advice for family holidays on the road?

Hi - I posted the following message in our Lonely Planet Group, "Long-Term Family Travel and Sabbatical," and am reposting it here in case anyone has advice. Please join our LP group http://www.lonelyplanet.com/groups/long-term-family-travel if you're doing long-term family travel!
With the holidays approaching (our American holiday of Thanksgiving is just a few days away), I'm wondering if anyone has advice or anecdotes for holidays on the road. We will have a very un-traditional Thanksgiving somewhere in Santiago, followed by Christmas at the peak of summer in New Zealand. All in all, very different for our family this year! I'm looking forward to weaving in old traditions (such as expressing gratitude on Thanksgiving, singing carols for Christmas) in our new settings, but I worry the kids will be homesick and consequently I want to do what I can to have happy holidays for them.

June-August: where to go?

I'd like to take my 9-year old son on a two-month trip this summer during June/July/August. We've already spent considerable time in Central and South America, the States, and in SE Asia, so I'd like to take him somewhere else that has a variety of cultures, influences, geographies, etc. Was considering India or China but am a bit hesitant to go to either one given the warning posts by other travelers about how beastly hot and wet both are during that time. We aren't total budget travelers, but we're not top-end either. Somewhere moderately priced. Your thoughts?

Sulawesi or or good spots in Indonesia

We are going to Indonesia for 3 weeks in July 2010 and taking 2 kids, (3 and 5). We want a location you can fly direct on Air Asia (so from KL), which is good for kids. We thought southern Sulawesi might be good. Anyone been, especially with kids? We've been to Bali lots of times. Also Sumatra and Java ( a litle bit) both before kids. Sulawesi would be new for us. Any ideas, comments, advice???? Thanks.

Best airline for kids?

Just curious what others think. Which airline do you think is the most kid-friendly and why?

Car seats on plane

I've heard about people taking car seats on planes but i've never actually seen anybody do it. Most of the web sites talking about it refer to US carriers and domestic flights.

Anybody have any idea how this works in Europe? We are flying next week with Vueling from Paris to Rome and so far we have always checked our seat. However, it's gotten lost twice and this time we bought a separate ticket for our daughter (until now she used to travel in our lap).

I am quite keen to take her car seat on board, if only so that it won't get lost, as well as to keep her safe, but is there anything is should know or do?

thanks

worth reading if you're considering long-term family travel

Hi -- in case you missed it, this NYTimes Frugal Traveler Q&A is worth reading; it's with the woman who does the soultravelers3 blog, and it describes their multi-year "digital nomad" lifestyle. http://frugaltraveler.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/11/qa-with-jeanne-dee-the-nomadic-family-traveler/?ref=travel
What really interests me are the many comments that follow the article, debating the pros & cons of travel and its affect on the child and her education. If you're interested in this topic and in the midst of or planning a long-term family journey of your own, I encourage you to join our LP Group, Long-Term Family Travel and Sabbatical, http://www.lonelyplanet.com/groups/long-term-family-travel ... I'd love to get more discussion and networking going on there!
Happy travels,
Sarah (& family, currently in Argentina, 2.5 months into a year-long trip)

Families on Gap Years

Hi,

Are you taking a career break, packing up the kids and going off to experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures?

Are you set on giving your children an education unlike any they would find in a classroom?

Channel 4 (UK) are producing a new series about the growing number of British families putting day-to-day life on hold to see the world with their children. Through the films we hope to highlight just how rewarding, educational and most importantly possible it is to go travelling with the kids.

If you or someone you know is planning a family trip with a difference we'd love to hear from you!

Mongolia/Trans siberian with Kids

Hi,
Currently planning trip across trans siberian and into mongolia with 2 kids. One will be 4 and other one just over a year. We are planning to go in May - July as hoping that best weather wihtout being too hot.
I am really looking to hear from anyone who has done that or similar - really specifically trying to get info on travelling around Mongolia (and will post on that thread too). I know mongolia difficult in terms of transport - has anyone done it and how did it go. Seems that going a tour is easy option - but we have never been tour people in past (always traveled independently) and to be honest not sure that tour would be flexible enough with kids. Is it hard to get food that kids will eat in mongolia? guide books suggest food not great anywhere.
ANyway advice really appreciated.
Mags

toddlers in Paris

Not exactly globe trotting but what we can afford for now, family holida to Paris for a few days beginning of December - two adults and a one year old currently crawling, may or may not be walking by the time we go, I'm betting on not! As it's winter I can't really rely on parks and outdoor spaces to get him out of his sling to burn some energy if he's still crawling. Does anyone have any ideas for thinsg to do/places to go to in Paris where our baby might be able to roam free a little? We're renting an apartment near the Eiffel Tower, happy to get public transport but generally walk everywhere

Thanks!

Travelling with a toddler in Eastern Europe in Winter

My husband, daughter and self are planning a 5 week travel through Europe and Eastern Europe before we return home in January. We are planning to leave the UK with first stop Stockholm, christmas in Berlin and then down through Prague, Budapest, Slovenia into Istanbul.

We have travelled for 7 months with our daughter across the globe but we have travelled in heat and humidity. She has never been in the cold.

Coming from Australia I am not used to really cold winters either.

I know about using layers and thermals etc but am worried about how she will cope with walking around the city. We would normally put her in the carrier but am worried that she will be freezing.

Any advice for making our 20month old as comfortable as possible in the cold weather while travelling.

thanks

Maleisian Borneo with kids: good idea or not?

Hi there,

I'm planning a trip with 2 kids (5 & 6 years old) to Malaysia next year. I would like to travel to Borneo, but I'm having doubts because of the danger of Malaria. Of course there are vaccinations, but is that safe for such young children?
