Solo in Malawi

Hi everyone!

I plan to spend 1/2 months in Monkey Bay (Malawi) - September to October. After which i am going to fly to Thailand and either trek north to the Himalayas or south into Indonesia. This will all be done on a shoe string as i have about 5k+ saved but want this to all last a year minimum.

I have a few questions for those who have traveled on foot and largely solo in these areas.

-The biggest is about transport in Thailand and south east Asia, if it is easy and cheap to obtain at short notice even outside of cities and tourist hot-spots? I would like to avoid air travel as much as possible (even tho it is the cheapest) as you miss so much of the landscape.

-I may be doing allot of walking/cycling between destinations. Is basic accommodation abundant where ever i go or are there large areas that i might get stuck and need a tent?

-Luxuries i can do with out,... more »

Erg Chigaga trip to celebrate my wife's birthday

Hi there,
I was after a little advice on the following itineries please? The wife and I have been to Marrakesh several times having fallen in love with the place the first time we went there but we've not ventured further, until now.

The main reason for the trip is to watch the sunset on Sat 12th Jan and spend the night in the desert. Her birthday is the 13th and I want her to watch the sunset on the last day of her twenties.

We have two itineraries up for consideration:

Plan A - 4days
Arrive Friday 11th Jan at 1120 into RAK
Fri night - Ouarzazate
Sat night - sunset in Erg Chigaga
Sun night - Marrakesh
Mon - day trip to mountains
Depart Monday 14th Jan at 2145 from RAK

Plan B - 5 days
Arrive Thurs 10th Jan at 1120 into RAK
Thurs night - Imlil
Fri night - Ouzarat/Zagora (a late arrival here would be fine)
Sat night - sunset in Erg Chigaga
Sun night - tbc, ... more »

Dakar to Ziguinchor Boat - Buying Tickets

Hello,

I am hoping to purchase tickets for the Dakar-Ziguinchor boat for Tuesday, 8 January. I will only arrive early in the morning on Monday, 7 January. As I understand, that might not be soon enough to purchase a ticket. There is a travel agency called Diambone, which I will contact, but their website says they require 3 weeks advance notice.

Does anyone know if I will not, in fact be able to buy a ticket on the Monday prior to departure?
Does anyone have experience with this Diambone agency, or any other agency?

Any other experiences with purchasing these tickets would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Luggage check in ADD

Hello,

I'm transiting through Addis on my way back home from Berbera and will have 12 hours to kill. I was wondering whether there was a luggage check at the airport. I'd like to get some shopping done and would rather not lug my backpack around or take a room at a guest house just to store the bag.

Thank you,

MC

Rwenzoris - can they be climbed independently?

Hi all,

I have read a lot about the two companies that run Rwenzori treks. However, I have also heard that some climbers organized independent climbs outside of these companies, using guides referred to them and starting from the park gate.

Any well-informed advice would be appreciated.

Travel buddy 28th December - 8th January

Hi Everyone!

I will be in Uganda on the 25th December, staying until the 13th January. I will stay in Kampala with a friend for a couple of days. From Kampala I travel by public transport to Kisoro to visit the mountain gorillas. I'm traveling alone and just seeing if anyone is interested in a (budget) travel buddy to spend some time in the western region of Uganda. Let me know! I'm a female from the Netherlands.

VISA on arrival in Addis

Hey all,
I have read multiple places that you can only get a single entry 1 month VISA on arrival.

I had planned on staying for 3 months and thought I would have to leave and re enter.

I just asked nicely and they gave me a 3 month VISA, no questions. I did ask for a multiple entry and that was refused.

just fyi.

tefsa trekking prices?

I have heard great things about TEFSA treks around lalibela and was interested in going on one of these. I was quoted 978bir per person per day which seems quite expensive to me... Can other people confirm that this is the going rate or suggest a way that you can keep the price down?
thanks
Luke

Mombasa info pleasee :)

Okay, so ive signed up to do 6 months volunteering in june 2014 in mombasa and to be honest i could do with a little more info from anybody that has been before. My main concern is the high risk of malaria, did anybody have any issues with this and if so is the help thats available adequate? Also , how much do malaria tablets cost from the UK? Since im going for 6 months i reckon this is going to be quite pricy :/. Right weather! What weather will i expect from the beginning of july until the middle of december? Just so i know how to pack! .. Any info will be much appreciated ! Thank you :)

Dakar-Banjul-Kedougou

I am a American, recent college graduate and I have been living in Dakar for the last three months. I recently took a trip down to The Gambia and over to the Kedougou region of Senegal. I have found that other posts of trip summaries were helpful so I figured I would describe my itinerary and some suggestions for others interested in any part of my route.

Dakar-Banjul:
I got to the gare routiere in Dakar just before dawn to make sure that I would catch one of the earliest sept-places to Karang, the Senegalese border post closest to Barra, where you can get a boat to Banjul. The sept-place costs 6000CFA plus 1000CFA for baggage though I got the feeling that this was a tubaab (white person) tax as all I had was a small backpack; I have paid 500CFA for baggage on other rides which was a bit more reasonable. I only waited for about 40 min. for the transport to fill up and then it was... more »
