Visa Query

I'm hoping that there's someone out there who's aufait with visa issues. I started a RTW trip in South Africa and accidentally overstayed my visa a couple of days; naturally I was issued a fine to pay in my home country (Britain). I have yet to return home and as such haven't sorted the issue however I wish to return to South Africa prior to going home and was wondering if anyone knew if could do one of the following:

1. Pay the fine at the consulate in Mumbai (I'm currently travelling India and will be flying into Cape Town from there);
2. Pay the fine on arrival at Cape Town airport.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Nice restaurants / bars in Cape Town

Hello,
Could you recommend restaurants and bars in Cape Town?
Here are some indicative criteria:

  • Good food (all kind), reasonable prices, good atmosphere, rather youthful atmosphere.
Thank you in advance.

Cape town experts...

Hope someone might know this.....if you are outside Cape town Backpackers (New Church Street, just before it becomes Kloof Nek Road)....there is a small side street across the road.

On that street there is a hotel...quite modern, maybe a 4 star. Its on the right,a short distance up that side street.

Does anyone know the name of that hotel?

Thanks Luc

Anyone need a ride? Cape Town to Johannesburg

I know this is kind of shot in the dark, but it's worth a try.

I arrive in Cape Town June 4 and will make my way to Johannesburg by June 30. I plan to surf along the way and stay in J-Bay for at least a week. I have a friend who lives in Durban so that's on the menu as well. If anyone has a similar trip in mind but was wondering how they could reduce the costs of self-driving please hit me up and maybe we can work something out, if even for part of the trip. I'm a 35 yr old environmental science high school teacher from Hawaii, I'm well travelled and love road trips so if you want to join please drop me a note. If anyone reads this and has suggestions what to do along the way I'm all ears!

October at SANParks: should we book accommodation in advance?

Hi,
We are planning to visit South Africa next october and we'd like to avoid having a to much rigid schedule (we will be travelling on a rental car). It would be ok to go there without sanparks reservations and book on arrival to each park? We want to stay on some of the more basic accommodation, nothing fancy. In fact, we are thinking on carry an camping tent with us: there are places for camping on some parks? do you have to book your tent space?

If we really should book ahead, how much in advance should we book?

Thanks *in advance*!

Kruger Recommendations - 5 days

We (3 adults) will be in Johannesburg in mid December and plan to visit Kruger Park. We have given ourselves 5 days however have some flexibility in adding 1 or 2 additional days if needed.

We are still undecided on hiring a car and doing it on our own, or joining a packaged tour.

  • Is there any significant advantage in car hire? (Apart from the obvious flexibility.)
  • Is it best to hire a car in Johannesburg? (I know shuttle buses run from J'Burg to Kruger, but car hire seems to be from the local airport.)

We are also undecided if staying in one of the private reserves is worth the money or not.
  • Is there a significant advantage in staying a private reserve (in terms of seeing animals)?
  • Does Kruger offer enough without the need to go into the private parks?

Currently we are swaying with the packaged trip just because the various options and short amount of time make... more »

Carnet for photo gear in South Africa?

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience traveling to South Africa with camera equipment. Would you recommend a carnet for the equipment, or are the customs officers not so strict about it? Is it likely to be confiscated if I don't have a carnet?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Travel from Johannesburg Airport to Lyndenburg?

Hi.

How do I get from OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg to Lyndenburg, Mpumalanga the least expensive way? I can't seem to find busses or anything else going that way. Does anyone know my options? A rental car is not a consideration since I'll be there for a month and not need one. I will also need to return to the airport from Lyndenburg.

Thank you so much.

HELP! Anyone on AF 521 from CT to Paris tonight?

Does anyone know of anyone on AF 521 from Cape Town - Paris leaving this evening at 18:40 and landing tomorrow morning at 05:55?

I'm travelling from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania tonight and have some urgent travel documents that I need to try to get across on that plane. I will have the document delivered to the person and personally meet them when they land.

I know it's a long shot, but stranger things have happened on the Thorntree :-)

Cheers,
Kevin

Imbizo tours johanasberg

Dear users,

I have recently visited joberg and was very much looking forward to doing a bike tour around Soweto. There are a few companies that will do this now:

http://www.sowetobicycletours.com/

Which are very good. However we booked ours through IMBIZO tours - who are recommended by Lonely planet and rough guide. We contacted Mandy at the company who was going to charge us R490 for 4 hour bike ride, R450 as there a 4 of us. They were to pick us uo from the apartheid museum and drop us back there or home which ever we would prefer.

There were however a few problems - firstly we were picked up at 1.30 pm and so did not start our bike tour with everyone else. We were in a car with 3 others who were having a car tour and we proceeded to drive for 1 1/2 before we got to where our bikes were meant to be and then had to wait for the bikes. The reason we drive was because ... more »
