Q. I’m new and I want to join in the discussion/ask for advice. How do I get started?
A. You need to be a registered member of lonelyplanet.com to post a message on Thorn Tree. You can browse without joining (but we prefer if you take part in the conversation - it's better for everyone).
Q. How do I register?
A. Click on the Register button in the upper right hand corner of your screen. This will take you to our sign up page. It's quick and free. Once you have signed up you will receive an email to your nominated email address. Just click on the link to confirm. Don't forget to confirm your membership via the email link - this final important step completes the sign up process (and also lets you in on your promo code which entitles you to a discount in our online shop!). Once you confirm your registration in the email we send you, you're ready to go. Please note - user na...

Q. How do I access my traveller profile?
A. When you first sign up, you’re taken directly to your traveller profile page. We encourage you to take a moment and fill it up with information about yourself, your travel history and passions, what languages you speak, what brings you to the Lonely Planet community, and so on.
This helps fellow travellers understand where you’re coming from when you offer insights or ask for advice, and it enables travellers who share your interests to connect with you. It'll also help us create more relevant content for you.
Remember, only share information about yourself that you are happy to have the world know about.
Once logged in, you can access your traveller profile at any time by clicking on your username in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
*Q. I want to learn more about a community member, how do I access their traveller...

Q. Who is the moderation team? Do you have berets and jack-boots?
A. Some of us own a beret. No jack-boots, but some lovely sandals.
The team are a bunch of hardworking Lonely Planet staff that sit across multiple time zones. You’ll know us on the Thorn Tree forum by our handsome Moderator avatars.
While we spend a lot of time safeguarding the community, we also participate on the odd occasion (we’re part of the community too!).
The moderation team also includes you – our users can report content or users that they think might breach our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines by clicking on the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark (the 'Report Abuse' button) around our website where member contributed content exists.
Q. What’s your moderation policy/philosophy?
A. We're proud to host one of the most liberal forums on the web, which we love, most of the time....

Q. How do I add a review to your website?
A. Browse or search our website for a destination or sight that you want to review using our main website search (the box in the top left hand corner).
When you find what you're after, on the upper left hand side you’ll see a button that says Member Reviews. Click this – or – just scroll down to the bottom of the page where you’ll see another place to click to write your review. If there are other member reviews already, you’ll see those there too.
Follow the easy prompts to add your 2 cents. Remember to keep it honest, constructive and practical for the traveller community.
Q. What if the place or thing I want to review isn’t listed?
A. We are working on expanding our range of listings, and to let you add your own choices if they don’t appear. In the meantime, if you’re keen to share your impressions of a travel experience ...

When I search for a certain topic, I get a lot of results that are two years old, on the first page.
For example, there were significant and problematic changes to the Indian tourist visa rules in the past two weeks, and I want to search for what people are saying about that, if anybody has personal experience, etc. But my search results are all years old and there doesn't seem to be a way to either filter search by date or to order results by date. Any ideas?

Hey, I was wondering if it is possible to change your username? I know you can change your password but I don't like my username. It's just a random string of letters and numbers. Thanks in advance.

Question for regulars and semi-regulars...how do you normally browse the branch here?...by recently posted or recently replied?...
The default mode of the old TT3 was recently posted so I just stuck with that and read back 3 or 4 days posts at a time every second day or so...
So how do you guys read here and what do you think the 'pros and cons' are?

The FAQs for various countries and regions are meant to be there to stop people from asking the same old questions over and over again but the problem is a lot of them are very out of date (several years old). Some contain links that don't work, visa information that is totally out of date, posts that shouldn't be there at all (i.e. those that don't give information) and totally out of date prices. This doesn't encourage people to use the FAQs to get the information they are looking for and just makes you fustrated after going through the initial posts (which are the most out of date).
Perhaps experts in each area/regular users could be nominated to go through them and delete all the out of date info (with a voucher or something as an incentive?)

Wasn't sure how to reply back to the Community Annoucement posted by VenessaP, so I thought I might post this.
Basically, the sign-in is not working for me at all using Firefox 3.5.5. It just sits there for ages not doing much. I note that our internet policy blocks certain sites like Facebook and this may be the issue.
However, I have been able to sign-in using IE7 using the same proxy server here at work. My preferred browser is Firefox, so would appreciate if the issue can be resolved shortly.
Cheers

It would be very useful to access directly to trip reports written by travellers on the TT forum on a specific country. Is it possible to do that?
Thanks

Shouldn't these be changed at some reasonable frequency?
Maybe weekly?
I think at least those on the branches I frequent have been unchanged for something like 3 months! Not really interesting that way - if changing them for something new every now and then is too hard, wouldn't it be better to simply get rid of them altogether?
Nor are the threads featured so interesting that they would deserve to be highlighted forever.
This also makes me wonder what use there is for that heart icon.
I used to think it is there for us to recommend threads interesting enough to become "featured", but although I used it a few times, it had no effect on the seemingly fossilized Featured Threads.

Look, the issue of "Your recent threads" is beyond a joke. It shows seven and four of them are threads I no longer particitpate in, haven't posted on for yonks (try like - over a year)! and its seriously pithing me off. I don't want to see them - I don't want to know that someone has posted on them and I don't see why something can't be done about it.
If you haven't posted on a thread for (say) three months surely there must be some way to see that they don't keep coming up on your screen like a bad smell from a sewerage pipe.
Thanks.
Edited to add - The thing is, they are not my recent threads. There are threads which I've posted on yesterday, today, two days ago, and they don't show because of all the old crapola of months ago.
