Welcome to the Travellers with Disabilities branch of Thorn Tree. This is a space for you to get helpful advice and insights about travelling with a disability, or share stories, tips and resources that you've found useful, or think others may.
In this thread we'll keep a running list of online resources we think are handy. Feel free to post your suggestions - we'll keep the list growing. Please note, these are not services we have necessarily used or have a formal affiliation with - just links we think you might find helpful.
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so it's a good idea to browse through the branch, or use the search function before you post a message.
Happy exploring!

I'm in a wheelchair and will be travelling Europe using the Eurail. I can stand up and walk a few steps, but that's about it. I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience or knowledge about aspects of Europe for someone in a wheelchair. I'm mostly curious about accommodations (need hotels without stairs) and cities that are or are not relatively accessible. Can anyone help me out with some information? Thanks.

my partner and i are hoping to travel to northern india in 2010. i have MS and can walk short distances otherwise i use a manual wheelchair. rather than travel totally independent is it possible to hire a tour guide with a car in the various cities we wish to visit. if so where might we find a guide and what might we expect to pay. i am guessing the buses and trains maybe too crazy busy especially with my chair. thanks for any info, sandra

Anyone have a recommendation for someone in the KL area? Need to review medications with someone and possibly need some talk therapy (but not required).

I need to help someone hire some medical equipment for a hotel stay in central Brussels. Specifically a Nimbus air mattress and a hoist. Can anyone provide me with details of a company that can supply these?
I tried google but didn't get anything - I assume because these will be small, local companies.
thanks in advance

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Thailand during the upcoming December/January. The only area of concern is that I use a wheelchair to get around and don't know what access is like in the country. I get lifted up stairs all the time into buddies' places and such so that's not a huge issue but what about the basics? Are public restrooms accessible? Is there public transportation or cabs that accomodate folks in chairs? Are there hostels or any way to find host families that could provide wheelchair access?
Not everything needs to meet ADA standards or anything like that. I use a pretty compact manual chair and can fit into relatively tight spaces. We'd really like to get all over the country if we have the time... Bangkok, the North, the South. Just really looking for some good advice. Any kind of experience or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!

Hi All,
I am a 21 year old diabetic starting a 6 month RTW trip in November. After much research I have found loads of information however none that is exactly what I am after. People advise that you take along twice the supplies you need. Now this would obviously be 12 months for myself and as I am on Novorapid and Lantus disposable pens this is a hell of a lot of supplies and is going to take up a load of space.
Now I accept this my querie is: has anyone had and overcome this problem? if so how?? I know about the Frio packs which sound great however the XL only fits 10 pens whereas I will probably need a lot more capacity than this. Obviously the storage method would also need to be a cooler of some sort (Frio wallet)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am becoming extremely stressed and concerned after the great deal of research I have already done.
Thanks
Matt

Hi everyone, on WT we've been having a discussion about terms used for and by people with disabilities, and it occurred to me it might be of interest to people here - it would be great to have more informed input.

Are there any countries outside of the EU, North America that have legislation in place where hotels and Guesthouses have to provide wheelchair access?
I am thinking along the lines of cheaper countries of Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America...
Hello. Does anyone know if you can trek by riding on a pony or donkey in the Himalayas (presumably with a guide)? I've got a physical disability which means I can't walk long distances or on rough or steep terrain. I'm OK on short walks. Appreciate any advice.
EHRC (equality human rights commission) will send you a hard copy, or you can read or download online. It gives important rights in EU airports and on planes leaving them
You have legal rights, if you are mobility impaired, to have a smooth journey (assisted where appropriate) from arrival at departure airport to leaving the destination airport
This will often run counter to the same old way things used to be done. Often it will contradict old policy. ( So, old policy is now illegal and must be overturned instantly) e.g. the check in staff and aircrews must allow you to choose the seat most suited to your disability needs. They cannot demand that all mobility impaired passengers use window seats, or all use aisle seats
There have been cases reported on the bbc ouch boards, showing not enough travellers know their rights and not enough airlines and airports ...
