Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Caribbean branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to the Caribbean here. It is highly recommended that new users do a search of the Thorn Tree before posting a new thread, as you may find many of the answers you seek that way.
Choosing a country to post to:
When you make a post and choose a country from the drop down menu, your post will be added to that country but will also display in the general Caribbean branch. If your post covers more than one country, please only add it to the country it is mostly about, not to all the countries - it won't increase the number of replies you get and will mean your post will appear multiple times in theCaribbean branch.

I'll be visiting DR in late Jan. 2010 and would like to spend some time exploring Sierra de Bahoruco National Park in the Southwest. I'm an amateur botanist and would like to hike around the park using a nearby town as a base. Is exploration of this park possible with out a car and are there any towns closer than Barahone that can be used as a base? Thanks for any information.

We are wondering if there is a local bus that we can catch outside of the airport at Puerto Plata to Sosua or a cheaper way to get out of the airport then a cab? Thanks

I am going to T&T in April with my son. he would like to take some East Indian cooking classes for 3 or 4 weeks while there.I would like to investigate the herbal medicines of the islands. Does anyone have knowledge of these activities anywhere on Tobago or Trinidad? Is there a list of cultural centers, or websites, where these classes might be held? merci, Chamae

My guesthouse tells me there is no pubic transportation on Sundays in St Lucia, so advises that we take a taxi costing $50US to get from the airport to Soufriere. If mini-buses are available, we would prefer to take the less expense option. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to find a bus around 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon in January? How much should it cost for a mini-bus on that route? Since we will have a couple of bags, maybe a taxi makes more sense?

I am arriving in Santo Domingo at 1.30pm on Christmas Day, December 25th.
Does anyone know if public transportation is running on the regular schedule?
I am short on time and want to make my way out to Bayahibe or Playa Limon as soon as possible, but wondering if I should even attempt to find a bus in that direction the same day or if it is smarter to spend the night in Santo Domingo and take the bus out the next day?
Also do i need to worry about rooms (low budget) available in Santo Domingo/ Bayahibe/ Playa Limon/ Higuey around Christmas or will I be fine just showing up and finding a place walking around? Are all hotels going to be open?
Thanks!

Since we need to have a stop-over in Kingston during my caribbean vacation and need to spend a night there (there isnt connection flight at the same day), i have some worries about a transfer from the Norman Manley airport to the hotel and back. I will travel with my little son, and since i have heard bad stories about a big crime there (including areas around the way from the airport to the city), i want to ask you, if it is really dangerous, and if i can avoid to go throw these areas (i have heard about 2 possible routes - more dangerous Mountain View Avenue, and less - but still dangerous South Camp Road). What can you advise me ? Or is it better to try find another flight route (not via Kingston) ?

I am planning a possible trip from Russia to the Caribbean in January.
The person would make their way to Moscow (as it is likely the best departure city in Russia) and then fly to the Caribbean.
Questions.
Are there any direct flights from Moscow to any of the islands? (that don't require visas for entry).
If a stop is required, are there any non-USA stops? (a transit visa would be required for the US).
Trying to avoid any transit visa/visa requirement for the trip.
TIA

Hi There,
I am going to Jamaica for about two weeks. Flying into Montego Bay and planning to stay about two/three nights there and then making our way to Negrill.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to best plan the trip? Also, any suggestions on accomodation? I have been having a look around and reviews on hotels are not exactly glowing!
We are planning to stay in a hostel in Montego Bay and then a hotel in Negrill and would love some advice.
Thanks!
Neelam.

Hello,
I'll be traveling solo in PR from 12/22/09 to 12/29/09. I plan to visit Vieques from 12/24 to 12/26 and am looking for fellow travelers who'd be interested in sharing the cost of transportation from San Juan to the ferry terminal in Fajardo. I plan to hop onto the 1PM ferry to Vieques on Dec 24 and return by the 4:30PM ferry on Dec 26. I've read that the fastest way to get to Fajardo from San Juan is to rent a car or take a taxi. I'd be ok with either of these options. I'm just throwing this out here with the hopes of meeting other travelers as well as getting the added bonus of saving some money on transportation! Let me know if you'd be interested!

My husband and I are planning a 3-week long stay in Bequia at the end of March / beginning of April (staying at Village apartments). One of my favorite parts of travel is hearing from others their "can't miss" restaurants & food. Any favorites? It can be a hole in the wall and out of the way - I'm just looking for the best food.
Also, we will be there for Easter regatta. Is there anything we shouldn't miss during this event?
Thank you in advance!

I am a mid 30s experienced male traveller that is looking for others to travel up Pico Duarte with me next week. I have tried Camping Tours and Rancho Baiguete but no one else is going up next week.
Anyone know of other tour companies? Anyone interested in joining me. I am in pretty good shape.
