There has been some questions about this in the past and I would like to make the current policy clear to members:
Thorn Tree is a forum for individual travellers to meet other travellers, not a place for businesses to engage in conversation with disgruntled users or gain exposure, therefore business accounts are not allowed in TT and any users identified as such will have their accounts terminated. This includes users:
- identifying themselves as a business in their message, signature, avatar, profile, and any external links redirecting to their business or site
- doing stealth business via PMs
- the usual newbies suddenly recommending a particular website, service or company in all their posts
We would appreciate if you could report users you suspect fall under this category by clicking in the "Report Member" link in their profiles and we will look into it... more »
There's been a bit of discussion lately about our 'overactive' moderation filters. This is just a note to say that if you believe legitimate travel content is being held in pre-moderation, please always email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will try and sort it out, or explain why the post in question has not been instantly approved.
We hope you understand that any moderation is only ever in the spirit of a) ensuring that we uphold our community guidelines, and b) detecting spam automatically. Our system is not designed to target individual users or restrict relevant content from appearing on the Tree.
It's been a few months since we announced impending changes to Thorn Tree, so it's time we gave you an update.
There's been a team of developers and designers working away on a new version for a little while now. Here's the headlines:
We hope to launch a beta version in February 2014. This is not an iron-clad guarantee, but it's where we're aiming for at the moment. We'll keep you updated if this changes.
The new Thorn Tree beta will include the return of private messages. As we've said over this past year, the mods have missed them too – party time.
What will the new Thorn Tree look like?
It will contain the same features and a similar page layout, tweaked to look a bit more 2014, not 2006. It... more »

Moderators are the people that help keep the threads tidy and on-topic. They are people - just like you, and should be treated with respect -just like you. They are not software developers, so the more detail you give in explaining the problem you're having, the more likely it is that they'll be able to troubleshoot it.
In the absence of private messaging, if you'd like to contact any of them please email email@example.com with their name in the ... more »
A message from our Chief Technology Officer, gusb, about the future of the forum.
Fixing the tech is the first step towards recovering the trust we lost and continuing to build the greatest travel community in the world. Here we go…
Why did we shut the forum down in December?
How do I enable the private messaging function ? I am at a loss please help me
When did the very first version of TT go live on the web? Is the first thread still conserved somewhere?
I am trying to ask how to book the cheapest air ticket from Australia or New Zealand to South East Asia.
Sorry folks, this post is not (mostly) about Australia, just a general question.
On another Branch I've just been notified of someone adding a comment to a thread I contributed to on 11 November 2004 !
That's 11 years ago. Yet over a thousand of my messages were deleted during the 'purge'. Is anyone else suddenly getting similar blasts from the past ?
Don't panic mods, just curious is all.
To the moderators,
Could any of you please send me a copy of my profile picture?
I don't want to change it, but i have lost the original and as it is a personal picture i am very attached to it.
When I put up a post it is stating an 8 hour time difference to when I actually did it. I'm sure it's a straightforward click somewhere on the forum, but struggling to find the section.
Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.
You may notice your post count increasing over the coming weeks.
This is because we are doing some work to restore some archived threads. We’re aiming to restore some of the rarer content that’s been posted in the last three years on the Destination Lounge.
This restored content will have been moderated and therefore there may be threads missing. As usual, if you have the threadid we'll do our best to look into why it hasn’t been restored.
Mod with very tired eyes
Why do I get this message when I try to reach my privarte messages? I used to have it before so what did I do wrong so I got this punishment???...
thanks a lot
I have recently had a post removed that was a link to a questionnaire because the website was under the impression that I was a business of some kind. I am a student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and was trying to carry out some research for a university project. Is this still against the forum rules?
As discussed here, work has begun to replace the systems underpinning Thorn Tree.
We've asked a few questions previously about how you use certain features, and today we're interested in your views of the Watch emails (see your personal settings here).
Do you use them? Do you think they're too frequent? Not frequent enough?
Currently, if you're signed up to receive email alerts, the options are to receive them:
- Once per day
- Every other day
- Once per week.
We're considering adding the option to receive a digest every 15-30 minutes. Would you use this setting?
All thoughts welcome. more »
Hey friendly moderators, this branch now has 4 stickies.
I suggest you remove the 2nd one, called 'Welcome the to Western Europe branch'.
It adds nothing of value. I'm not sure if the sentence 'obsolete information was deleted as recently as June 2008!' is supposed to be a joke but it looks bad. And lastly, almost all the links in that post are defunct. Seems like you deleted most of the archive but forgot to delete a useless post like this one.
Also, on the right hand side of the screen, below the ads, there are 'featured threads'. It currently reads:
• Western Europe FAQs
• Busabout or Eurail or other
• Touring through Provence & the Riviera
• Scenic rail routes
• Student discounts in Italy?
Would you mind trying them? Uh-oh, apart from the first one, none work. I guess they all date from before D... more »
it's a problem that the moderation team is all too familiar with.
Well... not quite. One issue here is that you have cases where a single user, over the years, creates literally hundreds upon hundreds of "alter-ego" accounts. For example, we have one in the CA branch who is infamous for creating complex, ridiculous discussions about provocative topics just to get a rise out of users, sometimes literally joining the conversation as 3 or 4 different "users," one berating other commenters for not answering their other alter-ego correctly, etc. It raises an interesting point: what IS the point of "banning" this user if they can just come back with dozens of new accounts in response? It's become a bit of a running joke, and while sometimes it is a bit funny, colorful, or zany, other times it veers into ludicrous and genuinely unsettling territory. It's happening today in the CA branch... more »

K2 Base Camp Trek
This is my 3rd attempt to report on a recent trek. My previous posts have been deleted as LP seem to think it unfair of me to recommend the company I used.
If you want me to recommend a very good professional company whose costs are very competitive, please send me a private message.
Regarding security, this was not an issue and I felt very safe. Because of recent problems , security has been stepped up and is very visible particularly near Fairy Meadows. I see no reason not to go there.
