Pig-tails.

Where did this name for a form of hair dressing come from? An old fashioned version was "braids", but the one I am most familiar with is just plain "plaits". So why pig-tails? Pigs' tails are not plaited!

Short Portuguese listening snippets

Hi, I need to brush up on my listening skills in Brazilian Portuguese. Can anyone recommend any youtube channels that have news stories or similar 2-3 minute snippets? I’ve found one or two random things but could do with a few all in the same place.

I’ve tried various podcasts (e.g. Café Brasil) but I find 15 minutes or so is too long to listen at my level. I need something shorter that I can listen to a couple of times.

Thanks

Apparently we have one Scott Fahlman to blame.

Spanish.

I'm stuck with my very elementary Spanish homework. Puede ayudarme, por favor! How would you ask two children their names?
Informally. Como se llamas o como te llama? Haven't quite got the hang of Usted or Tu yet, nor the plural terms.

Arabic in Hindi

There is a lot of words in hindi that come from Arabic. More than I thought.
When and how did the Arabs influence India?

Here a list of words that are from Arabic in both Hindi and Turkish (don't know the original).
Sabun-Sabun -Soap

Şeker-Şakr -Sugar

Sabah -Subuh -Morning

Çorba-Şorba -Soup

Badem-Badam -Almond

Meydan-Medan -Citysquare

Vakit -Vakt -Time

Köfte - Kofta -Meat-balls

The first two words are cognates in English, too, although their shape changed rather a bit more.

German teachers

I have noticed it is quite common to use LehrerInnen to refer to both male and female teachers. I think it used to be written as Lehrer/Innen and before that it was Lehrer/Lehrerinnen. Can anyone confirm that this was the progression and that LehrerInnen is now the accepted term?

Windy Topic....

For decades, The BBC (as well as other UK TV networks) has reported on hurricanes.
The word has (until tonight) always been pronounced 'Hurr i cun'.
Now all of a sudden the reporters are calling the latest one 'Hurr i cane' Sandy.
Maybe they've been told to say it that way, maybe they haven't been told anything.
Just wondered.

Hungarian to English translation please!

What does the phrase ' Na jol van am! ' mean in English ?

Saw it as a response to a photo on Facebook and the Google Translate response doesn't make sense..

It may be that some of the vowels are meant to be accented but the person didn't have access to a Hungarian keyboard..but any help gratefully received!

How do I say the following in Italian, please?

1. I would like to buy two two-day passes, please? (i.e. 2 x day pass, each valid for two days, for two people.)

2. I would like to buy two one-day passes, please? (i.e. 2 x day pass, each valid for one day, for two people.)

I tried Google Translate for #2, vorrei comprare due biglietti giornalieri, per favore - is it correct?

How about #1, please?

Grazie a tutti!!

An head

In the section of Blackston's commentries on the laws of England., in the section on the king's prerogative to fix standard weights and measures, I read:

Thus, under king Richard I, in his parliament holden at Westminster, A.D. 1197, it was ordained that there shall be only one weight and one measure throughout the kingdom . . . These original standards were called pondus regis, and mensura domini regis; and are directed by a variety of subsequent statutes to be kept in the exchequer, and all weights and measures to be made conformable thereto. But, as sir Edward Coke observes, though this hath so often by authority of parliament been enacted, yet it could never be effected; so forcible is custom with the multitude, when it hath gotten an head.

Why "an head"?

hold in high esteem

Can you hold 'something' rather than 'someone' in high esteem?

I have the following paragraph:
The building behind us used to be a school. It was closed down in the 1980s because of the PKK-perpetrated murders on school-teachers, whom they saw as agents of the Turkish state. Today the building is still used as a storage space and the children have to commute the 50 kilometres to the city for education, or do not go at all. This is a hard lot for a region where education is traditionally held in high esteem...

What else should I write?

fruity band names

kan anyone kontribute any further 'fruity' brand names to the ones below:

Apple, Orange, Blackberry

is it just koincidence that names of fruits are chosen for technologikal brands?

I also wondered about the kar brand mercedes, which supposedly is German, however the word Mercedes sounds distinktly spanish or at least un-german to me.

many thanks in advance for any kontributions.
