last year. He warned it would not be cheap but recommed A.K. Ahadu in Mekele to go and speak to.
So that is what I did. I travelled to Mekele and went to their offices just behind the Axum hotel where I spoke to Carmen. She proved to be most helpful and very friendly.

I decided on doing a solo 3 day tour to the Danakil (just Dalliol and the Salt Lakes) and combine it on the way back with a visit some rock churches in the Gheralta Cluste... more »

Livingstone to Windhoek

Hello, can anyone tell me what options my family of 3 (including a 7 year old) has in getting from Livingstone to Windhoek? I've heard of Intercape bus line and am curious to know people's experiences. Is that something we could book from Livingstone a day or two in advance, or should we book sooner? Also, can we get our visa to Namibia at the border? Thanks for words of guidance!

Stunning Ethiopia Tours

After an amazing trip with Stunning Ethiopia Tours to the Northern Historical Route of Ethiopia in 2012, we did not hesitate to book with them again for our 12 day trip to the Omo Valley and Harrar. Ermias Ketema provided lots of information when booking the trip and was happy to adjust the itinerary to suit our preferences.

We started the trip with a city tour of Addis which included visiting the National Museum and Museum of Ethnology which is particularly relevant for excursions to the South. We also visited Mount Entoto, Mercato and finished with a traditional dinner at a cultural restauant. The food was excellent and we got to see lots of dfferent styles of dancing from the different tribes and regions of Ethiopia.

Highlights of our tip include visiting Shashamene which is home to the Rastafarian Tabernacle, the sunrise boat trip we took at Lake Chamo where we saw crocod... more »

Taxi ón zanzibar / ferry from DAS to ZAN

I'm going to Zanzibar the 1st of June, and I've booked hotel on "Coral rock hotel" in Jambiani. The hotel has a taxi service, and offers to pick us up at the harbor for a price of 60UsD, it's a drive for around 1h (45km) Can someone tell mé if that's a fair Price? And if not, how else to get a taxi? Maybe someone can hook me up with a driver?

Furthermore I'm looking for advices/what-to-do about the ferry from Dar es salaam to Zanzibar? Which one to take? The price? Etc. etc.

Thank you

Travellng solo to Tanzania

I'm a 32 year old woman who will be traveling solo to Tanzania in August/September. Does anyone have any experience with this? how easy will it be to meet other solo travelers?
My plan is to climb Kili, safari and the off to zanzibar. Should I book tours in advance or will it be better to organise it when I get there? I'm just a bit worried I will end up together with just couples...
Any tips are appreciated :)

Ambositra to Morondava

Comming from Ranomafana I intend to travel onwards to Morondava. Is there a reasonable transport from Ambositra on RN34? Or do I have to return to Antsirabe and go on RN34/RN36?

Which way does the Postbus from Fiana to Toliara take? Do you think they would pick me up in Ambositra or Antsirabe, if I make a reservation when I pass through Fiana soem days before?

The most comfortable way would certainly be to travel by Transport Première Class on their Tana - Morondava connection. I inquired by email but they did not answer.

So what is your recommendation for my trip (in June)?

Kind regards, Gerald

From Dar Es Salaam to Arusha - by bus?

Hi

I'm going to travel from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha. To take the plane is not an option because that is too expensive.
In Lonely Planet Guidebook East Africa (the newest one) it suggest to take Dar Express, Metro Express or Ngorika.
I'm right now in Uganda and my Lonely Planet guidebook has not always worked well with bus companies. Some of them have been closed, and others are not going the rutes it suggest. Right now I'm going for the Dar Express.
Therefore I would like to hear if any of you have any experience taking that company or some of the others bus companies? Are they still running?
Are there any other options to go from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha?

Thank you!

Hippo

African Lion 2013 cancelled

In another thread DavidDaoud pointed out the news about the cancellation of the annual joint Morocco-US military exercise: "Khamlia! Big news. Do a google search on 'african lion 2013 cancelled' read the first 3 articles!"

There's more background to this at Morocco Board.
