Travel Kampala to Zanzibar

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Zanzibar early next week (23/24 June) and looking for any travel partners to potentially hire a car with. Will be returning to Kampala after a week.

If anyone has any good info on car hire places or it might be a long shot, but bike hire, it would be great.

Cheers

Any ideas for Uganda

I am planning on doing a backpacking trip down the East coast of Africa at the end of this year (starting in November) I have heard that Uganda is a great place to start a trip like this as there are numerous other backpackers that you can link up with and can travel with.
I was wondering if for a trip like this where are some places that I should start i.e hostels, places to stay away from, cheap places to go, volunteering jobs (the cooler the better i.e wildlife, helping out at schools)
This will be my first time backpacking also, so I am wondering if anyone would have any general knowledge that they could pass on for a trip like this.
Thanks
p.s I would like to eventually make my way through to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, and South Africa so my trip would ideally take me a year, if anyone has anything about any of these places, if there are certain times to ... more »

Travel help!

Hi guys,

I'm travelling to Uganda in July, and am wondering if anyone knows how much the buses from Entebbe to Mbale are, and how often they leave from the main bus station in Entebbe?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Thank you

advice

Hi guys,

In July and August, I'll be travelling to Uganda and I'd like to have a bit of advice.

Since I don't want to rely too much on my credit cards, and I read on many sites that it's recommended to bring cash dollars, could you please give me a rough estimation on how much I will need for 2 months?

I know everyone will spend a different amount of money, but I'll be mostly using public transport (probably will have to hire a car/driver once in a while to get to/through a NP), sleep in budget hotels, eat in local restaurants, ...

I will however have to pay a visa (+ one to go to Zanzibar for the last week), a safari-walk I booked (+- $200) and 50% of accomodation costs in Zanzibar (+- $ 200).

Another thing, would it be possible to find a micro sim-card in Entebbe/Kampala?

Thanks guys,

Sofie

Travel to and from Buhoma

Hi all,

Few questions on travel around Uganda:

  • Does anybody know how much a private hire from Kabale to Buhoma cost? is this easy to organise when you are in Kabale?

  • Is there a bus from Butogata to Mbarara (For Mburo national park)? Any other suggestions on how to get from Buhoma to Mburo in one day with combination of bus / private hire?

Thanks,
Henriette

Packing list for August trip to Uganda?

Hey everyone,

My boyfriend and I are heading to Uganda for 2 weeks in August and I'm trying to figure out what I should bring. What is appropriate dress for women? I've read that there is some variation but I want to ensure that everything I'm buying is culturally sensitive (but also weather appropriate). We're planning to go gorilla trekking, white water rafting, and spend some time in various towns. Any advice or insider tips on what to bring (clothing & otherwise) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dana

Transport to Ziwa rhino sanctuary

Hi

I am flying into Entebbe and arriving very early (3am) on a Monday morning. I'd like to find a guest house, get my head down for a few hours and then get a bus in the afternoon up to Ziwa.

Is it easy to find public transport going up towards Masindi and Gulu in the afternoon? Until what time maybe?

Which area of Kampala do the busses leave from?

Many thanks

Andy

Uganda Gorilla Tracking Prices - Any News?

Hi there everyone...

Are there any news on prices for Gorilla Tracking for after June 2013? I have to make up my mind for an exact date soon if prices will go up like they did in Rwanda, but can relax a bit if prices are staying the same. Also, any news on the likelihood of them offering a special off-season rate again? I'm planning on tracking the Gorillas in Nkuringo in November.

Cheers

Questions about Uganda for October/November

Hi,
my partner and I are planning to travel through Uganda from mid October to mid November, and we are all set to go- however, we spoke to a friend of a friend who claims to know Uganda well, and raised a few concerns for us:

Roads - if hiring a vehicle. Apparently they can become really bad and hard to drive on, at some points you can't see the road, as it is the rainy season.
Hunting spiders (can go in through vents in car), locusts, tetse flies(can get vehicle sprayed) and swarms of bees are apparently all an annoyance. Are there plenty of places for fumigating vehicles or are these only at certain National Parks?
Animals can get into your tent if camping - but not sure this would be the case on a recognised campsite?
Does anyone know how much of this could affect us on our journey, and if there is anything useful we can do?
Thanks for any help,

First time traveling West of Kampala

Hi,

Where can I get a bus from Kampala to Kabale? I only know of Horizon and Bismarkan. What are some of the other companies? And do they all leave from the same area or are they scattered across Kampala?

Also, what is the latest any bus leaves Kampala? I've read the journey takes about 8hrs. Ideally, I'd like to get my gorilla permit from UWA in the morning, hop onto the bus and be in Kabale the same evening. Is that pushing it?

Thanks
