Is it possible to get a visa on arrival at Djibouti City airport?
I am a British citizen and flying into Djibouti city in October from London (via Addis). I am only planning to stay three days, and have a flight booked back to Addis at the end of that time.
Please could anyone let me know if it is possible to get a single entry tourist visa on arrival at the airport?
The FCO website says yes, the French Consulate in London says no...
Thank you very much

Snorkelling with whale sharks
I'm hoping to snorkel with whale sharks in Djibouti this November. I've read that this is a good time of the year to see them, and it's something I've always wanted to do. However, as someone who was on a boat that sank with loss of life, I'm a bit nervous about being on the water.
I'd be interested to hear people's experience of doing this. Was the boat stable and safe, is the water reasonably calm and not too rough, are you close to land or out on open water?

Snorkelling for Whale sharks......is February a good time?
I will be travelling to Djibouti in the middle or end of February. I have read on here that the season is October-January. If I go in February, obviously there will be less whale sharks. However, is there a chance I'll totally be disappointed and not see any in February? Thanks.

Lacs in the Summer?
So...does anyone know if the tours to the lacs run through the summer (I'll be there in August)? Emails to a few of the tour companies have gone unanswered...
(Any tour company recommendations would also be appreciated!)
Thanks!

Djibouti Nightlife
Hi All,
I'll be in Djibouti for a few days but it will likely be Saturday-Monday. I'm assuming the weekend in Djibouti is Friday and Saturday and I'm wondering if there is much nightlife going on other days? Any recommended places to check out?
Thanks

Djibouti on the cheap - trip report.
Just got back from six days in Djibouti and it can certainly be done on a budget so I'll share everything I learned.
We flew from Hargeisa to JIB for $117 one way. Without warning the flight left forty-five minutes early! There's 30$ extra tax for foreigners and 3$ airport fee. Not sure how this differs from the $30 tax on the ticket!!
THE VISA RULES HAVE NOW CHANGED!!! My friend had an onward flight to Dubai whereas I was returning overland to Somaliland. According to new, unpublished from what I can see, rules you are not allowed a visa on arrival if you have no onward flight ticket. I had my passport taken from me and was escorted to a room and told to buy a ticket. There was nothing in that room except a bench so I wasn't entirely sure how I was to buy this ticket. I was allowed to see my friend for a minute before he left the airport and we were able to come up with somet...

Accommodation in Moucha Island
I'm heading to Djibouti for work and I'm planning to attach a few days to rest at Moucha island.
The only operator I was able to get in touch with is DJIBOUTI DIVERS, which offered me a price od 97 USD FB to share a double room with a/c and private bathroom located in a cabana on the beach, 132 USD if I require the single use. This price includes the shuttleboat from/to Kempinski Hotel.
Is there any cheaper option (apart from camping) in Moucha or in Maskali island?

Possible to buy dollars in Djibouti? Anyone used UK visa?
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip from Ethiopia to Djibouti to Somaliland back to Ethiopia. My biggest headache is getting dollars for Somaliland, (not officially possible in Ethiopia), then carrying them around. I have found posts that indicate the ATMs in Djibouti work for non-US visa cards, and one post that even says you can withdraw dollars from an ATM.
I would like to travel on ATMs if possible, and I'd really like to get my dollars for Somaliland while in Djibouti. I don't mind withdrawing Djibouti Francs then changing on the street if that is possible - better than doing it in Ethiopia then carrying it around. I just want to be sure it isn't as complicated as getting dollars in Ethiopia.
Also, could someone please post a hotel price here. Any one will do - just to guesstimate how accurate my guidebook (LP Ethiopia 2009) prices are more or less.
Any tips on transport very...

Road from Djibouti City to Lac Assal -- crowded? Traffic?
Hi! I'm renting a 4x4 car from Europcar in 2 weeks and though I have driven manual transmission in the past, I'll admit I haven't driven manual in 1.5 years (my car is automatic.)
Some questions for you:
1) Are Djibouti's road from the main city to Lac Assal have a lot of traffic or will I be the only car driving there for most of the time?
2) Are the roads paved and are there signs going to Lac Assal?
3) Is there a Lac Assal park fee of any sort to enter the area? If so, how much is it and can I obtain the park fee at the location (or back in Djibouti City?)
4) Is Djibouti hilly? This matters a lot especially when I drive manual transmission.
5) Are there accomodations by Lac Assal?
6) Anyone know whether Sheraton Djibouti has a parking area?
Many thanks in advance!

Ethiopian coffee in Djibouti
Does anyone know whether it's possible to find packaged Ethiopian ground coffee (e.g. Alem Bunna, Abyssinia, etc) in Djibouti? How does the price compare to buying this in Ethiopia?
Strange question, I know, but I'm trying to avoid lugging 10Kg or so of coffee from Addis to Djibouti if possible!
Thanks.

Whale Sharks in February
Hi,
would anyone know if it is possible to see Whale Sharks in the Bay of Ghoubbet in February? And if so, is it difficult to arrange an excursion while in Djibouti? I've been trying to contact dive and tour companies, but am not getting any response.
Thanks

LP Destination page
Dear Moderators (if there are any),
I have notice that the Destinations page for Djibouti on the LP site is antiquated. On almost every other destinations page there is a section called "Our favourite ... Blogs" giving links to travellers blogs entries on given destinations. However, the Djibouti page seems to be missing this. And before you go assuming there are no blog entries to add, my blog, Joe's Trippin, has a couple entries. I have contributed to a fair number of other destinations pages, hence the reason i know the Djibouti page has not been updated. Please rectify this situation.
