Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Africa branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Africa here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Africa FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Inside this thread you'll find a collection of information and links to websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about the countries covered. Have a good look around before asking your question - quite often your question (or one very similar to it) will have been asked and answered many times already.
When you're ready to ask a question, choose the most relevant country from the drop down menu to ensure the best responses.
Please feel free to add any other useful advice you might have inside this thread!

Over the years since first joining Thorn Tree I've gotten to feel I know quite a few of the regulars - even though I've never met any of you. But somehow it seems you are part of my social circle, so just would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and an interesting New Year. For those of you who live in Tanzania, those of you who are travelling, and those of you back in your home countries, but keeping in touch with Tanzania through this forum, thank you for providing information, discussion, and generally enhancing my knowledge of the local environment. I look forward to seeing your posts in the coming year and who knows? Maybe we'll meet someday!
Happy Christmas to Nilsy, Tich, Stefo, Achnab, just to mention a couple - sorry I've missed a naming a lot of others!

Hi. I want to travel to Ngorongo and / or Serengeti from Jan. 23/24 to Jan. 27th. Would anyone like to take me on (and thus lower overall costs) or is anyone interested in forming a group to go to any of these places on these dates? Thanks. David.

Hi, All
I was just wondering, when you buy an oasis tour (Dakhla or Kharga) does it include sightseeing ? Does the tour just consist of hotel and transportation to and from the oasis or does it also include a guide that will take you to the local ruins/sites ?
Merry Christmas !

hi,
unfortunately, info for a laundry is missing on LP Morocco book.
here is the one that i fave found by asking people there:
Rue D'istambul No:2
this street is not there on the book, but Ave Abdelkrim al-Khattabi is there. close to the coast on the NW of the city. take al-Khattabi, when you reach No 142 on the right, turn next right. 'Rue D'istambul' is signed (surprisingly) on the first building on the right corner. the laundry is few blocks further on the left, No 2. the building is named Residance Al Amane. laundry does not have sign, open your eyes to see it.
00212537726485 is the phone number, open everyday from 8:30 till 22:00
they have machines to wash and dry. but they took care of my stuff. i just put my laundry (around 5kg, could be even 8kg i think) in the washing machine and came back after 2h. washing and drying was done. they even folded my stuff.

I've read the previous posts and I'd like clarification re the possibility of getting USD cash off my visa or debit card at the bank (not from an ATM machine). Is this possible? Do they first give it to you in TSH and then convert it to USD? Is the rate terrible? Does it take a long time? I guess the other option is to carry a $2000 USD which makes me nervous.

I need to book a couple nights in Arusha (one night before and after our safari). I've tried the L'Oasis. Looking for recommendations for budget, mid-range place. Is the Colonel Middleton Road area okay?
Thanks.

Fed up with African buses?
....why not buy a car to travel in style?
We are traveling around Africa in a Toyota 4Runner (aka Hilux Surf). It has a strong 3.0L V6 petrol engine. We have gone all around Africa, starting in Morocco and are currently in Ethiopia.
As we are running out of time, we would like to sell the car (which is in good shape) in the near future - preferably to someone who might take it on another interesting trip on African roads.
The car is registered in Europe and travelling on a "carnet de passage", a document allowing you to take the car in an out of countries without paying import duties. To buy the car and take it on another journey, you would have to contact your local Automobile Association on how to buy and transfer cars to a carnet they issue.
The equipment is basic but functional. Like a wooden bed built into the back of the car, a gas stove, ...

Hey folks,
I just wanted to warn you about a guy called BIRUK DESALEGN, a freelance tourguide and money changer (we haven't hired him as a guide, but after the forex-experience, I wouldn't recommend him at all!).
If you are traveling by car, he will approach you by asking if you have been staying at "Jungle Junction" in Nairobi. If you arrive on public transport you'll have to recognize him by his slick appearance.
DON'T exchange money with him, as you are bound to be ripped off! (His fingers are faster then your eyes and borders are confusing....There's other folks around who are fairly honest, but Biruk is not!
cheers,
robin
