Somaliland visa now available at all border points - and other news...

Just want to let everybody know... In January 2013 I arrived at the Wajaale land border crossing with my travel buddy and we both received a one-month visa on the spot for 30 USD. Our passports were US and Canadian. We had no online visa, nothing at all, except that I had read that visas were available on arrival at all entry points. I can now confirm that it's true and everything worked out fine. Bring 2 photos.

Also, although a security escort is not necessary anymore out side of Hargeisa, there is apparently a conflict between the chief of police and the head of tourism. The head of tourism says it isn't necessary anymore, but the head of police says it is and it has recently been enforced at checkpoints, which are manned by the police. Travellers can get a waiver for the armed escort requirement from the police station (across from the MIG monument), and it's apparently easy to... more »

Somalialand - Dijibouti to Hargeysa

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had done this route into/out of Somaliand? I was looking to see a bit more of the country, and was pondering the road less travelled, but still travelled.

Map sites show a prominent road that roughly follows the border from Savlac to Hargeysa via Borama. Is it possible to travel this route, by bus or hitching etc? I've seen that jeeps cross the desert in the faq for $20, which seems cheap.

Is the border crossing particularly problematic at Loyada?

Also, I was wondering about the route from Hargeysa to Berbera via Burco, is this ok?

Thanks for any advice/help

Somaliland tips and advice

Hi guys,
Just thought it would be a good idea to share my tips and info on my trip to Somaliland in December, 2012. Hopefully it’ll help anyone else going there.

So firstly I was in Ethiopia and I got the visa in 20 minutes at the Somaliland Liason office in Addis. It was 40 bucks and really simple. Just a quick form and a photo and that was it.

I flew with Ethiopian airways to Berbera (Hargeisa is still under construction). At the airport immigration is quick and simple and everyone is willing to help you out. There’s a 34 dollar entry fee too which everyone has to pay. I went straight to Hargeisa and all the airlines provide transport there. They’re just small buses direct from Berbera airport to the airline offices in Hargeisa. No escort is required too so no need to worry about organising one for the trip to Hargeisa if you take their transport.

I stayed at the Oriental... more »

E-mail address Man-soor Diving Club in Berbera?

Hi,

I'm looking for the e-mail address of the Mansoor Diving Club in Berbera, Somaliland.

I've already e-mailed the Mansoor Hotel in both Berbera and Hergeysa, but no reply. Also the quality of the phone connection was too bad to ask them anything.

Also, any information about the prices of dive-courses, and any experiences with this Diving Club would be very welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Internet Connectivity in Somaliland

I will be in Somaliland for three weeks in January. Most of the trip will be spent in the cities of Hargeisa, Boroma, and Berbera.

I will need to have internet connection in order to send information back to the states on a regular basis. Can anyone suggest what technology options there are for me? If I bring an Ipad, will it work? Or how else can I pick up wireless internet in the country, if at all?

Any info on the internet and phone infrastructure throughout the country would be really helpful.

DIGFER Hospital, Mogadishu

Hello, looking for images of Digfer Hospital. I worked there in 1992 and have written a manuscript about my experiences in which I would like to include an interior and exterior image. Your image would be credited, of course. Thanks.

Somaliland trip report

Flew from Addis to Jijiga via Dire Dawa, about 1200 birr with Ethiopian.

Shared taxi from airport to Jijiga bus stn in market, 50 birr
Jijiga to Wajaale small bus, 30 birr, less than two hours.
Wajaale to Hargeisa share taxi, 120 birr or 40,000 Somaliland shillings. 3 hours, 90 KM. The first 20KM is not really a road, just tracks in the desert, after that it's paved.

Got visa in advance in Addis, $40 & 1 photo, took 15 minutes
Border crossing is v. easy. There are many moneychangers at border & in Hargeisa.
$1=6500 or 6600 shillings. Try to get 5000 or 1000 shilling notes, carrying around 500s is very bulky.

You no longer need an armed guard or a travel permit to go Wajaale>Hargeisa>Berbera>Sheekh>Burao.
However, many drivers & police & hotel owners are not aware that the regulations have changed, you may still be asked where is your permit altho you don't need one & ... more »

Jubba / Daallo / African Express - Berbera to Dubai/Sharjah

Are they still as unreliable a previously reported (comments from 2010) and likely to be cancelled. Particularly on the route to Dubai (or also Sharjah, as I see African Express also flies there).

Also, are the prices cheaper if purchased within Somalialand. The nearly $400 per ticket seems excessive on a route that three airlines fly. Than there is also the steep exit tax on top of that.

Thanks,
Sam

Somaliland visa in Addis

The location of the Somaliland embassy in Addis has changed. It is no longer where shown on the Lonely Planet map. Instead go down Zimbabwe Street which is off Bole Road for about 500 metres & you will see signs for the Somaliland Liaison Office which will lead you there.

You can still get a visa there for $40 with 1 photo within 15 minutes.

A girl along in Somaliland

Hi guys, I need some advise. I'm going to Ethiopia and would like to visit Somaliland as well. The first question is whether it's ok for a girl to go to Somaliland along?

The next one is about transportation - Do they really have flights from Addis to Jijiga? The agency says yes, but as I can see these are flights to Dire Dawa and sometimes they don't land in Jijiga. How can I be sure the plane will land in Jijiga? How can I reach Somaliland border from Jijiga airport? How much time will it take to wait to find the transportation from the border to Hargeisa?
