9.5 hour layover in Cairo

I'll be arriving in Cairo in a couple weeks but only staying for about 9.5 hours. My plane gets in at 11:05am and I catch another flight at 9:45pm. I know nothing of Cairo. Would it be possible to safely store luggage at the airport and/or visit the pyramids in that time? Logistics of such a trip? That's my main interest, but if not the pyramids what else would be advisable for someone interested in getting a quick feel of the city?

Luxor to Western Desert Circuit

Hi
Have looked at previous posts on getting around in Egypt and note comments about Lonely Planet Guide book being rather cautious about travel options. However just wondered if someone can give me some practical info.

In November I am planning on spending 3 nights in Luxor then want to do the Western Desert Circuit, taking about a week for this, using public transport to get from place to place, ending in Cairo. I want to cover Dakhla/Farafra/Bahariya. Originally I was planning on starting at Al-Kharga but, according to Lonely Planet, it looks either impossible to do it by public transport or very expensive by taxi. So I thought it might be easiest to get a train (possibly taxi having looked at earlier posts) to Asyut, spending a night in Asyut before travelling on via the Western Desert route using buses.

I am a woman (mid 50s) and will be travelling on my own. I have seen th... more »

Egypt in End of May -June

My boyfriend and I are heading to Egypt May 25th! we'll have a week in Egypt. I was thinking of doing Cairo and Luxor. My question is due to the extreme heat is it worth not going to Luxor and heading to the Red Sea instead to do some snorkeling? Anyone have any thoughts? We're on a budget and would love some input.

Al Kharga oasis - Hamadalla hotel CLOSED

Just been in Al Kharga oasis and the recent-LP-listed Hamadalla Hotel is now closed down - like wrecked.

This leaves only one budget option in town: Dar al-Bida Hotel @ Midan Sho’ala; LE 65 - single w/ AC; 50 LE w/o. It's OK. Clean. But alittle noisy from vehicles/horns. However good location as it's very near to souq, microbus station and some good cheap eats.

Hiring Car and Driver to Visit St. Anthony and St Catherine Monasteries

My friends and I have six days to visit St Anthony's Monastery south of Suez and St Catherine's Monastery (Mt Sinai).
Any advice on the feasibility of hiring a car and driver for the trip?

Egypt for 15 days in mid September (Alexandria, Cairo, Sharm El Sheikh)

Hi. I was planning to do a backpacking trip to Oman, but then I found out that Oman isnt very kind towards the backpackers. So I have found a really good flight deal to Egypt.

I am planning a 15 days trip starting from September 10th to September 25th. I plan to travel these 3 cities:

Alexandria - 5 days
Cairo (by train from Alexandria) - 5 days
Sharm el Sheikh (By bus from Cairo) - 4 days

I plan to return to Alexandria by plane and then return to Bangladesh on the 25th. I want to know if I can cover most of these cities by this time ? Are there any other places you might suggest I can visit ? How is the weather in September ? How much do I budget for each day ?

Hope the questions arent too overwheming :D ! Thank you for reading

I would like to know if there are a lot diffeernce between traveeling 1st and 2nd class
in trains in Egypt. Is the 2nd Class clean enough and safe? Or would you prefer
being in 1st class paying a bit more?

Giza or Zamalek, 4 days in Cairo

Hello
We have 4 nights in Cairo. We were thinking about 2 nights in Giza and 2 nights in Zamalek. What do you think? Or are they just too close to bother moving hotels? Just wanted to see both the Nile and the Pyramids from our room! Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers K

Is there a peaceful way to see the pyramids?

On my way back to Cairo. Leaving Luxor in a few days, and I have to say all this haranguing by the touts has worn my nerves thin. Having someone follow me around as I go through the sites, the constant “hey, look at this!” followed by the open hand, “hey, come this way!” etc. I’m not complaining about the money, I’d gladly give them the few EP in advance just to leave me alone for the rest of my visit. But it doesn’t work that way as they’ll pull out a cell phone and tell their pals to get over here and get on the gravy train.
Of course I want to see the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx. Unfortunately, from what I’ve read the experience is probably even less pleasant than what I experienced with my horde of new-found friends at Luxor. I don’t want a guide (a bodyguard maybe :^), I just want to see the sites, possibly with excursions to Dahshur and Saqqara. Best way I can figure at... more »
