This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.
The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

Well, I did it. After much deliberation I bought a DSLR camera for my upcoming trip to Australia. And by "upcoming" I mean about a year from now.
Anyway, it is the Pentax K7. I was torn between that and the D90. I like the K7 because it seems more rugged and the video has an 1/8" mini jack for audio in case I want to shoot video at any point. Also B&H has a deal where you get $100 rebate for the K7 kit plus an additional $100 for each pentax lens. I got the kit plus a 55-200 zoom and I get $200 back. Next thing is a Domke camera bag and a fast wide angle prime lens and that will be my kit.
The only real gripe I have with prosumer DSLRs having the HD video option is that people are starting to complain that their chip is overheating and it isnt recording as long as it says it will. Also I hear the K7 performs poor with higher ISOs.
Anyone else have a K7? What do y...

I've been debating whether to invest in one of these or not:
http://www.earthtechproducts.com/solargorilla-solar-charger.html
For the money and the weight, I'm rather tentative, but I'll be doing a lot of blogging/photo editing along the way (1 year trip) and wanted to see if anyone had some personal experiences with this product.
Thanks in advance,
Wes

Hi all,
I searched the forum and couldn't find an answer to this, so am hoping you can help out. Heading out in about a month in some travels and want to capture it on video and embed video in blog so as to share with interested parties. I'm thinking about buying a Flip video camera to capture the fun.
Problem is, I am not planning on taking a laptop or netbook with me, and want to update blog and upload video in Internet cafes along the way. From what I gather, the Flip requires you use a computer that has Flip software installed on it. Is this true? If so, I am guessing I won't be able to use the Flip as I'd hoped.
OR, is there a way I can just plug the Flip USB into a random internet-connected computer I find along the way and upload straight to YouTube? I don't figure I am going to be editing much, if at all. Just basic pointing, shooting, sharing.
Thanks for your thou...

I'm going for a 3 month backpacking trip to Europe trip next year and have a couple of electronics related questions. I'll be going by train and staying in hostels. I'm from Canada.
1. Do I take my cell phone with me? I wouldn't be making calls back to Canada with it but I'm thinking for emergencies. I think the costs would be huge because of the roaming right? So it wouldnt matter if it was a local call because it's still a Canadian phone. So I'm not sure about this.
2. I'm buying a point and shoot camera. Should I buy one that takes those square lithium batteries that are rechargable or one that takes AA batteries and take the NIMH batteries and the recharger for it. What will work best for my situation.
3. I have a Zune Mp3 player. How do I recharge it? It only comes with a cable that I plug into my USB port on my computer and I'm not planning on taking my lapto...

My husband and I are planning a year long trip. We will be traveling through South America, China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Middle East, Egypt, and Morocco. I speak French and Spanish, but was worried about the language barrier in Asia and the Middle East.
From experience, are electronic translators helpful or should I save my money?

As a travel and tech junkie, I heart my iphone. I've been traveling around using it for 3 months now....took it Europe and Thailand.
Here are the best 11 apps I could find that really help you out when you travel:

Some people added some in the comments too. I'm particularly interested in the wikime app.
What are you favorites?

Hello,
I want to advice the iSayHello language courses for iPhone or iPod Touch!
I used them while travelling across Europe and for me they have been very helpful.
They are not a dictionary more a talking travel help, because they have all important phrases inculded and it really helps a lot to hear how to pronounce Polish, Italian or Spanish.
you can find the of course in the AppStore or you can have a look on isayhello.mobi
Thanks to the developers - it makes traveling easier!
Enjoy

GPS...to have or not to have
I do some trekking but it's easy trekking. Lots and lots of day hikes. Teahouse to TH or Guesthouse to GH are fun for me...a week or less,
If it involves camping then I get guides/porters. I don't like to get lost in a jungle or on a mountain and I don't like to carry anything...close to nothing I carry.
I've only recently added a camera to my pack and am in the final process of picking out and buying a netbook. Just replaced my altimeter and compass with a casio pathfinder watch.
I'm a miser on space and weight but am considering a GPS.
For what reason I ask myself?

I have lots of problems with Firefox because it crashes on certain sites (such as the New York times if I am logged in and a comment box is on the same page (but not if I am not logged in or if there is no comment box) as well as the German weekly zeit.de and other "harmless" sites). I've tried uninstalling and installing it again, downgrading to an earlier version, nothing helps, it keeps crashing on certain sites.
The Internet Explorer doesn't crash as often, it still crashes more than it should but considerably less than firefox, but it is really slow and cumbersome, so I thought I'll try Opera instead.
However, when I start Opera, the IE opens instead, shows "http://%22c/Program%20Files/Opera/opera.exe%22" in the address bar and tells me it "cannot display the webpage" ?!
I've tried restarting, uninstalling and installing Opera again, but to no avail. Whenever I start O...

I have a compact, easy-to-use camera, and I'm looking for something a little higher end. I don't care that much about videos or face recognition (won't be taking many photos of people). I'm looking for the highest picture quality I can get with at least a 10x zoom, and it would be nice if it could work in lower light conditions. My price range is around $300-500 USD and it seems like most of the super-zooms in that range have debatable image quality (based on reading reviews). Any suggestions? I'm currently looking at the Canon Powershot SX20IS and Panasonic Lumix.
