This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.
The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

I'm going for a 3 month backpacking trip to Europe trip next year and have a couple of electronics related questions. I'll be going by train and staying in hostels. I'm from Canada.
1. Do I take my cell phone with me? I wouldn't be making calls back to Canada with it but I'm thinking for emergencies. I think the costs would be huge because of the roaming right? So it wouldnt matter if it was a local call because it's still a Canadian phone. So I'm not sure about this.
2. I'm buying a point and shoot camera. Should I buy one that takes those square lithium batteries that are rechargable or one that takes AA batteries and take the NIMH batteries and the recharger for it. What will work best for my situation.
3. I have a Zune Mp3 player. How do I recharge it? It only comes with a cable that I plug into my USB port on my computer and I'm not planning on taking my lapto...

My husband and I are planning a year long trip. We will be traveling through South America, China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Middle East, Egypt, and Morocco. I speak French and Spanish, but was worried about the language barrier in Asia and the Middle East.
From experience, are electronic translators helpful or should I save my money?

As a travel and tech junkie, I heart my iphone. I've been traveling around using it for 3 months now....took it Europe and Thailand.
Here are the best 11 apps I could find that really help you out when you travel:
http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/good-iphone-travel-apps/
Some people added some in the comments too. I'm particularly interested in the wikime app.
What are you favorites?

Hello,
I want to advice the iSayHello language courses for iPhone or iPod Touch!
I used them while travelling across Europe and for me they have been very helpful.
They are not a dictionary more a talking travel help, because they have all important phrases inculded and it really helps a lot to hear how to pronounce Polish, Italian or Spanish.
you can find the of course in the AppStore or you can have a look on isayhello.mobi
Thanks to the developers - it makes traveling easier!
Enjoy

GPS...to have or not to have
I do some trekking but it's easy trekking. Lots and lots of day hikes. Teahouse to TH or Guesthouse to GH are fun for me...a week or less,
If it involves camping then I get guides/porters. I don't like to get lost in a jungle or on a mountain and I don't like to carry anything...close to nothing I carry.
I've only recently added a camera to my pack and am in the final process of picking out and buying a netbook. Just replaced my altimeter and compass with a casio pathfinder watch.
I'm a miser on space and weight but am considering a GPS.
For what reason I ask myself?

I have lots of problems with Firefox because it crashes on certain sites (such as the New York times if I am logged in and a comment box is on the same page (but not if I am not logged in or if there is no comment box) as well as the German weekly zeit.de and other "harmless" sites). I've tried uninstalling and installing it again, downgrading to an earlier version, nothing helps, it keeps crashing on certain sites.
The Internet Explorer doesn't crash as often, it still crashes more than it should but considerably less than firefox, but it is really slow and cumbersome, so I thought I'll try Opera instead.
However, when I start Opera, the IE opens instead, shows "http://%22c/Program%20Files/Opera/opera.exe%22" in the address bar and tells me it "cannot display the webpage" ?!
I've tried restarting, uninstalling and installing Opera again, but to no avail. Whenever I start O...

I have a compact, easy-to-use camera, and I'm looking for something a little higher end. I don't care that much about videos or face recognition (won't be taking many photos of people). I'm looking for the highest picture quality I can get with at least a 10x zoom, and it would be nice if it could work in lower light conditions. My price range is around $300-500 USD and it seems like most of the super-zooms in that range have debatable image quality (based on reading reviews). Any suggestions? I'm currently looking at the Canon Powershot SX20IS and Panasonic Lumix.

Hi
I have searched on this subject and found a few pages of interest but am still struggling to find an insurer that will cover me for the following:
Single Trip for 3 months to Australia / New Zealand
Currently residing in the Uk, so insurance needs to be based from here
Need to cover £1700 Macbook Pro and £1200 worth of Digital SLR and Lens.
My home and contents policy does cover me for 'away from the home' loss and theft but only for a max of 30 days. Does anyone know of any specialist companies that will offer this, as all of the ones I can find only offer £200 - 300 max for 'valuables'
The only option I have found so far is to insure my laptop and camera using a specialist insurer here in the UK for 'worldwide' coverage but that is around £150 for each item.
Any ideas welcome, thanks.

Hi all,
Wanted to post about a Google Maps mashup I've made which may be of interest to you guys...
www.RoomAtlas.com plots 53k hotels on an interactive map, with live pricing and availability. Special offers are highlighted, and I've added TripAdvisor reviews, Google Street View, Wikipedia placemarks and hotel photos, with the aim of making it a "one stop" for choosing the right hotel.
Though it's early days, we've had some great feedback and I'm not aware of any similar tool. Hope you'll find it useful - I'd love to hear your feedback.
Happy travels!

I'm looking to add a travel map of my trip to my blog. Any suggestions for widgets out there that can do this?
Thanks!
