Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Africa branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Africa here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Africa FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Official: 2 Italians kidnapped in Mauritania
Two Italians were kidnapped in the West African desert nation of Mauritania, a police chief and a security official said Saturday.
The Mauritanian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the subject, said the hostages were taken by gunmen Friday night from their 4-wheel drive vehicle.
The security official said that one hostage was an Italian man and the other was his wife, originally from Burkina Faso. He said their vehicle was found empty and with bullet marks near the village of Kobeni in southern Mauritania.

Hey Guys, I am kind of in a pinch and arrive tomorrow (Sunday) night in Pointe Noire and have emailed 6 different hotels and have only got one reply that they are full. The thought of not having a place to stay in Congo at 11pm doesn't thrill me so any advice would be appreciated.
Also, are there taxis at the airport to meet all the flights as I am coming from Libreville?
Any hotels not mentioned in the next thread would also be appreciated as you know they are not online and travel agents cannot access them.
Thanks.

I just grabbed this from the Festival Au Desert Website - http://www.festival-au-desert.org/doc/pr_reloc.pdf
"Following recent events in the north of Mali several western governments have issued Security Warnings and strongly advised their citizens against traveling to Northern Mali including to the Festival au Desert at Essakane. For several years similar Warnings have been issued concerning the region surrounding the Festival au Desert even though for the past nine years this Festival has been held successfully without an incident to attendees.......
......As befits its nomadic traditions, the Festival will make its camp this year in the desert sands only minutes from the center of the City of Timbuktu. Transportation between the multiple events will be enhanced as will site security. This new location also will permit dignitaries, celebrities and festival goers greater access...

Hi there all. I wanted to make a recommendation to those in Addis who are looking for an interesting evening out on a week-day or whenever, which is to visit the Grasmach Tasse Cultural Centre and Vegetarian Restaurant in Kasanches. The building is a fantastic old wooden mansion built in the time of the Emperor Menelik, by Mohamed Ali an Indian contractor (there were no Ethiopian contractor in those days) and restored Mr Daniel, the great grandson of the original owner, Mr Grazmach Tasse who was a surveyor for the Emperor. The building was used by the Italians and was later a police station in the time of Haili Selassi... Anyway, it has now been restored by Mr Daniel and he has set up an organic restaurant downstairs which serves delicious food, and he has set up a museum upstairs which displays photos, news-papers articles and artefacts which document the history of the building (and... more »
I lived a nightmare just over 48hrs ago in Burkina Faso - I have said many times on this forum 'Don't Travel at Night' - I took a calculated risk as the bus to Bouake; CI leaves Ouaga at 23h - Burkinabe transport is excellent, the roads are good but I was a complete hypocrite and paid for it with something I will have a problem erasing from my mind.
Mods - if you are reading this - maybe put it as a 'sticky' - a lesson to us all - life is precious!
*The bus left Ouaga at 11pm, as usual it was perfectly on time with 4 gendarmes on board armed with kalashnikovs in case of bandits on the road; we were the lead bus of 4 TCV vehicles. Burkinabe transport still amazes me - it is so well organised compared to the rest of W.Africa, large, clean, air conditioned, comfortable new TCV bus headed out on the road to Bobo Dialausso to arrive at 4am where I would have a wait of 3hrs before ca...

Hello,
We will be arriving in Cairo on Monday and need a driver for Tuesday. What our plan is to leave on Tuesday morning for St Katherines, spend a few hours there doing the hike
and then continue on to Eilat that day. Can anyone refer us to a good driver? If my itinerary sounds to be out of the question, maybe just a driver that can take us to the border.
We will be hitting Petra on the way back, and continuing on to Luxor and Aswan.

This hotel is listed as a favorite pick in LP 2007, is it still a nice options? They have a good cafe too? They are offering a double room for 500D w/breakfast and airport pickup for 200D more. We arrive at 6pm so dont wan to make a ordeal out of it, pushing off in morning to Fez.
I was going to book the Ibis by the train station, but the reviews on Trip Advisor are not too good, and the prices is nuts.

Hi folks... This may seem like an odd question... But I am trying to decide between spending three weeks in Morocco or the Middle East this coming fall. (Jor/Leb/Syr) I know they are totally different. I have been spending time in the LPTT pages for the Middle East and people rave about these three places. But my friend went to Marrakesh a few years ago and said I'd really like Morocco. So if anyone has been to both places...drop me a few lines. I think they are similar budget-wise... Thanks! (Experienced single male traveler, here....)

Hey everybody,
I'd like to spend a couple of weeks to attend an Arabic course in Tunis earlier next year. The problem is that my (German) passport will expire just one month after my return back home. Will this be a problem at the airport? Heard different things about this issue: some say that entry will be denied, others say that the six months rule isn't really looked after...
Thanks and nice holidays,
The Bubble

So, I'm not very fond of going in big groups so will skip the Nile Cruise ships, and also can't stand being cold at night so won't do the Feluccia trip either.
My question is, where is the place for doing a day trip on the Nile?
