Know any good places to catch some live music in Cairo? We like ethnic/traditional music and also mixed with electronic.
We will be in Cairo in the second week of January.
Shooting a 3 year tv series in Africa. Each country for 3 weeks, starting with Egypt. Our producer wants to know the situation on buying a car in either Egypt or Sudan. His reason for asking is that we know about the (roughly) 500 USD ferry to get from Egypt to Sudan, and if a car is significantly cheaper in Sudan, it makes sense to hold out on a car until we get to Sudan to avoid the ferry charge.
1) Are cars cheaper to buy in Egypt rather than Sudan?
2) I realize this is a pending issue, but is there any definitive info on the opening of the road between Egypt and Sudan?
3) We need a car that is solely for transportation of crew members(3 total). Any advice on which make? model?
4) Any advice on not getting ripped off?
Thank you all!
Need some help and advice please, I've got a dirt cheap ticket to Hurghada but it's not my kinda place. Flight arrives on the 24th and departs on the 31st of December. My idea is to get out of Hurghada ASAP and see some less 'package holiday' areas, although I'm well aware there are touts everywhere!
I suspect Abu Simbel might be a bit too far away on this occasion but I'm not sure, and what could you see on the way between Luxor and Abu Simbel? Would 2/3 days be enough in Luxor? And is there anywhere near Hurghada I could spend a day or two chilling on a quiet beach on the way back to get my flight? Could something like this work? -
Day 1-2 = Travel to and experience Luxor
Day 3-4 = Travel to and experience Abu Simbel
Day 5-7 = Slowly head towards Hurghada for return flight, maybe go somewhere nearby and hit a beach for a couple of days.
I'd like to live pr... more »
Any recommendations on a nice place to stay for a couple with a budget of 20 Euros per night? Thanks
Hi. I'm in Luxor and looking to hire a car to travel to Aswan this SATURDAY 22 December, with some stops along the way. I would welcome other travelers to share expenses and also would like to hear recommendations for reliable, decently priced drivers (ideally with some English). I had planned to take the train but the prospect of seeing Edfu and some traditional Egyptian life along the way makes me favor hiring a car.
In the past I have stayed at the Canadian Hostel and arranged a tour with them once I got there. I tried to contact them but haven't heard back. Does anyone know if they are still in business or have other recommendations for accommodation in Cairo and arranging a tour when we land?
Thanks in advance
does anyone know any gym or fitness club in downtown cairo which offers dance /self-defence classes?
Hello Everyone, I have been reading the forums for a while and its my first time posting a query. I'm doing a 3 country trip (Israel/Egypt/UAE). The Egypt segment is from 30 Dec 2012 - 10 Jan 2013. Not including the fly in-out days i will only really have 10 days to spend exploring the country. I'm into the culture, history, food and sights so I have mapped out the following days. Any input from our wonderful expat/traveler community is much appreciated! :)
30 Dec - Arrive Cairo late (11pm) - rest!
31 Dec - Cairo (Egyptian Museum, local cafes)
1 Jan - early train to Alexandria (library, sights, museum, eat fish!) train back to Cairo
2 Jan - Cairo (Khan El Khali, Al Azhar Mosque)
3 Jan - switch hotel to Giza (Pyramids)
4 Jan - Giza (Pyramids, lunch at Oberoi Mena) (at night take Sleeper Train to Aswan)
5 Jan - arrive early at Aswan (Temple of Philae, rest!)
6 Jan... more »
I've read through some of the posts already, but still have the following questions on two things: Nile Cruise and Desert safari. Many many thanks in advance for any suggestions and answers!
1. Any difference to take th cruise from Luxor to Aswan vs Aswan to Luxor? I've noticed there were alot more advertised cruise from Aswan to Luxor. Is it any particular reason why one should be preferred over the other?
2. I know people have suggested to check out the boat before boarding, which we will do. But any particular good experience with any company worth recommending? I'm particularly interested in GOOD egyptologist guide and descent accommodation. GOOD food will also win brownie points.
3. How many days should we take the boat? 3D2N or 4D3N or 5D4N? Which sites are must-see as part of the cruises - so that we won't have to do them on our own befor... more »
I'll soon be on my way to Jordan and Egypt and the only problem I have to solve is how to get from Sharm airport to St Catherins/Mt Sinai and back the following day. Any help appreciated.
I'm hoping someone might be able to provide me with some recent information on traveling to Dakhleh Oasis. I'm planning to go to the oasis from Cairo by bus, but I've heard there's a shortage of fuel.
Is it still possible to travel from Cairo to Dakhleh and back again by bus? How's the situation in Dakhleh itself? Is there any fuel available to take mini-buses to various locations/villages in the oasis?
Thanks for your help!
A few weeks ago I asked about whether it was safe to travel to Egypt. Now I've been here a week: four days in Cairo and 3 in Luxor (with 2 weeks to go on my trip), so I'll share my experience.
It's a shame that people are not coming. The greatest danger in Cairo is the same as I experienced it to be when I was here once before: walking as a pedestrian. I'm totally serious. But tourists have dealt with that for a long time, and I haven't heard of a lot of deaths. It can be scary, though.
My sense is that Cairo is safer than most big cities tourists go to. Yes, I've heard there is more crime--e.g., thefts from tourists and others--because there is less of a police presence. I don't know what the statistics are, but the feeling one gets is that it's safe. Remember, it was very safe before. Just be careful as you would be in any big city. You see women walking alone at night and fam... more »
I'm trying to book a cruise on the Nile to see the sights in Egypt. I just found a company that is 150USD less than the quote from the one my friend used. Now, I'm wondering if its a scam. They are called GSC (General Shipping Company) TOURS and have asked for 25% wire of the total to secure my spot. I'm skeptical so I put it out there. I saw a similar post from another person who was skeptical about the same company. They have a website but I can't find any reviews on them..thanks for your feedback
Hello, I'm looking to extend my tourist visa (American, 30 day VOA at airport) in Cairo, or elsewhere in Egypt. if you have recently done the extension could you tell me how many months you have got and what's the experience like? Someone I met at Dahab hostel received a one-year extension just recently - not in Cairo, but I forgot where he has got it. I'd prefer to do it in Cairo, but am willing to travel if I have to. Thanks!

Guys, I've got a doubt. I've read a lot about Egyptian's being highly interested in money and getting away from their country. I may have read too much about it actually, and I'm sure what I'm going to say now will be awful for some of you, so my apologies, but, some people have sent me messages on Couchsurfing and I feel like they're trying too hard, like they want to spend some (whole) days with me (I'm not talking about getting hosted here but only meeting for coffee), or tour the city with me but in a way like "I'm going to show you the pyramids in Giza and then...". Sometimes it feels like a tour. And I'm like "come on, it's just coffee, we're not gonna get married". I mean, on Couchsurfing you meet someone, go out, have fun, and then maybe you see that person again, maybe you don't, but it's ok, it's not that you bind the other one for days. I notice all the people who write are... more »
