Just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on train safety for solo women travellers going from Russia to China.
I will be training it from Europe to China and I can go either the Silk Route via Kazakhstan or the Trans-Mongolian Railway. Both fit in fine with my itinerary but I have concerns being a solo female traveller going through Central Asia - need I be?

I considered posting this thread on the North Korea branch but thought that I might get a wider range of responses by putting it here instead (and the subject matter is applicable to a handful of places other than the DPRK).
In a North Korea trip report posted In February, a TT user made the following comment when introducing his thread:
"+During the preparation for my trip, a few one-sided members that frequent the same forums as I, scolded me for visiting a repressive country where people starve, where there was a strong possibility that they would incarcerate me for life, among other things; you know the type. If you are such a kind of person, don't try this experience, as you're going to hate it. To enjoy North Korea you must have an open mind; must be non judgemental; must respect other people’s opinions, even if you disagree; must realize that we may consider our system th... more »
I was told that most house moving insurance does not cover your fragile items unless they are packed by a professional moving company like http://www.removalshub.co.uk. Does anyone know if this is true? If so can anyone recommend any London based removal companies?
I'm looking to establish a website and a Facebook page dedicated to exposing, in one place, the corruption beneath popular tourist hotspots around the world, so that future tourists may be warned against accidentally supporting damaging practices. It would be a hub of independent journalism, increasingly important at a time when tourists want to be informed but struggle to find advice concisely and in one place.
My question is, does such a website already exist, either for a region or the entire world? I haven't found much in my searches - only undoubtedly useful but scattered minefields like this - and it would be a shame for me to dedicate time to establishing a website if someone's already done a lot of legwork.
Hi to all citizens and friends of Vanuatu and those who are yet to discover this special friendly, peaceful corner of the world.
A number of us are deeply concerned about the plight of our iconic hermit crab aptly named “The Coconut Crab”. Basically they are being eaten into extinction and we are trying to bring this issue to the forefront before it is too late. There is a mountain of information on this amazing creature (the largest land crab in the world) on the web, so will not tire you with data but if you are coming to Vanuatu or live here we would like to invite you our Forum where this is being discussed: http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g294144-i4912-k6255616-o20-Tripadvisor_Restaurant_Reviews-Port_Vila_Efate.html

Hi, There is a lot of debate on the web at the moment about the ethics of volunteer travel. Commercial organisation v NGOs - is it right to volunteer in an orphanage? If you are looking for advise and information take a look at these two facebook pages. They have been set uo specifically to promote better volunteering and child protection in tourism - and help potential volunteers ask the right questions to find ethical organisations. If you have any questions or concerns about an experience you have had please post too.https://www.facebook.com/BetterChildProtection and https://www.facebook.com/BetterVolunteering
Hi! I am new to this forum, but i just wanted to share with you my positive experience.Summer Trip 2012.
I wanted to thank organisers ( young couple from Hereford) again for the trip to Nizhne Selishtye, Zakarpats'Ka Oblast, Ukraine and wanted to give you a little snippet of some of the stunning sights and what we got up to on our adventure!
Where to start! We stayed in a small village with a local very welcoming and friendly family who supplied us with gorgeous cuisine in the evenings as well as for a party on the last night with the local band, Hudaki. Sadly there was a language barrier but it wasn't a problem, we met local shepherds up in the picturesque transcarpathians and sampled their fresh cheese as well as visiting a cheese factory to sample more varieties of cheese!
Theres just too much to mention! We went to a herbalist and beekeeper via a horse carriage ride round t... more »
I was just wondering if anyone has used or is considering using one of the personal tracking devices whilst away?
A friend has told me you can put it in your bag and find out the exact location of it from anywhere in the world, so you can give details to your family too so they know your whereabouts.
Any advice on which one to get?

As the mods don't appear to know what the word means, let's see if we can say things here that they won't allow on the regular threads about TT.
Brad Kelly is in negotiations to buy a major share of TT - maybe next week. If you google you'll find pages of posts about it. Why are the mods too scared to allow mention of it?
Hi all- we have signed up for a week long guided small group trip to Ukraine starting 29 June, but there aren't quite enough other people going as yet. Anyone interested in joining in? It sounds fascinating to us- small guided visits, walking and village stays, traditional music and food. We havent found any other way of getting to know a place quite so well and there is no tourist infrastructure in Ukraine so this is really the only way of experiencing it
Here below is an article which I have written to be published in my University paper to make people aware of certain simple things that could go wrong when travelling, and what you should do to make the damages of these problems as minimal as problem. Also, at the end of the article there are some links on where you can go to get certain information before you travel.
A Lads Tale (A Guide on How Not to Plan Your Holiday)
The Easter holidays are coming up. Perhaps you’re thinking about going on holiday to a ski resort? Booking a lads/girly holiday to Europe? Organising your Year Abroad? If you nodded your head to any of these then read on…
Sure, we all feel like we’re impervious to harm. The notorious attitude of ‘it won’t happen to me’ always springs to mind when we hear these terrifying stories of what happens abroad to droves of unlucky tourists. However, below i... more »
I have been traveling and working around Asia for nearly 4 years, i have no insurance but has not bothered me too much. I am leaving to Africa later this year and have decided it is probably a good idea to get some insurance. Any recommendations on good but cheap insurance? Just needs to cover medical problems really.. I have been looking at some but they all say that because i have not been in one country for a set time for such a long time that it works out really expensive. I will only need it for about 4 months... any advice?
