Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Africa branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Africa here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Africa FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Hi again,
We need unexpensive accomodation in Marrakech. Do you know hotel Essaouira? Is it OK? One commetary in Trip Advisor said he found bed bugs and had 40 bites. That worried me, but all the other critics were good and the rough guide recommends it. Any other recommendations for unexpensive accomodation?
thanks!

If you were to do one (or possibly 2) large animal safaris in your lifetime, where and when should it be? I am thinking of spending about a week on some animal reserve Would this be sufficient. Please be specific about places and times.

Hi,
my name is Tiago Carrasco and I'm a portuguese journalist. With a photographer and a cameraman, we're going to travel across Africa from Lisbon to Joahnnesburg, crossing 19 countries to reach South Africa in the exact day of the first match of FIFA World Cup.

Hi,
I am going to Morocco March 30 - April 11 (celebrating my 40th BD). March 30 to April 4 we are staying in Marrakech and maybe doing a day trip to Essaouira or the Ourika Valley. On Sunday April 4, my sister and her husband are leaving and the rest of us (my brother, 35, his girlfriend, and my Mom, 63) would like to do an unforgettable trip in Morocco. We may leave on the 4th or Monday 5, and we need to be back in Marrakech on Saturday 10th.
My first choice after reading the guide was to go to Erg Cherbi, visiting the Rose Valley at Bou Thagrar and the Dades and Todra Gorge in the way there. But it seems that the only way to do that in 6 days is renting a 4WD, which seems to be pretty expensive. It seems that it is impossible to rely on public transportation to do this in such a short time, and in a normal car there's plenty of pistes that cannot be travelled.
Are these i...

Does anyone have any clue of the name of the all male a cappella group at the Waterfront in Cape Town? I saw they had a CD for sale while I was there, but didn't manage to snap one up and now would like to see if I could try and find on one on the web as a Christmas gift. Realize there could be several different groups working the Waterfront, but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi,
Because of the alarming post on the website of Reuters I was wandering if it is still save to do the boattrip from Mopti to Timbuktu. After this boattrip I wanted to go back to Mopti overland (with a 4 wheeldrive). Is this ok to do so? Does anybody have good alternitaves? I've got 3 weeks and itinerary is at this moment: Bamako, Segou, Djenne, Mopti, (boattrip) to Timbuktu then back to Mopti to meet some friends with whom we'll go to de dogon for some trekking. Then back to Bamako.
Because of this situation my trip has to have a plan B!
Hope to hear from you.

I have a flight arriving in Entebbe at 20:40 and can't decide whether to spend the night there or travel on to Kampala. I need to catch a bus to Fort Portal at 8am the next morning. Can anyone advise how much a special hire taxi would be to go straight to kampala from the airport? Any ideas as to whether i'd be able to get to Kampala bus station in time the next morning if I spent the night in Entebbe?
Thanks

Hi
We were able to book a trip to Uganda to arrive in Entebbe. We have only 14 days in africa. We would like to see the gorillas but are concerned that it takes a day to get there and a day to get back. Is there any flight to get us closer to the parks where the gorillas are? For example, would it make sense to fly to Kigali instead and go from there instead of driving? We think we want to see Bwindi, but since this is in Uganda would it be faster to fly to Kigali and drive back into Uganda? Or just drive from Entebbe? Other ideas?
Also if we confine ourselves to Uganda to see gorilla's is there a particular park where they are more amazing than others? We actually prefer good hiking so that's not a concern.

Hello,
I'm planning a trip to West Africa (Ghana/Mali mainly) this January and February and I had a couple packing questions for those with experience:
-I want to avoid bringing a sleeping bag or sleeping sheet for space reasons. Is a sleeping bag necessary for trip to the Dogon country? Could I borrow/rent a blanket of some kind from a guide or somewhere else while I'm there instead of hauling a bag along with me my whole trip? Also, is a spare sheet to sleep on really necessary in West Africa? I've travelled though East Africa and Ethiopia and never stayed in a hotel where I felt the bedding was so filthy or bed bug ridden that I needed my own sheet to sleep on, is West Africa any different?
-Is decent mosquito repellant available to buy in West Africa. I will be brining my own but wanted to know if it was available to buy if I ran out. Also, how are the mosquitos in ...

Greetings all
I will be in the western cape for christmas and was looking for a nice place to chill for a few days its needs to be near the beach and I was thinking of something like a chalet where we can cook and relax for a few days, not to expensive but as I have been camping for the last 10 weeks in Africa I don't mind loosening the budget a bit. Just a nice place to spend Christmas for myself and my wife
I have a car so if it is a little out the way thats no problem
Any Suggestions???

First I got a visa at the Embassy of Yemen at Old airport road in Addis Ababa. Cost is 850 Birr, one photo and a letter from your embassy.
Once in Hargeysa, I took a 8 seated-taxi to Berbera for 5$. The soldiers at the five checkpoints we passed never seem to notice me sitting at the back. If they had, I would most likely been ordered to travel with a soldier.
In Berbera I got all the info on boat traffic to Yemen at Al Salam shipping agency in the white and blue building across the Immigration office. For 50$, they booked me on a boat to Aden, the last one for ten days. Supposedly taking 24 hours.
After getting some sort of unofficial ticket at the harbor I could get my exit stamp at the Immigration Office for 20$. A guy from the Immigration office went with me through customs at the harbor.
The problem occurred when I was about to board the boat. The owner of the 35...

Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience of this place? It gets rave reviews in the new LP guide, but when I call they quote rates of 400 birr instead of 150 birr in the guide. They say LP was mistaken but cant find any other info on the internet that backs up either side.
All other hostels I have tried for the period (2nd week of Dec) are fully booked.
Thanks!

Hi Guys,
We are 2 guys flying into Livingston dec17 2009 for 10 days. It looks like to thing to do is a self drive safari to Chobe. I have a few questions, and if someone is planning a similar trip during this time we would also be interested in hooking up because some of the trips might be safer in a convoy of two 4x4 cars.
1. Renting a 4x4 camper toyota hilux from Livingston seems much cheaper than in Kasane ( www.hemingwayszambia.com ). Maun again is cheaper than Kasane but it takes too long to get there. Does anyone know this or another 4x4 hire agency in Livingston?
2. There are a lot of messages here about the difficulties associated with renting a campsite in Ihaha, Chobe , or other DWNP , does anyone know how this is done currently? Only through tour operators? If so which ones, are there any Livingston?
3. Are there any alternatives if the DWNP camps cant be book...
