This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.
The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

Hi
I have searched on this subject and found a few pages of interest but am still struggling to find an insurer that will cover me for the following:
Single Trip for 3 months to Australia / New Zealand
Currently residing in the Uk, so insurance needs to be based from here
Need to cover £1700 Macbook Pro and £1200 worth of Digital SLR and Lens.
My home and contents policy does cover me for 'away from the home' loss and theft but only for a max of 30 days. Does anyone know of any specialist companies that will offer this, as all of the ones I can find only offer £200 - 300 max for 'valuables'
The only option I have found so far is to insure my laptop and camera using a specialist insurer here in the UK for 'worldwide' coverage but that is around £150 for each item.
Any ideas welcome, thanks.

Hi all,
Wanted to post about a Google Maps mashup I've made which may be of interest to you guys...
www.RoomAtlas.com plots 53k hotels on an interactive map, with live pricing and availability. Special offers are highlighted, and I've added TripAdvisor reviews, Google Street View, Wikipedia placemarks and hotel photos, with the aim of making it a "one stop" for choosing the right hotel.
Though it's early days, we've had some great feedback and I'm not aware of any similar tool. Hope you'll find it useful - I'd love to hear your feedback.
Happy travels!

I need some help setting up home wireless internet service.
I'm going to be moving in with someone soon who has cable internet service, connecting via a cat5 cable to her PC-based laptop.
I am a mac user and we've tried but found we can't simply plug her cat5 cable into my laptop and connect to the internet. I assume this is because she is a PC and I'm a mac.
I tried to go to radio shack and best buy and ask what equipment or setup we might need for both of us to be able to connect to the internet and the salespeople were completely clueless ("so....you want a splitter?"---I don't know. Is that what I want? If I knew I wouldn't be asking you.)
So. What do I need for both of us to use the internet at her place? Is there a splitter that would allow both a mac and a pc to be on the internet at the same time? If we need a wireless router, is there any particular features...

I am about to start an Africa bicycle tour.I would like to keep a blog to share stories, photos and small video recordings on my way.A veteran bike traveller the ride is not a problem but I don't know much about gadgets.I am looking for a small, compact, digital camera able to make photos with just the minimun quality required to post it in a blog and is cheap 'cause I don't feel comfortable carrying arround expensive stuff. The blog purpose is only to tell about my trip and travel philosophy and not to earn from it or to make it to the 100's best then photo quality is not very important to me but what I want to tell.Mainly views, seldom people portraits. Thank's to everyone.

My husband and I are non-techies. We're going to be traveling and want one camera that can take stills and video with super-easy uploading to the internet. We will be using internet cafes only--no personal laptop. Both the Kodak Zi8 and the Easyshare seem to do the same thing fairly well but I don't quite understand if they need their own software to upload photos and video to a blog. We are less concerned with quality and more concerned with ease of use. Does anyone have experience with these cameras?

Heading off to Ethiopia for a few months, am looking for a good camera to take with me. I've narrowed it down to the above two and was wondering if anyone has any comments on either or could suggest a better option.
My budget is around £130 so i'm not expecting miracles but just want something easy to use that will take good panaromic and portrait photos.
Also the Fuji takes 4xAA batteries, whereas the Lumix has a Li-ion battery - is there any advantage/disadvantage of either apart from the cost of buying rechargable batteries and a charger?
Any help would be massively appreciated.
Cheers
Ian
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forums, so hi!
I'm planning a trip starting in Beijing and ending in St. Petersburg via rail through Mongolia and Siberia. As such I've started a blog on my preparation for the trip (as I'll be doing it in winter!). The url is
http://jasongoestorussia.blogspot.com
My latest post is on the tech stuff I'll be taking with me, and in particular the apps for iPod Touch/iPhone that I think would be useful for travellers. Feel free to check it out and let me know if you have any questions. After the trip I intend to update it with lots of photos and stories.
Cheers,
// JC

I know that Travel Tech might not be the right forum for this question, but y'all have a lot more activity than Responsible Travel so I hope you can forgive me for cross-posting.
I'm toying with setting up an off-the-grid backpacking lodge as sort of a home base for a trekking business. This lodge would actually be a one main hut with a couple of guest huts nearby. I would like to have energy at the main hut for backpackers and trekkers to power up their cameras, ipods, batteries, and computers, as well as possibly a few flourescent lights. Nothing too energy gouging . . . somewhere between 60 and 150 watts.
Seeing as how I would be off the grid, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should actually try to procure this energy? I suppose the easiest method would be to get a small, one gallon gas-powered generator, but the noise, hassle of getting gasoline, and turn-off ...

I am trying to decide between Canon 7D/5DmkII and Nikon D300s/D700. One thing i am wondering, how weatherproof are these cameras as i want to take shots in the rain and in boats where it will get wet from spray. Or should i also buy a waterproof camera like Pentax optio w80/Olympus u tough 8000. Any advice on these would be greatly appreciated.
thanx in advance.

I am going away next year for 6 months to South America, New Zealand, Australia and Africa and not sure what to do about taking a phone! Is it best to take a mobile, rely on skype, get a pay and go or use a phone card??? I keep getting lots of conflicting options and am now a little confused!
Thanks
