Hi there, any good suggestions for where to stay in San Juan? Downtown vs Old town?

What cities in puerto Rico have the friendliest locals that is also safe. Besides San Juan please
Anyone know if the Hotel Ocean Front is still open or has it changed its name? I don't seem to be able to get any response from them. Also could anyone give me an idea how long its likely to take to drive there from Fajardo?
Is it possible to use the Puerto Rican public bus (Publicos) to get around the island?
If not, any suggestions on car rental agency that will have pick up in San Juan and drop off in Fajardo?
Just wondering how busy the local day tour operators (in San Juan) get during the Christmas holiday season. I want to do a few day/night tours to the bio-bays and rain forest, for example, around that time. I won't have a car, as my stay is short.
Should I book now or is it okay to wait until I arrive, which will be several days before Christmas? I am a bit concerned as I hear trips to the bio-bays are really popular and I don't want to miss seeing (one of) them.
Thanks for your help.
I have 3 weeks to spend in Puerto Rico starting next week and would live some suggestions on places to check out. I'm looking for unique places, hikes, beach, and just the great outdoors. I know it's easiest to see PR with a car but if possible I would like to use their public transit as much as possible. I find I gain so much more experience and knowledge about the place and it's culture and people.
Places I plan to check out are: El Yunque, San Juan, Culebra, not sure if Vieques will be on agenda as I'm already hitting the beach in Culebra but I do want to see the bioluminescent bays. I know Ricon is popular but still not sure if it's worth it.
I would love to do a trip around he whole island. Would consider renting a car for a week if it's necessary to get to some places but rather not drive for the whole 3 weeks.
Also if you can recommend places to s... more »
We're a couple looking to travel with our son in January or February for about a week when kiddo will be 8 or 9-months old. I'd love recommendations on easy and diverse places to go/see/stay that aren't too expensive. I'd also appreciate advise on getting or making baby food while there.
Thanks so much,

I am a 22 year old American student looking to immerse myself in the Spanish language over the upcoming summer 2014. I know it's early, but i'd like to start planning now so I could get things organized in advance and fully prepare for this.
I am completely fluent in both English and French with a working knowledge of Spanish. That said, the point of my going to Puerto Rico would be to work on my Spanish as much as possible. I realize that the Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico is quite different than Castillian and Latin American Spanish, but this doesn't bother me at all. At the end of the day, Spanish is Spanish, and being completely immersed in it for several months could only help me become more fluent.
I would love to work in the tourism industry, perhaps at a Hostel where I could meet new people and make new friends from around the world. That being said, I would be perf... more »

My extended family is coming to PR for the first time in November. I found a penthouse apartment near Fajardo called Palma Vista. It is off of Carretera Cabezas de San Juan. It is right on Seven Seas Beach - I have read this is good water for swimming (we have 3 young children traveling with us and want calm waters).
I was wondering if anyone knows of this place and/or has an opinion or info to share.
Any advice, thoughts are appreciated!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Puerto Rico in mid February. We would like to spend about 10 days there. We are very athletic and love to hike. We like the beach but are not the type of people that can spend all day sitting on a beach. We do not like touristy things and do not like group tours, etc. Are interested in really seeing the country and towns. Can anyone suggest areas we should visit and how to split up the 10 days.
I am a 47 year old female from the USA. I am going to be traveling in Puerto Rico for two weeks in Oct 2013. I am seeking a travel companion of either gender, any age who wishes to share expenses such as accomodation and keep each other safe.
Before we agree to travel together, I would like us to submit social networking URLs from sites such as FBook, CouchSurfing or LinkedIn as well as speak directly to our personal travel styles and interests in Puerto Rico.
I am a backpacker, prefer cheap if grimy hostels to fancy hotels, have no problems eating locally (ie street food) and have traveled to over 30 countries. I speak English fluently, can converse in Spanish for all essential needs and understand some limited Dutch. I am an non-smoker, not a vegetarian but can't eat gluten or soy protein. I drink alcohol lightly and am not a party all night waste the next day traveler.... more »
