Last question.

I'll probably have a hundred quid or so in Malawi currency left over at the end of my trip. How hard will it be to a) change back to forex and b) get that forex out of the country?

Cheers.

Train Travel Etc

Hi,

I'm on the verge of booking my flights from UK to Egypt for the first two weeks in February. My plan is to fly to Sharm and spend the first few days doing some scuba in Dahab, then from there get a bus to Cairo for three or four days. From there an overnight train to Luxor and spend a few days there before heading to Aswan after which I'll travel by bus to Hurghada for my flight back to the UK.

I read however something on this site which gave me the impression that I might have difficulty turning up in Cairo and attempting to book the overnight train at a few days notice. Firstly, is it hit and miss getting these train tickets and if I falied to buy some what alternatives would I have. I suppose ideally I'd like to know I have tickets arranged before I even set off.

Also with regard to buses from Dahab to Cairo and from Luxor to Hurghada is it possible to turn and buy yo... more »

I would like to recommend an amazing experience

I was in Gambia about this time last year and I had a fantastic time.

one of the highlights of my holiday was that I was fortunate enough to meet Hssan, he is a professional bird-watching guide and although I am not a keen bird watcher I decided go along on one of his day trips, and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had, Hassan called up the different birds out of the forest by mimicking there songs and they actually flew towards us and displayed for us as we paddled threw the mangroves in a dug out kano, It sounds unbelievable but it is true.

I have read a couple of posts hear with people saying that they had had some truly useless bird guides in gambia, so I thought as I happen to know the worlds most amazing bird man that I should let others Know about him.

You can find some more information about him on his web site bellow, or if you go to the sen... more »

Mombasa questions

We have 3 extra days in kenya in january before flying out and were considering a trip to mombasa. We hear that the coast is beautiful, and Mombasa is a great city in its own right, and a suitable substitute for experiencing coastal africa if you can't get to Lamu or Zanzibar. We did have a few questions that hopefully will be answered.

1) where should we stay? We're traveling on a budget and don't need a 5 star hotel anyways, but we would like to stay in a clean, comfortable, and safe place. If anyone has any recommendations/contact info we would love to hear them.

2) things to do? I do want to check out the markets and tour around old town a bit, but other than that we don't have any plans. Are there any good day trips out of the city? Or is the ocean accessable for sunbathing/swimming, or should we go south for that? Has anyone done a dhow tour?

We plan on taking the over... more »

My trip from Pointe-Noir to Tchibanga (Gabon)

Here is some info about my trip from Pointe-Noir (PN from now on) to Tchibanga in Gabon, sorry for my bad spelling…All this is made with local transportation.

I got to PN by the Brazzaville train. All the people went off at the first of the 2 trains stations in PN. I was the only one passenger left on the train because no one wanted to leave at the main, and last, station. Some really creepy-looking youngsters went on the train to collect bottles and they really looked at me like a prey, started to chat some meters away and for the first time in many days i got a really bad feeling. Like they were planning a robbery later on.

I leaved my wagon to sit among some soldiers and one of them could speak a bit of English. He gave me food and helped me to find a cheap (For being PN) hostel called “Guest Loango”, about 10minutes from the station by private taxi (1000cfa), shared taxis is... more »

driving from Lilongwe to south Luangwa np

We've been to Tanzania and South Africa and there we rented a car to drive aound the national parks. I don't exactly enjoy being with a guide when I travel and I was wondering if we could rent a car in Lilongwe, go to South Luangwa for a couple of days - I've read that it was definitely worth it - and then drive back to Malawi. I've looked up on the internet and the safaris are fairly expensive so would renting a car be a cheaper option, considering that we'd rather travel alone ? Is it really hectic to go by bus or van ?
Thanks in advance
Véro

Sorely lacking French language skills!

My question might seem a bit ridiculous, but here goes: How much English is spoken and understood in the parts of Mali that get the most travelers/tourists (Bamako, Timbuktu, Mopti, Gao, the most visited Dogon areas, etc.)?

I'm a non-French-speaking American with many independent overseas trips to Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa under my belt over the past few decades or so. Back in my school days I studied Spanish, German, and Russian, but never French. That said, wherever I go, I always at least take a stab at learning as much of the prevailing language in that country/region as I can cram into my head during that time that I'm there, and for the most part that's worked out pretty well for me. The only countries where I've really tried to use French, however, have been Morocco and Tunisia, and that was about 10 years ago. I certainly didn't win any style points, but I man... more »

first day camping

Hello dear fellowtravelers,

We are going to Namibia in december and arriving at 11.50 AM at the airport. We have to pick up our rental in the city (4x4 including campinggear) and get us our first supplies in the supermarket. So I think there is not much time left to find a nice campground before dark.

I was thinking of going to Daan Viljoen Game Park for our first night. Any tips or other suggestions? The second day we will be going south to Keetmanshoop.

Thank you,

Kiekie
