Visa to Benin in Lome?
Hi,
I’m currently working on a travel/volunteer project that will take me on a journey that will begin in the west coast country of Guinea-Bissau and take me through Central Africa to the east coast, ending in Tanzania.
A journey in which I will spend a few months volunteering in Sierra Leone as well as travel through central Africa, meeting people and try to find out their goals and dreams in life.
Do we all share the same dreams?
All the experiences, stories and people that I encounter on this journey during 200 days through Central Africa will end up in the final product - A book called "200 Days of Dreams"
Since this trip is taking me through a lot of countries I am currently doing a Visa review to get as much accurate and updated data as possible.
Should I get a visa to Benin in Lome or possible to get at the border with Benin?
Just want to check if anyone has ...

Visa on arrival for Togo
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to visit Togo, but I haven't managed to get reliable information on visa regime. I'm a European (Czech) living in East Africa, and there's no togolese consulate/embassy anywhere close (nor in my country of origin) - and those consulates I tried contacting don't respond.
I'll travel by air to Lome and I want to stay for 8/9 days (from a Saturday to the following Sunday). I've read that you can get visa on arrival at the airport for 7 days, but if you stay longer you have to extend in Lome (not sure if that's correct?). However, I'd like to travel around the country and not spend half of my stay hanging around the Lome immigation office.
Do you know if it's possible to get visa on arrival at the Lome airport for the 8/9 days (if I have a return ticket showing I'm going back on that date)?
Thanks a lot for any help!!!
Zuzana

Travel guide to Togo & Ghana
I'll soon move to Lome & stay there for a year. I wanted to buy the LP guide of Togo & Ghana (I will definetely travel around) but there are none. I got the West African one which includes few pages on Togo & Ghana. It's good for a quick overview but it's definetely not enough if you want to see both countries.
Any guide book you recommend?

Lome / Togo political situation be aware
If you're planning on travelling to Togo, be aware of the political situation here. There can be demonstrations, usually on Fridays or Saturdays. In January 2013 there were small scale riots in the city centre. In 2012 there were weeks of unrest with small scale riots and many businesses in the city centre closing down, albeit temporarily. Demonstrators have been dispersed with tear gas and there have been allegations of police indiscriminately attacking demonstrators with batons.
Opposition leaders and other individuals have been placed under house arrest.
The central markets in Kara and Lome have been mysteriously burned down.
Elections were meant to be taking place and haven't.
Criminals and robbers can take advantage of political unrest and foreigners can often face the brunt of peoples resentment.
I've been here since 2011 teaching English and now feel it's time to move on.

Togo visa at a non-major border crossing
I read that you can get a Togo one-week extendable visa (10,000 CFA) at the border if you enter from Ghana (Aflao/Lome), Benin (Hilakondji), and Burkina Faso (Sinkasse).
My question is: is it possible to get a visa at the border if we enter from another border crossing? Specifically, we want to enter from Benin (from Djogou to Kara) or Ghana in Central Togo (Tamale to Kara). Are these reliable border crossings there and can we get a visa at the border there? Thank you very much for the information.
(This question is reposted to the Togo thread from the Africa thread, where it was posted by mistake. Sorry I could not find a way to simply change the thread)

Any Australians in Lome this Australia Day?
Anyone interested in celebrating Australia Day together?
I could go a burger and a beer for lunch. Or pizza. Or China Town. Something "international".
Cheers,
Jess

Cycling in Togo and Benin--Accommodation
I'm heading off in a few days to West Africa for the first time to ride my bicycle around both Togo and Benin. As always with a bike trip, there's a question of whether I should carry camping gear and camp in the countryside, or whether there are places to stay sufficiently densely packed (every 80-100 km) along the route that I could leave the camping gear at home and just stay in local hotels. I'm guessing that Togo is fairly densely populated, and so it might be hard to find isolated spots to pitch a tent, so I'm leaning towards sleeping indoors. Does anyone out there have any experience of bike touring in Togo? Does anybody know rural Togo and Benin well enough to say whether there are reasonable places to stay? (The only thing I'd like in a local hotel, other than a minimal cleanliness, is a reasonable level of quietness).
Thanks for your help!

Choosing between Togo-Ghana or Ethiopia for backpacking trip
Hi there!
I'm considering to travel for a month to Africa during this winter, and the choise is between
1-Togo-Ghana, or
2-Ethiopia
(I've been in the past to other places west, south, east of Africa).
I understand that each country is definately interesting, has distinct identity, and comparisons are difficult.
I'll try to make it in backpacking way, so, no luxuries... and hope that backpackers are welcomed there...
Costs, security and weather are key factors
Maybe you could give from your experiences some advise about choosing one of these two destinations?
Hoping it is possible to have an enjoyable trip despite travelling in low cost...
Thanks for helping me to make some choises!!!
Happy travels!

Elections could disrupt travelling?
Hi there!
I'm thinking to travel to Togo this winter, starting from Ghana, but read that it's elections time shortly, for both countries, and I worry if this can be a difficult period with unrest etc before or after elections date.
Do you think it is better to wait and see, or hopefully it's not a big enough thing to disrupt travel of foreigners?
Many thanks !!

Paved Roads in Togo
Hi! I'm looking at doing a few weeks of cycling in Togo and Benin in December and January, and I realize that looking at the road maps I have, I have no idea which roads are paved and which are dirt roads. Could any kind souls out there let me know what roads in Togo are in fact asphalt?
Thanks for your help!
