When was the last time you had morels, if ever?
I was looking through a Chicago supermarket's newspaper ad today, and I saw what they describe as fresh-picked morels for $39.99 per pound. (Would it really sound worse if they said $40 per pound?)
I realized, on seeing that price, that I hadn't had morels since my last trip to Paris, some years back, when I'm sure the meal itself cost less than that per-pound price. There was a Lyonnaise restaurant in the Place des Victoires that served roast chicken with potatoes and morels; I chose to add asparagus, which must have been the first of the season (late March) and absolutely delicious. Eighteen months later I was back in Paris, and returned to that restaurant for more of the same, minus the asparagus.
We have had a couple of real wet and cold days here in Sydney, enough so that it has very plainly announced the arrival of winter, so when we went shopping yesterday, on the top of our shopping list were stock bones for a base of our soups we make and put in our freezer.
We went over to the mall at Leichhardt Market Town, that has two supermarkets as well as a butcher shop, but were taken aback by the price of these items. Lamb necks and chicken frames are two of our favourite stock items it making a base for our soups, but the price was just amazing when you think about it, the lamb neck is mostly just bone but it was marked at $9.99 a kilo, and two small chicken frames we bought were over $6.

I walk by a house that has a huge Prickly Pear bush and its encrusted with fruit. I'd love to swipe a few and give them a try. I've never tried the fruit.. I have eaten the leaves which taste like green beens. I'll have to take a leather glove and sneek by after dark..its in the middle of the lawn closer to the pavement then the frontdoor, so I may be able to take a few without being noticed. Whats the best way to eat them ?
Anyone know where the tilapia carcass ends up when you finished with the fillet? Ground up for animal feed or simply dumped as garbage? It is still good for consumption as I learned in a resturant in Jakarta, Indonesia last month. And it is very tasty. The talipia carass cooked in fish stock with steamed rice cost about $2.50.
Some of you with long memories may recall the difficulties I have had finding candied citron (not "citron melon") in the US. I picked up a big hunk here last week, and while I was there I got a sizeable stalk of candied angelica.
Has anyone here ever used candied angelica? For what?
I passed on the candied violets, rose petals, and lilacs. Maybe next time. Has anyone here ever used any of them?
In last nights 'Gourmet Farmer' episode on SBS down here, Mathew Evans in his farm in rural Tasmania increased his larder by going out into the bush a found wild plants and herbs to cook with, including nettles that he used as a base for soup and herbs that were growing wild beside the dirt road that led to his farm.
There used also to be a character on the 'River Cottage' series of programes that was an expert on wild mushrooms, and that used to go out into the countryside and find food stuffs that were eatable and free, i wonder do any of you cook food that you find along the road or in the countryside or do you go out seeking mushrooms and other free stuff?
There's an interesting article in the New York Times ( link here ) about integrating schools in Slovakia. They interview the principal of a village school, who seems to be relatively progressive and has been leading efforts to integrate, but he mentions that opening the school canteen to Roma students has been more difficult than anticipated (the canteen previously served only white students and Roma had to bring their own food). He says they've had to teach the Roma children how to use forks, and some of them have trouble digesting warm food. On the weekend down here in Australia i stay up late and watch the EPL, when the wife goes to bed i just love to snack on tomato sauce, toasted sandwiches and oven baked potato wedges dipped in chilli sauce.
I know they may sound terrible, but is there any thing wierd or unhealthy that you snack on when there is no body else around?
The contents of mine
Top shelf: milk, homemade cole slaw, carrots, V8 juice, orange juice
Middle shelf: A&W root beer, Nestlé Crunch bar, eggs, butter, jar of yeast, sweet and sour sauce
Bottom shelf: Starbuck's mocha-flavored Frappuccino, mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, white bread, Laughing Cow cheese wedges, Kraft grate cheese
Two slices of that bread will go into the making of a salami sandwich for lunch, and the cole slaw will disappear at the same time.

A while ago i googled Haggis, in trying to find out why they were banned from importing them into the US from Scotland in the '70's, and i taken aback on what i discovered.
It seems there is a Haggis pizza, yes i do know it is hard to believe but there one and it is made by Cosmo's pizza in Scotland, this is the most unusual uses for a food i have ever seen, i mean a pizza topping of Haggis, this blows my mind!
