Cancelling a trip
My partner and I had planned a RTW trip with NZ and SE Asia involved, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we may have to cancel.
Does anyone know if this is something that can be done?
We booked through Travel Nation, and we don't have any travel insurance atm, but if we could get some that meant getting refunded on the flights, we would.
What do you think??

Eurasia travel
Hi,
I am planning a trip through Europe to Aisa. My priority is visiting tribes and other locals and photoigraphing them in their daily lives in these areas Also to photograph the landmarks for some early morning and sunset photography. I have put together a list of places that I think I should travel to.
What I am looking for here is some advice on logistics; i.e. busses and trains and perhaps bike riding and short flights. Here are some of the places I want to travel to:
(This is not in any order - I am not sure where I am going to start first!)
-*China*: Dunhuang, Yangshuo County, Huashan National Park, Xian, Datong, Lhasa, Lijiang,
-*Myanmar*: Bagan, Chin Villages Mindat, Inle Lake, Taunggyi, Mandalay, Naga Festival (New Year's) Khamti, Bhamo, Mrauk U
-*Japan*: Tokyo, Okinawa, Kyoto, Yudanaka, Shirakawago, Akita, Kumano Nachi Taisha. Himeji. Miyakejima
India: Ziro v...

Round the world without planes
I am planning for year-end, early 2014 to make my first RTW (Round The World) by road low cost, without ever taking airplanes; the only means of which will definetly use my legs, steps fortune by local bus, bicycles , and cargo with which will cross the oceans; sleeping in a tent, on the street, in the fields, on beaches, by my host thanks to "couchsurfing" and in case of necessity in some hostel.
The trip will start from Florence, Italy, as you can see from the map in the link below, until you get to the Strait of Gibraltar (where I will try to get without spending one euro, riding a bike and thanks to my legs), before diving into the dark continent, I will visit from north to south, then going from the east, coming later in the Middle East, then freeing the vast expanse Asia. The trip will then continue to Australia, where he would later with the aid of a cargo ship, I will come ...

South Africa & South America - best way?
Hi,
Myself and my fiance had planned to go on a round the world trip on our honeymoon over a 2 and a half month period (summer 2014) using the One World round the world ticket. We run our own business and have a cat and dog so came to the conclusion it wasn't practical to go away for that length of time.
We are now thinking of only doing Cape Town and South America over a 4-5 week period. We are flexible on the destinations in South America but have thought Buenos Aires, Santiago, Columbia and Lima would be nice.
I was wondering if it would now be best to just book all the flights separately? Or are there other tickets similar to a Round the World ticket that allow quite a bit of flexibility but don't require you to go the whole way round the world?
Thanks!!

Athens to Cairo
Hey,
I have been recently thrashing around a few ideas in my head for a trip and one that came to mind was to try and travel from Athens to Cairo through Turkey, Israel etc. I know there will be countless stumbling blocks, most notably country relations and border disputes, but I thought I would at least try and put it together. I can't really find any decent info of anyone who has done something similar on the net. Firstly I have done lots of travelling before and I would probably be looking at 3-4 weeks away. I really want to see Athens, Istanbul, Israel (Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv etc.), Petra, The Pyramids in Giza, Alexandria and maybe Luxor. That probably sounds like a lot and infeasible. I was trying to see as much of the ancient world as possible and I had thought about trying to visit Rhodes, Olympia, Troy, Ephese and Halicarnasse as well but I presume that these places are in rui...

Ethical Volunteering Suggestions?
I hope to go away and volunteer/work for an NGO in either South East Asia or Africa. I want to be away for about 6 months but that could be extended to a year, depending on budget (which I'll need help with as well!)
I currently work in communications and I volunteer with a women's charity. With this in mind, I'm ideally looking for an office position such as an admin assistant, volunteer manager, or a communications based role.
I basically have no idea where to start looking for an ethical company that would match my skill set. I don't want to go with BUNAC or a similar organisation, and I don't want to work in an orphanage or a school, which seem to be the popular choices.
I've looked at the VSO but they don't offer many programmes to under 25 so I'm a bit stuck. Any ideas where to start?!
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place/done to death/pointless. I'm new to th...

Visas information for under 18
Hi,
I am taking a gap year (starting really soon!--I had to get it approved before I could start planning... but I AM SO EXCITED!!!) and I'm planning to travel to multiple countries/continents. All of my plans are 'potentials' at the moment, but I do want to have the option of traveling to a country (or region) for more than 90 days. I won't be 18 until the end of my gap year, so is it possible for me to get a visa? Where can I find more information about visas (I'm from the US)? I have recent European decent- would it be easier to get a dual-citizenship/is that doable in a 6-month window/should I even consider that?
Thank you!
a few questions!
hello
i wasn't sure where to put these question so i put in this thread area
this is aimed at travelling in the 3rd world
how does one go off the beaten track exactly? it sounds good but i dont really understand, do you just take a bus somewhere random?
and also , what is a good way of interacting with locals?
and if one wants to see those amazing nature beauties out there, do you have to take a guide? id like to see some forests and stuff but i dont want to spend heaps of money, whats a good way of going about doing this?
whats a good indication of a safe area? my government has a pretty bizzarre site, saying not to go to iran , pakistan etc but these countries seem perfectly fine.
what is the actual danger of some of these infamous third world countries?
thanks!

