train to Vic Falls & border crossing

I will be volunteering at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage in July with my 15 year old grand daughter. We have decided to take the train to Vic Falls and cross over to Zambia to visit friends. I understand the train should be fairly safe, but have been reading reports that crossing the border from Zim to Zam can be a hassel, especially for people with luggage. Long waits and sometimes search and the confiscation of items on the Zim side. I have also read that there is a long walk between the 2 border posts and am again concerned about hauling the luggage.
Has anyone made this crossing that can tell me more about it and their experiences. I'm wondering if a flight might be a better option for us as this is the first time the grand daughter in Africa, 4th for me, but I've only been to SA and Zam before, with group jaunts to Botswana & Mozambique. Haven't a clue what to expect here.

Single solo traveller in Victoria Falls

We decided with a friend to go to Namibia and Botswana with a group of people, camping. At the end of August/September 2013. She can't make it.

My question is:
_- how safe is for a mature solo female traveller to walk in Vic Falls park, to visit the falls ect.

We were intending to fly 2 days before the trip starts to have a bit much time for doing interesting thing in Vic.Falls

Driving time Harare- Vic Falls

Hello,
just to understand also from a practical point of view if renting a car can be useful and not only a cost...
What is the travelling time from Harare to Victoria Falls compared to the bus?
And from Vic falls to Hwange or Dete?

thanks

Beitbridge to Bulawayo transport options

Hi all

Simple question: Does anyone have any up to date information regarding buses from Beitbridge to Bulawayo?

Two UK passport holders trying to head north from Messina in South Africa in June; SA buses won't take you without visas, and we're both a little too remote at work to be able to organise visas ahead of time, so thinking we'll walk through and pick up a bus the other side (non-Zim buses passing through are not allowed to take fares from the Zim side anymore, apparently).

Would be great if anyone has any input on the Beitbridge border of ballache options, of if anyone's driving through around June 13th and can squeeze two more contributing passengers in...

Thanks for reading

Mark

Vic Falls to Hwange NP

Hello,
I just discovered, reading some other thread, the railways is running in the Hawnge NP…therefore I suppose there should be a stop in a town near the park entrance, shouldn’t it?
Would it be feasible to leave from Vic Falls, and stopping in e.g. Hwange and finding from there a lift (local bus, taxi, pick up from the park, else? ) to the NP Main Camp, where we could join group organized safari (probably spending a night in
Hwange). Maybe it would be easier doing the same by bus. Then we could again take again the train/bus to Bulawayo or Harare. This would avoid us renting a car in Vic Falls and dropping it off in another location that seems to be lot expensive.
What do you think about it?

thanks

Plug and Voltage Adapters

Hey Guys!

I'm headed to Zimbabwe for research and will be needing access to my computer on a regular basis. What has been your experience with plug adapters and voltage adapters - do I need both? Also, I'll be in South Africa for a couple of weeks, will I need a different adapter?

Any suggestions would be welcome - Thanks!

Best guidebook for Zimbabwe

Hi,

what is the best guide book for Zimbabwe, considering that none of those in the market (Bradt, Footprint, ...?) are updated since 2010?

Are those guidebooks still helpful?

Thank you

Which wild/national parks are best to visit?

Hi all,

We were planning to the national parks in Zimbabwe because of the high costs, but changed our minds.
We (4 persons) can only visit one though, and we don't have our own transportation.

Which park would you recommend? (and why)
Any indication about the costs would be very welcome as well... (doesn't have to be a very long visit)

Would be nice if there are lions, giraffes and elephants to be seen...

Thanks!

Avoiding Zambia

I have a problem that I can't seem to resolve and would greatly appreciate any advice I could get.
This August I plan to visit my daughter in Namibia. She is volunteering with WorldTeach and has from August 15 to Sept 2 free. My wife and I were hoping to Visit Capetown from August 1 to about the 8th or 9th, before going to Victoria Falls and Chobe Nat. Park. Because I have Lupus, it is not advisable for me to go through Zambia because I would need a yellow fever vaccine (which is not advisable for me) in order to later re-enter South Africa on my way home. Is there an overland way to see Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from Namibia without going through Zambia? Also, when going from Victoria Falls to Chobe do the tours go directly into Botswana without entering Zambia? In other words, is there a way to see Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Chobe Nat' Park in Botswana overland without entering Z... more »

Entry visas on arrival

Can I obtain a Zimbabwe entry visa on arrival which allows me to cross to/fro the Zim/Zam and Zim/Botswana borders each day? I'm told that if I buy a "single" entry visa on arrival this will give me as many entry/exits as I like within a 30 day period. Is this still correct or do I need to buy a visa each time I enter/exit?

I will be staying in Vic Falls for a few days and wish to visit Livingstone/Chobe etc.

Many thanks.
