Asia - Thailand

I am planing for Phuket during the last week of November... please provide information on :
1) weather in November
2) hotels / resorts in Patong beach ( close to the beach ). I have checked Amari Coral, but it is a bit costly.
I am in SE Asia from start of January to end of March 2013. I fly into Singapore, plan to head up through west coast Malaysia for about 10 days then up through Thailand (southern beaches/islands first) then to Bangkok up to Chiang Mai and across into Laos, then Vietnam (Halong Bay down to Ho CHi Minh City) before going across into Cambodia then back to Bangkok to fly back to London.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how long to spend in each country? I don't want to plan in too much detail but I also don't want to stay too long in the first few places and then not have enough time for the end! What places should not be missed and any advice on destinations? I have not read many positive posts about Vietnam in particular, generally saying that it is full of scams and unfriendly locals. Should Vietnam be whizzed through and if so, what is unmissable?
Thanks. more »
I have begun the preliminary stages of planning our 19 day honeymoon to Thailand/Cambodia in July. We would like to see as much as possible the first 12 days and then relax on the beach, dive, etc. for the last week or so. We enjoy hiking, ruins, and anything adventurous. Here is our itinerary so far:
2 Days: Bangkok (jet lag, markets, temples, massages, tailors) -> Fly/bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap (few hours fly / 9 hours bus)
2 Days: Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) -> Fly from Siem Reap to Bangkok -> Drive from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi (6 hours)
3 Days: Kanchanaburi / Erwan / Hellfire Pass (Bridge Over Kwai, temples, caves, memorials, animals, waterfalls, railway) -> Drive from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok (6 hours) -> Fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
4 Days: Chiang Mai (elephant rides, temples, trekking, cooking classes) -> Fly from Chiang Mai to Phuket (much cheaper tha... more »
I have read quite a bit about cab drivers and safety, but a lot of the posts were from 2004/2006. Just curious for two female travelers if you have any tips...
to make sure they are registered (yellow plates) and write down the number
the blue/red ones are the better option
make sure the meter is turned on before going
Seems like the other posts are pretty outdated...I'm planning a trip to Chiang Mai in June and was wanting to go on a 2-3 day trek. I was wondering through word of other backpackers what company you used, type of trek, and if you would recommend them?
Hi there! My flight gets into BKK at 9.30am on July 1st, i'm trying to book flights down to Phuket. Would it be feasible to collect my bags from baggage collection and then check in for an 11am flight? The next flight is around 1.30pm, which I don't mind, but at that stage i'll be tired from the 14 hour flight.
So, just wondering on anyone previous experiences doing this. Is it feasible in such a short time frame?
Don;t know if this is a question suitable to this forum, but let me take a shot at it.
Does a student need to apply for a work permit/visa of one wants to do an unpaid internship in Thailand?
p.s. I am from France.
Hi, at the end of our trip we arrive in Bangkok after a night on the train from chiang mai. We will have already visited bangkok. We fly out that night. Are there any suggestions of cheap places close to the station with easy sky train access for the airport to leave our bags, have a shower for the day?
Thank you, M'lani

Long time reader - first time poster. I'm looking for some advice if you could help me?
Me and my girlfriend have just bought tickets and will be out in SEA for 6-8 months. We'll be landing in Bangkok in mid January and will be travelling through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and possibly Mongolia. The main aim is to see as much of the local cultures as possible and not hit too many touristy places, but we concede that to see some of the bigger attractions and most talked about places we'll have to live with it in some areas we visit.
The first bit of advice I need is the direction in which to travel Thailand and then into Laos. We'll be spending at least 6 weeks in Thailand and will be looking to do all travel by mainly train/ferry/bus. So far, we have decided to spend some time in Bangkok, then head south to Ko Tao, Koh Pha-ngan and Ko Samui. From th... more »
My husband and I are travelling to Thailand in four weeks and during that time we'll be spending five days on Koh Phangan. Our stay coincides with a full moon party and although we plan to check it out we don't want to be in the centre of all of the action the entire time. We'll be travelling backpacker style and are looking for a budget guesthouse/hostel. I have read that travellers should arrive about three days before a full moon party to find somewhere, so we'll be arriving five days before to be on the safe side.
So I have two questions:
1. Do you know of any clean but cheap places to stay that are close to where the full moon party is held but not in the centre?
2. Should I try and book a room before I leave Australia?
Thanks for all of your help,
Hello all. I currently live in Thailand and have done for several years. However, I am looking to get some things sent to me in the mail which are at present legal in the UK. One of them is the chemical 6-APB. Can anybody provide a sure list of controlled substances in Thailand or about 6-APB? I have exhausted all other resources and cannot seem to find any answers. I don't want to get something sent to me and then end up in prison for numerous years for doing so. Thanks
Air Asia now flies from Kuala Lumpur to Surat Thani. I wonder whether it was possible to use that as a way to visit Nakhon Si Thammarat?
Basically, the flight will arrive in Surat Thani airport at 11:05 morning. So, is it possible to just get a taxi or songthaew to the bus station and get a bus straight to Nakhon Si Thammarat and maybe see one or two attractions on that day before they close? And then assuming throughout our stay, we are staying in a Nakhon Si Thammarat hotel and using that as a base to explore the city and the surroundings, is it doable? Is there a way to make a day trip to Chaiya from Nakhon Si Thammarat? What kind of public transport and how frequent is the connection? Also, are there any other places around the region that are doable as a day trip from Nakhon Si Thammarat? We are interested in museums, temples, animals, walking in atmospheric old streets. We ar... more »
