We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Africa here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Africa FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Casablanca

Hi there,

I have just spent a week in Casablanca. My friend got sick on our travels, and we decided to hole up here until she got better. We were staying in the Youth Hostel there beside the old medina and I just wanted to mention a couple of words about it just in case anyone wants to go there. It is the cheapest respectable place around Casablanca as I looked in most corners of the city for something cheap yet nice, and the hostel is the best bet. However, just a bit of a negative feedback on the place. There is no hot water in the place, despite what the lonely plant guide says, and the dorm beds are now 60d to stay in. If you want hot water, do not ask the small man with glasses, Brahime, as he tried to rip off a Japanese girl who was staying there. He tried to charge her 60d for a hot shower. Stupidly, she paid it. The process of heating water involved the turning on ... more »

Great safari with African Memorable Safaris

We booked our safari with African Memorable Safaris and had a fantastic experience with this organization! We arranged our safari already in the Netherlands before we left for Kenya. Jennifer is always ready and fast to answer questions.
At the first day our guide Geoffrey was right on time to pick us up at our resort. He was a really great guide!! He knew everything about the animals and was able to show us a lot of different ones. He was really funny and always in a good mood! He made sure we were always first or second at the special spots. The most special moment was at the end of the safari…we saw five cheetah’s hunting and eating a reedbuck, we didn’t even need our binoculars!! Please make sure to book your safari with this organization, they are very reliable, well organized and keep every promise they make!! We recommend AMS to all of you and if we’ll ever visit Kenya again,... more »

Visa at Cairo airport -- I have read earlier posts

I am a U.S. citizen in Japan right now. I am about to buy a plane ticket to Egypt leaving on 11/29. Everything I have read, including on this forum, says that there is no problem getting a visa at the Cairo airport when I arrive. The travel agent here though is very reluctant to sell the plane ticket to me though because he insists he has heard of many people having problems and being forced to return because they were not issued a visa. I must purchase the ticket today (in the next 3-4 hours) or the next flight with seats available (at this fairly reasonable price) is on 12/8. Can people here with recent experience confirm that there is no problem getting a visa at the Cairo airport when I arrive at 4:20 PM on 11/30? Thank you!

By the way, I called the Egyptian embassy here in Japan, but they are closed today. :-(

Condition of road from Nata to Kasane

A couple years ago we drove from Joburg to Kasane and on to Zambia etc. The road at that time had huge potholes north of Nata. Can someone let me know the road condition as we plan another long road trip on that road in March.

Independent travel by public means of transport- Mozambique

Dear Travellers,
I'm back from a long trip through Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Swaziland by public means of transport, and since I owe you a lot of tips, now I can pay them back with a report, tips, pics, maps.... for those who wants to travel independentely without being isolated in their own vehicle.

In Mozambique I took the famous train Cuamba- Nampula, then Ilha De Mozambique and then Beira, Inhambane up to Maputo.

LONDON TO CAPETOWN OVERLAND - LEAVING JANUARY 2010

LONDON TO CAPETOWN OVERLAND - LEAVING JANUARY 2010

Hi All,

I am planning to drive from London to Cape Town in early January 2010. I originally planned to do this in September (hence the other posts) but had to hang around for slightly longer. January is now set in stone as i'm leaving work for this trip. If you fancy some adventure then read on!

I have a 300 series Landrover Defender called Himba which has been built from scratch to a decent expedition spec and am looking for 2-3 people to join me on this trip.

The trip should take around 6 months and take in:

Libya
Tunisia
Egypt
Sudan
Ethiopia
Kenya
Rwanda
Uganda
Tanzania
Malawi
Zambia
Botswana
Namibia and
South Africa

I’m a 28 year old male from London who’s had enough of city life and wants to fulfil a life long ambition! I’ve been lucky to have travelled quite extensively through Europe, the US, Cana... more »

Family friendly Africa? Where to go with a 1year old?

My husband and I need to visit Johannesburg to see family at the end of Jan and want to combine this with a 2nd destination.
Although we are quite adventurous, we need somewhere suitable and safe for our daughter who will be 16months old.
We will forutunately be able to afford to stay in a 4/5* hotel resort and we'd like to be coastal close to a beach, but would like to spend time out of hotel, ideally seeing some wildlife & local history. There will just be the 3 of us so we won't be doing any adventuous sports!
Our starting point is London so West Africa looks sensible route-wise but Madagascar is top of our list of destinations we want to travel to.
Can any experienced travellers on here recommend some suitable destinations that I can look into further. We have both travelled extensively in southern Europe/North Africa (Morocco/Tunisia/Egypt) so not looking into that region.

January 7th-9th

Hi,
I have a few days at the end of my SA trip. I was thinking about going to Swaziland for it. I was just wondering if the mini buses from Jo'burg to Swaziland were safe of if it would be smarter to rent a car. I am a 22 yr old male.

Dakar to Bamako by bus?

hey all -- i'm going to be travelling through west africa in feb and march. we had thought about taking the bus or the train but i've heard from a few sources who've spent time in the area that it's a pretty horrendous ride and should be avoided at all costs (though they've never actually done it themselves). they suggest we fly.

i tried to get a sense of what a flight from dakar to bamako would cost -- i've found one quote for US$280 with Ethiopian Airlines but the rest are well over a thousand.

has anyone taken the bus/train route? would you recommend it?

has anyone flown? do you know the best (cheapest) carrier? and is it best to book ahead or wait until you arrive in the country and go through a travel agent there (dakar)?

thanks so much!
lady c
