Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Africa branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Africa here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Africa FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

My friend and I will be in Cape Town in early July for the World Cup, and then the plan is to head over to the Garden Route from there.
A couple stops that my friend and I are eager to make are at Hermanus (for whale watching) and Gansbaai (for great white shark cage diving). Does it make sense to do these trips as day trips from Cape Town, or should we do them as stops on the way between Cape Town and the Garden Route? Doing them as stops seems like it should save time and money, but are these spots nice places to stay, or would we be better off coming back to Cape Town for the nights? Are they easy to get to without renting a car?
That's the other big question is transportation from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth through the Garden Route. I know Baz Bus does this route but I don't think they're running any extra buses and I think it's gonna be difficult trying to get a bo...

My son and I are needing to travel from Dublin, Ireland to Rabat, Morocco. He is 20 and I am 63. We will be 10 days in Dublin touring, departing Dublin on 19 May to go to Rabat, Morocco so my son can attend a summer session in College. We will have (2) bags each weighing about 20 kg (44 lbs) each.
Please suggest an economical and practical way for us to get from Dublin to Rabat..

Don't hesitate longer to visit Algeria ! Great counrty with very warm welcoming people .
Did it all alone for months (french female), in every corners (even went to Tindouf !! sort of end - f the world..) and never got any problems - p. ex, from Tam to Djanet took a "Toyota taxi" with other locals (you just need to report at Tam Police station before). Concerning the route via hassi Messaoud, it's def close for foreigners, due to "business & security" restrictions. But around Illisi, coming from Tam or Djanet I travelled by local transport.
Basic recommandation : learn some french and avoid the typicall backpacker total look / go for a simple wear "all in black" with running shoes, than latest sport & adventure kaki expensive cloths..
here you can check some pics of my journey ::

thanks so much for all your help in planning our egypt/tanzania trip. we narrowed our safari operator options to about 5 companies that we felt very comfortable with, and then bargained it out. MELAU TOURS won the game! has anyone ever had any experience with them? they have been in operation 15 years, fully TALA licensed and a TATO member. everything seems to be in order, and heaven knows i've peppered them with enough questions, to which they've very promptly and thoroughly responded.
their website is www.melautours.com
thanks again for all your help, and please do let me know if you've heard of or had any experience with these guys. now just have to settle on an egypt operator, and we're all set!

Dear All
I am heading to West Africa in March and am hoping to visit Niger.
Can anyone comment on the security situation in Agadez. Also what is the general atmosphere like, does it feel safe and are there any hassles with the police/army to contend with.
I would be travelling via the Niamey and Zinder roads using public transport. Are these routes safe?
Thanks

Dear All
I have seen several messages advising that Niger have opened a visa section in Ougadougou which is contrary to the advice in all the guidebooks. Can anyone confirm if this is the case and provide addresses and approximate timescales for the process.
Thanks

Hello! I'm hoping to visit Tsavo NP briefly on a trip to Kenya in September. Having spent a considerable amount of time in East Africa I'm well used to travelling by public transport in the region - although not specifically in Kenya. I'm wondering whether it is possible to reach Tsavo NP by public transport - I'm specifically hoping to reach Patterson's Safari Camp. Looking at the tiny maps in the LP East Africa guide book it appears to be possible but I'd really like to hear from someone who has visited recently to know whether or not I'm just dreaming! If its not possible by public transport, anyone know of any bargain basement tours? Thanks.

Our university is organising a field trip to Uganda on April 20th, but another student and myself are going a week earlier so that we can (hopefully) get in on some gorilla trekking! Unfortunately, the number of interested students dropped from about 5 to 2 and, consequently, the costs per person have risen.
Is there anyone that will be in Uganda from April 13-20 that would be interested in joining us for this? I have done quite a bit of research and have gotten some decent estimates from different tour operators. E-mail me at dustin.miller@mail.mcgill.ca if you are itnerested and I will fill you in on the details! Or if someone knows another appropriate place to post this, please let me know!
Thanks!

Hi all,
I have been living in Liberia for the last six months. My contract is up next month and Im planning to go overland from Monrovia to Bamako before I fly back to the UK. I have been as far as N'zerekore in Guinea but have'nt gone further. Just wondering if anyone has done the Monrovia to Bamako route and if they have any tips/advice. Im thinking of taking the westerly border crossing with Guinea at Voinjama as that goes straight onto the paved road to Kankan (so I've been told). Any info would be helpful thanks.

Hi all,
I'm interested to know the logistics and feasibility of crossing DR Congo from Rwanda or Burundi up to Central African Republic.
I'm aware of instability in some areas, terrible road conditions etc, but I would like to know if anyone has taken this route as a backpacker ie without their own vehichle.
Although transport may be diabolical, I assume like most other parts of Africa, hitching on trucks and boats is always an option.
Some specifics about danger areas and details of a route up to Bangui would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Has anyone got a cheap (sub- 500,000KSh) 4x4 for sale in Nairobi? We're looking for one to get us to Capetown, visiting various parks etc on the way. Must be Kenyan or South African registered, preferably with all paperwork sorted!
