Travel Tech FAQ and resources

This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.

The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)

There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

iPod Touch - how useful is it

Hi All

I've been looking for a travel-friendly e-book reader for travelling, mostly so that I can swop my heavy stack of guide books for LP e-books instead, and so far it looks like ipod Touch (Not the phone version) is going to be the one for me.

It probably has loads of other uses for travellers though, and I'd like to know what the great applications for travellers are - what applications have you discovered that are really worth while ?

I figure it's probably good on bi-lingual dictionaries, language learning, maps, skype calls, journal ?, reminders of flight, bus departures, ?

Is this true? What else ? What do you use yours for ? And do I need to buy the mega-capacity version to fit all this stuff on?

Thanks!

Didne

iTunes indexing problem

My brother recently set up a new hard drive in my laptop and yesterday I was installing some software, including the latest iTunes (version 9). Unfortunately the external hard drive I use for backing up the laptop was connected and iTunes indexed the music on that as well as what is on the laptop hard drive. Now every single song in my music collection is unnecessarily indexed twice, and I can't figure out how to undo it. Uninstalling iTunes and re-installing it with the external drive unplugged did not work.

Any suggestions? This is not causing any problems, it's just massively annoying and I would like to fix it if possible. Thanks.

iPod Touch or 160GB Classic in Asia

I'm off to Asia travelling for a year with my partner, who is taking her 16GB iPod Nao with her. I've been intending to get an iPod Classic 160GB, so that I've got all of our music (about 55GB currently), room for plenty more and movies. However, I've recently been swayed by getting a 64GB Touch and the ability to have wifi, guidebooks and the odd handy app. I guess I'd like to know several things to try and help make up my mind:

1. If I want to have a few handy traveller-friendly apps on the Touch and be able to put a few movies on, how much room am I actually likely to have for music?
2. Is intermittent wifi worth having if there are plenty of internet cafes around? While there might be plenty of wifi hotspots in the more developed parts of countries, I assume it's going to be pretty scarce in a lot of places.
3. Does getting a rather more flashy-looking Touch out somewhere mar... more »

Android phones

Hi - who is using an Android phone when traveling? Thinking of switching my primary travel phone from an iPhone to a HTC Hero. But I am wondering if anyone likes the Motorola Droid better than the HTC Hero.

advice on DVD (?) player purchase

Greetings! I'm new and hope this question's not been covered recently; I found something related from 2003 in my search.

I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a product (available in the U.S.) along the following lines:

A DVD player (or whatever!) that can play as many films as possible without needing to be recharged due to 20+ hour flights. (This is to keep a restless child entertained, and I want to control content -- not just rely on what the airline may provide.)

Kid-friendly-sized screen (that is, bigger than the palm of your hand, if possible). Does not have to be great visual quality (or sound quality), though.

Preferably not much larger than a standard hardback book??

Open to purchasing a second battery if needed. Do have layover of a few hours in Amsterdam. I guess could consider trying to recharge there in airport (is that likely doable?) if I g... more »

Camera Needed

Can you give me a link to 'Camera Review' sites? This is my last attempt to learn how to take brilliant travel photos. I intend doing yet another night school course and buying a top end digital. I am not worried about camera size/ numbers of lens, etc. I have been advised to do the course before buying a camera - but I would like to do a school session and then come home and practise that lesson.

If you care to offer advise re;camera and tripod I would be very grateful.

BTW. I am not being lazy - I have already done considerable confusing research.

Lonely planet on Kindle

Hi all,

Ive noticed that Lonely Planet now have all their titles available for Kindle and was wondering if anyone had tried these out. Im thinking of buying an ereader and a Kindle wouldnt be my first choice, but this could swing it if the format works well. So, has anyone tried them out? How well does the format work? Are the maps useable? Is it easy to search? Any advice on this welcome.

Thanks.

another one needing camera advice..

Hey!
i'm going to central and south america soon and in desperate need of a good camera..
I am not an expert so i will be brief regarding my needs..:

1. True to life colours. my old one sucked in that department...
2.waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and crushproof (if it's not too much to ask)
3. the ability to take pictures in low-lit places without using the flash, and without it coming out blury and useless..
4. it's important that it will be able to last for many pictures without having to charge the batteries.
5. it should be as small and thin as possible, so it won't draw alot of attention in risky areas and such.

thank you in advance for any help!

Dana

Help

I just turned on my computer to find that my 5 year old has wiped the drive. Everything is back to factory settings, office is gone, all my photos are gone, all my files (that I need right now) are gone.

Is there anyway to undo this? It's a Macbookpro.

Sending a gift online while you're away

I travel a lot and often end up missing a lot of special occassions, much to the annoyance of my family who I owe a LOT of xmas presents to. Anyway, I got an email from a mate a few weeks ago telling me about a site that lets you send monetary gifts and video etc when you're away. Was wondering if anyone else had heard about it or had any experience with it/ has anything to say? Is the sending money bit secure? Any advice or anyone who knows of a similar service they have used- all comments welcome. The address is www(dot)boonspace(dot)com.

Which LENS???

Hey guys.
Leaving with a 40L backpack for a long RTW focusing a lot of nature. I just got myself the best compact on the market - a fully manual Canon S90 with a 28-105 mm zoom, and want to take my SLR as well for great quality shots. I am not exactly sure when i should use each camera.
I definitely would be pleased with a light package. I currently have the 28-135 IS Canon lens, the 17-50 2.8 Tamron and a 50mm 1.8 Canon. What should I take??? I am not sleeping at night.
I am thinking the 50 mm since the zoom range of the other ones are already covered with the S90, and quality mostly shows on closeup shots. Am I right?

This seems very cheap but as I am on a budget sounds really good. I however dont want to be scammed. If anyone has ever heard anything about them please let me know

Portable DVD player says "no disc" even with DVD in it!

It doesnt happen every time, but about 50% of the time when I put a disc into the machine I get a message saying "no disc." I usually take it out and put it back in a few times to make sure that everything is shut tightly, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. If it happened every single time I would think the machine was broken, but because it works half the time, I am puzzled.

I have a rented DVD that I put in there tonight and got that message. So, I took another DVD from my shelf, put it in there, and it started up right away. I thought maybe it had something to do with rented movies vs my own DVDs, but I have watched rented ones on there numerous times, so I dont think that's it, unless there is some type of strange code on them that my player does not like.

Has anyone else experienced this type of issue?
