Travel Tech FAQ and resources

This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.

The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)

There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

Playing media such as videos in Linux (Ubuntu).

My windows broke beyond repair so the only solution was a fresh install. Being bold, I opted for Linux (Ubuntu) instead of installing XP yet again. Ubuntu is great, except it doesn't play most videos I have. (but I do get a nifty preview picture which XP didn't do).

Apparently, this is for legal reasons, because many (most?) codecs/plugins/whatever required to play media such as movies is proprietary and because Linux is not it comes without those things, although they are sorely needed. I downloaded one such thing (sorry, don't remember the name) recommended on the help pages of Ubuntu. Now I do get sound - but still no picture in the video.

Is there one codec/plugin/whatever package that has them all and ? Note: Doesn't need to be legally bombproof.

On the other hand I remember the need to hunt for codecs on my old windows system too before it did actually play all vid... more »

cell phone for USA, Canada and Mexico

I am traveling to the States, mexico and Canada next year for a whole year, and looking to get a phone over there, but wondering if anyone new the best way to do this cheaply - what company to go with, and what sort of plan to get that will work for all 3 areas? i would also like to make the occasional call home to Australia...
Thanks

get rid of facebook zoo

I'm not exacty travelling at the moment, but some of you might remember me.
How the hell do I get rid of facebook zoo?
I've spent about 45 minutes on the website and can't see how to get rid of the f$%ker
Someone gave me a zoo for my birthday a couple of months ago, and every bloody time I log on ther are messages that there is a gift for me, or a keeper need,or a visitor raised me money.

I DO NOT SODDING CARE, I WANT THE THING GONE
how the hell do I make it go away, delete my zoo, nuke it, fuck it off, anything?
I don't care for facebook at the best of times, logging on to find who has a sore toe or who is eating an apple....

Simple step-by-step instructins required.
Thanks

Cheap Sim Cards SES Asia and Africa

Hi all,

I'm heading off in a few weeks to Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Phillipines, South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi for 7 months with my girlfriend. I was planning on buying a cheap phone in UK, having it unlocked then purchasing an international sim card. However, this looks like it would be far more expensive than getting a sim card for each country. I'm not too worried about changing my number regularly but wanted any advice on the ease and cost of getting sim cards in each of the countries I plan to visit.

My phone would be used mainly in emergencies, in particular to conact my girlfriend if we ever lose each other. The odd text to the UK and receiving incoming calls would also be handy, but I plan to mostly contact the UK through the internet and skype.

Many Thanks

S

Using a handheld projector on the plane

Quick question, its my first time flying so i'm not very familiar with plane rules and what not, but I picked up an aaxa p2 handheld projector and am not sure if I can use it on the plane. its about the size of my phone and I can pocket the device, but with all of the recent airplane security checks going on, I'm not sure if I can bring this on the plane with me to watch my own movies. Here's where I found it: gadling

Anyone have any ideas if they'll let me use it on the plane? It cost me a pretty penny and for some security guard to smash it is probably a waste.

Travel SLR Kit

Apologies if there is already a thread for this - I did a quick search and couldnt find anything

For all you SLR users out there, what's your typical travel SLR kit and why?

On most of my trips, I've gone with a Canon 20D, 17-40 f4 (landscapes, general walk around), 50 f1.4 (low light/portrait) and 70-300 f4.5-5.6 DO IS (for the wildlife shots I NEVER actually take :)

I've now got a shiny new 5d2 and I'm thinking of cutting back to just 2 lenses to save weight - the 25-105 f4 IS as my general walk around, and the 50mm for low light. What do you reckon?

Which Camera Advice Please

At long last I am switching to a digital camera. I need one that will survive in the field. So far I have three possibilities and I've read up on them and have nearly made my mind up but would appreciate any advice. The cameras are:

Olympus u(actually greek mu) TOUGH-6000

Panasonic Luminix FT1

Canon PowerShot D10

I think the Panasonic is the best buy as it has greater low light sensitivity and higher optical zoom. Do you agree? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Has anyone seen the iPhone app Wikitude? Looks awesome for travelling!

Heya all...I trust you're well!

Just wanted to find out if anyone has used the wikitude app on the iPhone?

I have recently seen this and it looks amazing so I wanted to see if anyone has given it a thorough working out!

The app itself lets you hold up your iPhone pointed in the direction of something ie. The leaning tower of PIsa, and then gives you a full description of what it is!

I think this is pretty damn good as you can be anywhere and get instant details of what you're looking at.

Anyone got any experience with this app?
