I am currently in Ghana doing a graduate school internship but will have about 3 weeks to travel in August when I am done. My preliminary plan is to do a quick trip around Ghana (I'm slowly checking out the local sights on the weekends here), do a brief - 3 to 4 days- jaunt into Togo, and then spend about two weeks in Namibia and Zimbabwe.
My interests are primarily nature-related; I like to hike, bike, and camp, though unfortunately I do not have camping/backpacking gear or biking equipment with me. I also enjoy interesting architecture (e.g., Gaudi in Barcelona), so I'm not entirely opposed to city stuff. As a graduate student, I don't really have that much money to spend, and would ideally like to spend less than $2500 (including airfare) for this trip.
For Namibia, I would like to check out Fish River Canyon and Sossulvei. I will have about a week, so I'm ... more »

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for travelling to Burkina in two-three weeks. I am travelling to Ghana next week from Canada. From there I plan on travelling to Burkina and Cote d'Ivore. Just wondering if anyone has any general tips for travelling to Burkina?
I am just wondering if anyone has any tips for travelling to Accra. I am going to be flying there next week and am just wondering if anyone has any tips for a Canadian travelling to Accra (first trip to Africa). My boyfriend is from Africa so I'm sure that will make things a little easier, just looking for some tips for travelling to the area.
Does anyone know any good hotels, restaurants, sights to see, recommendations for the area?
So...I read on wikitravel that some ATMs in Addis will give you the option of pulling out USD. I've seen this in plenty of other countries, so I'd believe it -- but I haven't seen any mention of it on these forums or elsewhere. So...has anyone pulled USD out of ATMs in Addis (or elsewhere in Ethiopia)? If I can rely on this option, it'll save me from carrying around a few hundred extra bucks for a month before I get there...!
I am travelling to Ghana next weekend and I am hoping to get a Visa for Ivory Coast in Africa. I am from Canada and to get a visa from here you have to travel to Ottawa. Does anyone know anything about getting a visa to Ivory Coast while in Ghana. I have my Visa for Ghana and will be there next week and I'm hoping to get my visa for ivory coast while I'm there.
Any other information people have regarding the visa or general tips for ivory coast or ghana would be greatly appreciated!
Myself and 2 friends are going to be backpacking/camping in Madagascar from the 4th of July - 6th of August. Our general plan after we land in Tana is to head to Antsirabe for the Famadihana then to Tsingy de Bemahara with a river tour of the Manalombo river and Baobab avenue. From there we would head back through Tana and north to Nosy Be, stopping off at the Ankarafantsika Nature Reserve. Then we'd go to Antisiranana, stopping off at the Ankarana Nature reserve and the Amber Mountain National Park, and then down to Marojejy Nature Reserve, staying for a few days in Camp Simpona and climbing the peak. Then we will canoe down the Lokoho river to Farahalana, and travel south hiking through the Masoloa National Park to Maroantsetra. We would stay there for a day or two to watch humpback whales, spend a night on Nosy Mangabe and potentially go to the marine reserves on the edge of the M... more »
I'm trying to find out how things are outside the cities in Swaziland. In particular, I'd like to know if, in villages, the average Swazi has access to water and electricity.
I've been working on a project to give solar lighting to rural communities and was wondering if there is a need in Swaziland or if villagers are generally wealthier than the African average (as in South Africa). Much of the infrastructure in Swaziland seems on a par with that of South Africa so I am unsure if the provision of grid electricity is universal there or if, for reasons of lack of infrastructure or lack of funds for connection, the majority of Swazi people outside the main population centres are still surviving with Kerosene lamps and candles.
Does anyone know?
We have booked to go to Senegal for our honeymoon at the beginning of October this year. we are spending the first week in a beach resort near Mbour and then have a week to travel around (flying in and out of Dakar).
We were thinking of taking in the following in week 2"
- St Louis
- and would like to head in land - any ideas?
we also have the following questions:
- What are good day trips can we do around Mbour?
- We think it will be wrestling season- any tips/advice?
- We would also like to see a football game, again, does anyone know if any are on/where to go?
- We know music is big in Senegal - where is the best and safest place to see live music?
Any ideas appreciated for honeymooners on a budget!

Soon it's off to Madagacar.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a hotel in Tana where you can meet other independent travelers.
The best place in Tana to buy airline tickets for domestic flights?
Is there a flight between Soalala and Tana?
We are relocating to Mozambique with two small dogs traveling in-cabin with us, and we have a layover in Nairobi. Anyone knows if they allow dogs to go out the airport for a walk and come back in without any special requirements?
Or can anyone point me towards the correct source of info regarding pet travel in NBO? I have not been very successful finding stuff online.
