It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum, advice for how to post your questions, and obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008! If you are a returning user or an Africa guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Marrakech Souk Closed November 28?

Hi, I heard the souk in Marrakech is closed due to the feast holiday on Nov 28. Is this true? If so, is it opened on Nov 29? Any details would be great. Thanks so much!

Where would you go in Dec 2010?

Hi Posters

I'm posting this in at least 2 other different branches so apologies if you've read it before.
I'm planning by next big vacation in 2010 and for certain reasons, I can only go in Dec, mid-Dec to be exact.

I'm still undecided as to the destination.
My criteria:

  • NO winter destinations (still reeling from the cold in 2008 when I was in Paris during the Xmas period)
  • experience suitable for 3 pre-teen girls
  • mix of culture, history and great landscapes (and bit of wildlife thrown in)
  • my family loves the sea and would invariably spend the tail end of our vacation at a seaside place (but this is not a MUST)

My shortlist include:
  • Africa (was thinking Tanzania, (Zanzibar hmmm).... ut it'll be a pretty long trip with lots of air connections)
  • Morocco (not sure of the weather there in Dec)
  • Australia (safe bet, most likely the Gold Coast)
  • New Zealand...

Cairo Opera House

Does anyone know if events at the Cairo Opera House usually sell out? I won't be arriving until a few days before some concerts are scheduled and there seems to be no way to reserve tickets from overseas.

World Cup Accommodation Tips

I know I'm going to get a few insults for the vagueness of this question, but that's never stopped me before!

I'm heading down to South Africa for the World Cup and I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips for finding accommodation. I've done some traveling in Europe/Asia/Oz/NZ but I relied pretty heavily on hostelworld.com and have never tried planning a trip during a massively popular event like the World Cup.

Hostelworld.com seems to not be yielding decent results. Does anyone have any websites or resources to recommend for finding reasonably priced (I know this is a bit of an oxymoron during World Cup time) accommodation during the World Cup?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

How to visit Murchison Falls NP

Hi everyone,

yet another Murchison Falls NP question! :)

I've used the search function and found heaps of info on the park, as well as the budget safari tour offered by Red Chili. I had a look at their webpage and think this tour is a pretty good deal - BUT.

We have 'plenty' of time in Uganda, or, let's put it this way: Money is more of a constraint than time. We also have our own camping equipment and ideally we'd like to spend more time in/around the park.

I saw that Red Chili operate a lodge/campsite thingee at MF. My idea is now to just get there by myself, stay a few nights and do activities from there as opposed to having just one full day (if you do their tour from Kampala). Does that make sense?

Can you get toe there hide away by public transport?
Can you organise game drives, boat trips, game walks and so on from there?
Are there any other operators that are... more »

Going to Tanzania 2010, need insight!

Hello fellow travelers!

This is my first post on Thorn tree, this place is great :) I have a few questions about Tanzania, maybe someone can help...

My fiance' and I are traveling to Tanzania in 2010. We had planned to go in October, but I saw a very helpful post suggesting against it due to Presidential elections being scheduled. My next option would be to go in December, should it be safe by then?

I have read that Dec. brings the short rains. Is this a major annoyance? Being on holiday, we wanted to escape the rain, as where we are from it is quite dismal that time of year.

What do you all think?

Zanzibari summer

Hello everybody,

I am going to do a volunteer work in Stone Town next year, July-August.
I have thought that you could help me with some questions I have.
I want to go there and get involved with people, I want to find a guest house or something like this and live the swahili culture with them, renting them a room. Do you know any family that hosts volunteers for a resonable price?
Another question is food. Is it cheap, and "eatable"? not bad for our stomach, I mean.
I I also would like to know if there are special-nice backpacker bars or places in Town (I don't like luxury bars or bars just for foreigners). I am not a kind of person who doesn't want to get involved with the locals, of course not, but I also want to meet other volunteers and tranqui people. At the end, I am interested on places with foreigners and zanzibaris together, but in a calm and nice atmosphere.
And wha... more »

8 day holiday in Morocco

Hi
my daugther and i have just come back from an 8 day holiday in Morocco where we had an fantastic time we booked a tour guide and car before we left the UK and he was there at the airport to meet us, he spoke perfect english so we had no problems with telling him what we wanted and he could explain to us all about the different places that we went to.
We felt safe at all times,( as i have read on other posts that females traverling on there own have not ).
We found Morocco to be a wonderful country with so much to see and so many places to go, i was worried that taking my 18 year old daugther with me she would get bored as most girls of that age love places with lots of noise but she loved every moment of it and would love to go back so she could see other places there as 8 days is not long enough,as Morocco is such a big country.

If anyone would like to contact me about ou... more »

Camping in Kenya

Hi there -

We're two women (26) travelling to Kenya. I've been reading about a lot of parks that have campsites. They sound like great, economical places to stay, but I'm wondering about the safety factor.

Anyone out there camped in Kenya? Would you recommend it? If so, are there any specific spots you suggest or gear you wouldn't go without?

Thanks!

Yet another question about safety (on the roads)

Hi all,
I'm heading for SA next week and haven't organized anything apart from a rental car and a hotel for the first night. I'm just reading previous threads about safety. They don't really worry me as I think it's mainly common sense. But I just stumbled over some advices about road safety like "don't stop at isolated places to admire the view".
But that's exactly the good thing about driving around in your own car, isn't it? I wondered if it's really that dangerous to stop anywhere when there is no one else.
So is it ok to stop somewhere in the lonely countryside and go for a little walk? Or is that a really silly idea?
Where is it generally safe to park your car? (Outside big cities, I'm not a fan of cities, I love the solitude of the countryside)

I also read some advices about not hiking alone for safety issues. Is that because of natural dangers like heat, sun, heavy rain... more »

Hotel for the 31st of Dec and 1st of Jan

Can Anyone please recomend somewhere nice for myself and a friend to stay in Marrakech on New years eve and the 1st. Looking for somewhere nice for no more than 20 euros each per night next to the medina. We had planned to stay at Jnane Mogador hotel which looked really nice but it has fallen through.
Thank you.