RTW Itinerary Question
This seems like a simple question but I can't seem to find an answer.
If I get a RTW ticket do I always need to takeoff from the city I land in?
Ex. If i fly to Bangkok, can I then travel over ground around southeast asia and into China and then next get on a plane in Beijing and take it to Moscow. Then take trains from Moscow to turkey and get on a plane again in Turkey to go to Tanzania?
Can my tickets look like this: Melbourne to Bangkok; Beijing to Moscow; Istanbul to Tanzania?
Or does it have to be Melbourne to Bangkok; Bangkok to Beijing; Beijing to Moscow, Moscow to Istanbul, Istanbul to Tanzania?
I'd really much rather have air travel as only part of the trip but most sites seem to assume there wont be any ground travel.
Thanks!

Feedback on RTW itinerary
Hi TT'ers,
We're planning our year-long RTW starting in October 2013, and have a rough itinerary mapped out. I've been reading all the helpful comments and suggestions. Would love your thoughts on .
About us:
40-ish and 50-ish married couple
Prefer to travel slowly and stay in one place a little longer (e.g. pick a few regions in a country and stay longer, rather than trying to see everything)
Accommodation in apartments for longer stays and hostels with private rooms (we're not really interested in dorm rooms). I love to cook so would like to shop at markets and cook when possible, but otherwise will stick to budget food, with the occasional nice dinner out.
Prefer to overland rather than fly everywhere
We are looking for nice sunny weather since we live in the rainforest, so no Scotland in February!
I'd like to keep the budget (including flights, though SA flights ...

how to travel as much of south east asia mainland and maritime as possible
Hello there,
I am currently living in Melbourne on my working holiday visa and now that I saved a good bit of money for future travels I want to go on.
A plan that seems quite appealing to me is to go from here via great ocean road to adelaide, from there via ghan train (which is cheaper through rock tours I guess) to alice springs, do the ayers rock tour and go to darwin to go to the kakadu national park. Rock tours also offers a 2 day trip through this park.
My whole outback experience would therefor be in the hands of a tourguide, whcih does not trouble me too much as I heard it is quite hard to get around and get around well on your own. I would like to hear your opinions and experiences on this as well, but here I come to my main question.
I really want to go to south east asia from darwin but here I am not too sure how to and how easy it is in the end.
I would like to see...

Round The World Potential Idea
Hey guys, so I've been reading this forum for a little over a year, bought some LP guidebooks and shoestrings and went on my first solo trip to Berlin last October because of it. I'm starting to plan my trip now and looking at starting it next early March/end April.
My idea of this trip is to have nothing set in stone except my visas for Russia and that's only because its completely necessary. I want to have an idea of places and I want to go and things I want to see, but nothing 100% for sure.
I'm in the process of getting dual citizenship to the EU and that will most likely be the passport I travel with. I'm looking into flying into Europe from Canada, most likely the Mediterranean or south, so Italy most likely. I plan on spending 3-4 months in Europe and than continuing onto Russia (yes I know still part of Europe). I realize I'll have to get this Visa before I leave Canada...

Open-ended RTW trip
I'm leaving on an open-ended RTW trip in a few weeks and wanted some feedback on my itinerary (as it were) and whatnot. I'm a photographer whose focus is ruins, landscapes and architecture. Other interests are classic books, WWII history, UNESCO sites, cool natural phenomenon. Budget is US$27,000, no time limit. I've already bought most major flights (FF miles), paid for insurance, vaccinations.

- Kindle
- Unlocked iPhone 4S.
- a few pieces of clothing for padding
- good hiking/walking boots
The Itinerary:

Thoughts on a proposed trip please?
Ok – so this is still just over a year away but after spending the last 12 months researching, reading and calculating I thought it may be about time to get a bit of feedback on a plan. I know its early to post this but I guess I’m just looking to see if people think what we are planning is waaaaay out and not do-able. If this turns out to be the case then it gives us time to save more / re-think etc etc. You get my drift.
We are from the UK, married for 2 years and reasonably well travelled. We’ve covered a lot of Europe, Scandinavia and North America. I’ve been to Japan before and we also travelled across India for 3 months back in 2009. This has inspired us to go for a longer backpacking trip. The costings below are all in £GBP’s and are for 2 people. We will absolutely be on the budget end of travel – obviously sharing rooms which will help, aiming at cheaper guesthouses or dor...
