Welcome to the Travellers with Disabilities branch of Thorn Tree. This is a space for you to get helpful advice and insights about travelling with a disability, or share stories, tips and resources that you've found useful, or think others may.
In this thread we'll keep a running list of online resources we think are handy. Feel free to post your suggestions - we'll keep the list growing. Please note, these are not services we have necessarily used or have a formal affiliation with - just links we think you might find helpful.
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so it's a good idea to browse through the branch, or use the search function before you post a message.
Happy exploring!

What are the best National Parks for those who use wheelchairs? I've already been to Yellowstone, Mesa Verde, Arches, Zion and Bryce Canyon, so I'm looking to visit a different park or parks this summer. I use a motorized scooter.
I tried the National Parks Service website, but there is too much information for me to digest all at once. I'd love to hear people's experiences as wheelchair users, either good or bad.

As a frequent traveler, I always see disabled travelers wanders to many cities, is it possible that airline companies will allow the disabled traveler to use the executive lounges for layovers? Because I guess these areas often have better seating and restroom accommodations.
Hi,
I have a pre existing medical condition that requires only occasional chiropractic treatment and otherwise fit and healthy, play sports etc.
But ... even though the doctor has certified me fit to travel, I'm having trouble getting travel insurance because of the occasional chiropractic treatment, which in hindsight I probably shouldn't have metnioned. Can anyone recommend a nicer travel insurer, based in Australia?
thanks.

I cant seem to find it. Can not imagine that it would not still be part of L.P.s site. Part of Thorn tree? Can anyone tell me steps to retrieve it?
Investigating the possibility of going to an international conference in Jomtien in 2010. Anyone know of any wheelchair friendly accommodation? Two bedroom apartments would be optimal.
Also any ideas for travelling around the area? My friend is used to driving her little scooter around but maybe the footpaths are not user friendly Still have to investigate if we can carry motorised sit on scooter with us on airline.
Heard terrible reports about incorrect handling and wrecking of wheelchairs by QF and Jetstar . Guess others may be just as difficult to convince that appropriate storage is way to go.
Will cross post on Thailand branch as well but thought specialised knowledge here may be especially useful.
Thanks

Have any of y'all visited Halong Bay in Vietnam who are wheelchair users? How was it? How much could you get to? Any additional advice on travelling to Vietnam is appreciated.
I can walk with crutches for shorter distances and stairs, but use a wheelchair for longer distances.
Thanks,
David

I'm in a wheelchair and will be travelling Europe using the Eurail. I can stand up and walk a few steps, but that's about it. I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience or knowledge about aspects of Europe for someone in a wheelchair. I'm mostly curious about accommodations (need hotels without stairs) and cities that are or are not relatively accessible. Can anyone help me out with some information? Thanks.
Hi, I thinking about going to Negombo in Sri lanka for a holiday/ break with my carer. I have ms and use a wheelchair to get around. Would this be a suitable place for me? Thanks in advance

my partner and i are hoping to travel to northern india in 2010. i have MS and can walk short distances otherwise i use a manual wheelchair. rather than travel totally independent is it possible to hire a tour guide with a car in the various cities we wish to visit. if so where might we find a guide and what might we expect to pay. i am guessing the buses and trains maybe too crazy busy especially with my chair. thanks for any info, sandra

Anyone have a recommendation for someone in the KL area? Need to review medications with someone and possibly need some talk therapy (but not required).
I need to help someone hire some medical equipment for a hotel stay in central Brussels. Specifically a Nimbus air mattress and a hoist. Can anyone provide me with details of a company that can supply these?
I tried google but didn't get anything - I assume because these will be small, local companies.
thanks in advance

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Thailand during the upcoming December/January. The only area of concern is that I use a wheelchair to get around and don't know what access is like in the country. I get lifted up stairs all the time into buddies' places and such so that's not a huge issue but what about the basics? Are public restrooms accessible? Is there public transportation or cabs that accomodate folks in chairs? Are there hostels or any way to find host families that could provide wheelchair access?
Not everything needs to meet ADA standards or anything like that. I use a pretty compact manual chair and can fit into relatively tight spaces. We'd really like to get all over the country if we have the time... Bangkok, the North, the South. Just really looking for some good advice. Any kind of experience or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!

Hey there
Am currently in Malaysia and wondering about hiring a car. Would prefer a self drive option. Does anyone know where I could hire a car with hand controls in Malaysia/Singapore?
Thanks
