Our family is spending about a week in HK in between Australia and Spain, and we might surprise our kids with a trip to the Disneyland there. Can anyone who's visited there tell me how it compares to the Disneyland in LA? If we spend one or two nights at a hotel on the park, which is the best?
I'm NOT a Disneyland person but know my kids would probably love it for a day or two!
thanks,
Sarah

Can anyone share his/her experiences with me about travelling with child(ren) to: 1) Manaus, 2) rivertrip Manaus to Barcelos / Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira, 3) the area around Boa Vista? Any commends most welcome! (our son is 9 years old)? We are visiting a friend so have a "home".
We are going to Hong Kong next week with our one year old daughter. The guidebook we have doesn´t really provide a lot of kid info, so here are a few questions we hope someone knows the answers to!
1. Is breastfeeding in public (on a park bench, for example) OK or not? I have a "nursing cover" so no boobs would be flashed.
2. What are general attitudes to taking babies along for dinner at more upmarket restaurants? (I´m assuming more everyday type places wouldn´t mind)
3. Do restaurants in general agree to prepare something different for children to eat? Like steam a few vegetables? We don´t want her to eat sugar yet, and I know there is sugar in some chinese dishes. She´s not too fond of canned baby food and is accustomed to eat what we´re having. Loves rice :).
4. Are there any indoor play areas, in some shopping malls for example, in case rain is pouring down? (We plan ...

Hi, We have done quite a bit of travelling both by ourselves and with 2 kids but are now planning our next trip with 4. ages 7,8,11,13.
Any ideas would be helpful.
-Im wondering how people chose accommodation eg 1 or 2 rooms,
-booking in advance due to more difficult accommodation issues.

My wife and I have a one year window to travel, more precisely the 2011 - 2012 school year. My daughter will be 8 on departure. Where would be a place to start planning. I have Thailand and south east Asia but what other options are there and why. Please share I would like to get this rolling and pre-planning is important for me.
Thanks

Hi fellow travellers,
Have any of you ever travelled in Spain, Morocco or Portugal in the peak of Summer with young children? I would greatly appreciate any advice. My husband and I have backpacked before without children but we realise we'll have to arrange things differently now for our, the kids' and other travellers' comfort – probably no shared dorms anymore!
Our time of travel is set to be from the end of July 2010, for approx. 1 month through August, to tie in with a family wedding in Ibiza. I am aware that this will be the hottest time of year so we'll just have to do the best we can to 'stay cool' :)
We took our two kids aged then 1 and 3 to Bali, Indonesia earlier this year which was lovely as the kids are pretty easygoing and the local people just so warm-hearted and welcoming of all especially children. +For the 2010 trip we'll have a new baby 4 months old with ...

My husband and I are considering a trip to Cancun and the surrounding area (not the resorts) around December 21st-31st. Having been shoestring backpack travelers for years, this would be our first trip since having a baby (now 20 months old). This is a bit last minute to be planning a trip, but I want to take him up on it because I think it would be great for us to get out and remember what it's like to travel together. If you can help me with any of these questions, it would make a big difference for us in taking this leap into the world of family travel.
Should we worry about Swine Flu being particularly bad in the Yucatan? None of us are vaccinated. Numerous people I know and work with have already had it, but we have not had it yet.
Should we worry about other diseases such as Malaria in that area?
We have never made hotel reservations before in our travels - just looked ...

Hello all - newbie here,
Well we are off on Saturday, first to Hong Kong to visit friends then on to Vietnam for 2 week adventure before heading to South Thailand to see family (scots abroad).
I have done so much reading about Vietnam that my head is buzzing, but I would love to know which places people recommend. My children are 3 and 8, but we live in a very rural area of the Scottish highlands so they are used to a lot of roughing it and walking etc.
I would love to head to Sapa, but a few of the reviews re. aggressive touts are scaring me a little. I am keen to take the night train down towards Danang and Hoi An, but as we will be there in mid - December believe that it may be pretty wet ? As for nearer Saigon we would love to see the Mekong but maybe hard going for 3 year old in a boat?
Any ideas on good hotels would be much appreciated - also how people went...

it will be our first time in Africa.
We've been in Latin America en Thailand before.
Is travelling through Tanzania comparible?
can we book safari in Tanzania, or should we book at home in advance ? we heard children below 12 are not always allowed on safari. Suggestions are welcome !
thanks for your ideas

Hi folks,
We've been talking lately about how to better serve our travelling parents and families. Our editorial teams already learn a lot from your terrific discussions, but we also wanted to give you a chance to specifically tell us what you might like to see us do differently, or improve.
What kind of information is most helpful to you when heading somewhere with kids in tow? What kind of advice isn't helpful? Would you like a child-friendly icon (to denote child-friendly cafes, hotels, entertainment, etc)? Anything else you'd like us to think about?

I never thought I'd enjoy travel by bus, but it turns out it can be great for families. We did a 17-hour bus trip in Argentina instead of flying and had a surprisingly relaxing, funny time. The key is to find a bus that has sleeper seats. My daughter wrote a blog post with all the details from her 11-year-old perspective, http://www.collyworld.com/2009/11/bus-in-argentina/
Good thing she liked it because we're going back on the bus for a long haul to Chile.
How about bus travel in Spain, Italy and Greece? We need to figure out how to get around there and would prefer to avoid car rentals. Any tips re bus vs. train vs. car in Southern Europe are much appreciated.
thanks!
Sarah

Not quite travel with kids but almost!! I'm looking for a honeymoon destination for two weeks in March travelling from NZ. I'll be almost six months pregnant by this stage so mostly want it to be relaxing but still want something fairly interesting. I don't want to travel too far on a plane, maximum about 12 hours.
We were thinking about Hawaii but I'm worried that the water will be too rough for swimming and that it will be a little boring for me, no surfing, boat trips etc.
I was also considering Thailand. I have been there plenty of times so know I'd be comfortable there but would have to make it special enough to be different from all the other trips.
I'd love to go to Japan but would be concerned about the lack of personal space, small hotel rooms and the food being a little difficult (too much raw fish, seafood etc).
Or even something completely different like...

Hi - I posted the following message in our Lonely Planet Group, "Long-Term Family Travel and Sabbatical," and am reposting it here in case anyone has advice. Please join our LP group http://www.lonelyplanet.com/groups/long-term-family-travel if you're doing long-term family travel!
With the holidays approaching (our American holiday of Thanksgiving is just a few days away), I'm wondering if anyone has advice or anecdotes for holidays on the road. We will have a very un-traditional Thanksgiving somewhere in Santiago, followed by Christmas at the peak of summer in New Zealand. All in all, very different for our family this year! I'm looking forward to weaving in old traditions (such as expressing gratitude on Thanksgiving, singing carols for Christmas) in our new settings, but I worry the kids will be homesick and consequently I want to do what I can to have happy holidays for them.

I'd like to take my 9-year old son on a two-month trip this summer during June/July/August. We've already spent considerable time in Central and South America, the States, and in SE Asia, so I'd like to take him somewhere else that has a variety of cultures, influences, geographies, etc. Was considering India or China but am a bit hesitant to go to either one given the warning posts by other travelers about how beastly hot and wet both are during that time. We aren't total budget travelers, but we're not top-end either. Somewhere moderately priced. Your thoughts?
