RIP RudiK

I was alerted to this post: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2325093

I've just spoken to his wife. He left us peacefully, but won't be forgotten easily. I had the honour to meet him & stayed with him & his wife for a few nights on my way back home from Botswana two years ago.

Anyone who didn't meet him missed out on meeting an incredible man!

Hoping to be in SA in a few months & have promised to catch up with his wife!

RIP Rudi, you'll be missed but never forgotten!

Very sadly

Security along N1 to Bujumbura

Tucked the original post away on a reply, so this is essentially a repeat.
Could someone provide reliable info as to security situation on the bus route to Bujumbura on the N1 as have heard confliciting reports of late? Some saying it's perfectly ok, others commenting it may be a liability. Thanks.
Anyone have information on bus times Bujumbura - Kigali.
Grateful to Fulana and others on posts about accommodation and encouragement as to rewards of visiting. Any suggestions for hotel in the city or better out on the lake? Cheers

I need some Information about the ferry beetwen Aswan and Wadi Halfa

Dear Everyone,

I would like to ask a few question about the ferry, thanks in advance for your help.

1. Is it possible to buy the ferry tickets in Cairo at the Ramses station?

2. Can we buy the ticket for our car as well there?

3. Is it true that you need to buy the tickets one week before the start of the ferry?

4. Does it still operate at every monday?

Thanks again.

ziguinchor aeroport - zig airport

Hi

Is there somebody who knows the surroundings of Zig airport a bit ?
I am looking for Baboucar who rents out the cars, about 300 metres from the airport but before Lycee Djignabo on the road leading to town. I lost his email and phone number.

Merci

Driving Moshi-Dar-Mtwara on Sunday. Anyone want to join?

I live in Moshi and have a little trip planned down the Swahili coast. I'm planning to drive to Dar on Sunday, stay the night there and then make my way down to Mikindani (just before Mtwara) to chill out there and do some diving. I have time so will take my time in places like Kilwa Masoko on the way down. After that I will likely drive back to Dar and then to Tanga, where I have to be by the 5th of July. Another alternative would be tro drive north to Songea, Mbeya, then back to Dar on the TanZam highway. But that would be far too much planning!

So, if this fits in with anyone's plans and would like to join me in a nice, comfortable Land Cruiser, karibu!

My TZ phone is +255785978148 and you can email me on thorntree.20.raf@spamgourmet.com

Air Austral

Hi all,

Just a word of warning, Air Austral seem to be changing the dates of peoples flights without telling them. We were due to fly on the 29 August from CDG and had booked a Eurostar ticket to fit the flight plans accordingly.

It was only becase we checked to see what the prices would have been if we booked now that we realised the flight dates in general seemed to have changed. After calling the airline, we discovered that they had indeed changed the flight to the 28 August and were only telling July passengers at present (last week).

We have now been sent new tickets and managed to change our non transferable ticket with Eurostar (cheaper), but had we not have been curious on prices and been able to change our train so early on, it could have been quite an expensive ordeal that would not have been out fault.

So, check your tickets guys!

Thanks

Mandatory to have a local guide to visit the South Omo markets?!?!?

Hello,
I visited the South Omo area three years ago independently, and I did not have problems visiting the markets (Turmi, Key Afar, Jinka) without hiring a local guide. However, it was necessary to have one to visit the surroundings settlements or Hamer/Mursi villages. Now, I am going again to the area, and the recent LP guidebook (may 2013) cleary states that "it is mandatory to have a local guide to visit the local markets in Turmi, Key Afar, Dimeka, and that you have to hire them through the local guide associations...)"..... So, I wonder if the situation has now changed, and it is illegal to stroll around the markets without a guide ?!?!?

I found the local guidesto be too pushy in some places (specially in Turmi and Konso). I also wonder if that it is "their law" or if it is really an Ethiopian law that does not allow to walk in the markets (which I will found that pre... more »

Visa in Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa

Hi!

I am going to Southern Africa for 6 months in total. I am flying to/from Cape Town. After 2 1/2 month in South Africa I am planning to go to Namibia for 3-4 weeks (volunteering) before I continue to Victoria falls/Zimbabwe, where I am meeting up with some friends. If I am taking Intercape I can only go to Victoria falls in Zambia, but it is still a lot cheaper than flying. And then I could see Vic falls from both sides before my friend arrive. Can I get visa on arrival to Zambia? How much does it cost?
After I meet up with my friends in Zimbabwe, we are thinking about going to Botswana and then into Namibia again? Can I then use the same visa or what do I do? After that we enter South Africa, and here I was told that I get 3 months tourist visa again. Is that true?

Hope that someone can help me and maybe suggest another way to travel between the countries. more »

Is it possible to make this journey, and if so, does anyone know the best route? Is it safe? And what are the visa requirements for South Sudan? Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Travel Kampala to Zanzibar

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Zanzibar early next week (23/24 June) and looking for any travel partners to potentially hire a car with. Will be returning to Kampala after a week.

If anyone has any good info on car hire places or it might be a long shot, but bike hire, it would be great.

Cheers
