This is branch to talk travel tech - cameras, apps, platforms, mobile/cell phones, satellite phones, video cameras, mp3 players, e-book readers, recording equipment, anything you might want or need to enable or immortalise your travels.
The Travel Tech community will also often talk general tech, geeks that we are, so don't worry if you see posts about email applications, reboots and the latest drive or memory options. :-)
There's a chance that your question has already been answered somewhere on Thorn Tree, so please use the search function before you post a message. This post will stay at the top of the branch, so check the contents of this thread for links and info relevant to whatever you're interested in and feel free to add any useful resources you have found.

Hey
I am going abroad for school study, Im doing alot of photo journaling. Im doing two subjects, architecture (in which I want to take pictures of fine detail in ceilings, lintels, whole temples from the outside, up close pictures of details too) and then Im going to be in the Himalayas and hiking to the everest base camp in which I will want to take pictures of the mountains, villages, big scenes around me.
I want a decent camera, however I am a student, and I really would prefer, if I could, to keep my budget up to 300. If I have to Im willing to spend more though.
Just came across a cool travel accessory.. An umbrella! It can orient itself according to the direction of wind and rain and even has eye savers which can protect ur eyes. Thought I should shre it here. Maybe others could help me with some other travel gadgets as well!
Does anyone have any information on which Cental/South American countries have the best Internet connections? I'm not talking Internet cafes. I have a job that allows me to live anywhere in the world, but I require fairy high speed Internet access on my laptop as I'm on the net all day long.
Also, if you know of any good towns by the beach where I could get Internet access, that would be amazing!
Any comments are appreciated!

There have been a few instances of airline power adapters not working with in-seat power sources. How does it happen?

My computer is operating very slowly, so I pulled up task manager and found out that the CPU is 100% and I have about 70 "processes" running! I am only using the internet with one open site at a time so I don't know where all this other stuff is coming from. I ran a Virus and Spyware scan and they did not show my computer to be infected. Can anyone tell me what is going on here and if there is a way to get my CPU usage back to a lower, more manageable number?
Hi all,
I'm planning a several-month trip to South America and I'm in the market for a digital camera. I've never owned a digital camera and I'm notvery discriminating when it comes to picture quality - basically I want a decent camera that takes snapshots of people, places, and things that I come across. I won't be taking any landscape shots. So I have a few questions:
What can I get by with for my purposes? I've been looking at some recommended "budget" cameras that go for $150-200, and they run from 8-12 MP. Some of my friends have blackberrys that take decent-looking (to me) pictures with a 2 MP camera. How many MP do I need to take decent photos? Are there other technical considerations that I should pay attention to? I don't have a huge budget and I know that its possible that my camera will be lost, stolen, or broken during my travels, so I would like to keep my camera ex...

I had to shift my iTunes library to a new drive as it was full. I had a library of 120G, about 20,000 tracks, which has obviously taken me a considerable amount of time to build. I followed the 'how to' on the iTunes support website to a tee. However, since I moved it to a new drive it sounds dreadful - tracks are full of clicks, bumps and ticks. There's not a problem with the new hard drive as other stuff I've added to my library since the transfer works fine and has no glitches. It's just the music I originally moved. I've installed the latest version of iTunes, yet this has made no difference.
Anybody have any ideas of how I can remedy this problem? The poor sound quality is driving me mad. I put a ridiculous amount of time and effort into building my library and editing my tracks, and now I can't even bear to listen to it!

Why is my googlevideo and Youtube so damn slow?
hi everyone,
i live in chiang mai, thailand with my girlfriend. she is thai and i am american. we are both 27 years old. anyways, we are getting bored. she works as a tour guide at the royal palace and i am an exporter of silk. we are planning on a trip around the world for as long as we can. i have about $10K USD saved up and she has maybe a few hundred USD! i have traveled around SEA extensively so i know the general costs associated with this part of the world.
my question is this: i have two semi-professional cameras. one canon 40D and one canon 7D with good, quality lenses. the pictures that our cameras take are phenomenal. my plan is to try to sell our photographs on the internet as well as keep a blog. we are going to travel as long as we can on the money that we make from our photographs. has anyone done this before or thought of it? our monthly budget for both of us is...

Questions: 1. Do all and any laptop modems (USB mobile type) need to be reconfigured when moving from one country to another, or do some reconfigure automatically?
2. What does reconfiguration involve?

We'll be bringing a small netbook with us for our 3.5 week trip to Alaska via Hawaii this June. I understand we'll have wi-fi in many of the places we'll be staying but I was looking into the possibility of getting wi-fi through a cellphone network via a USB 'dongle' that plugs into the laptop. I gather prepaid wireless broadband is fairly new in the US but there are some providers who do offer it. I found a list comparing the various providers at the link below.
http://www.prepaid-wireless-guide.com/prepaid-wireless-broadband-plans.html
I've had a look at the coverage maps for the networks used by these providers and it seems Verizon does cover most of Alaska but Sprint does not. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct?
For some reason the providers using Sprint seem to be cheaper than those using Verizon or T-Mobile in terms of the one-off start up costs (for the USB...

I have some film in my freezer that I am trying to clear out. I tend to run a roll a month on average - I do static images only and really thought out.
1) With digital people tend to play around with the exposure and then post process the file. If I use a digital camera like slide film, if I just nail the exposure and let shadows be black and let highlights be white. Is this a huge disadvantage to me?
2) I have shot some images on slide film - low light cityscapes. I have done the same with my dSLR which was HDR processed. I am just about to process my slides. For low light building cityscapes has digital nailed the coffin? I find that with a one image off my dSLR that the colors can be a bit muted and a shadow over the buildings. If I did a HDR (tone mapping) image it looks more pumped up.

Today I received the email saying my application for a Cambodia e-Visa had been accepted. Document said it was a Firefox document, but when I try to open it I get a page full of gobbledy-gook - all squiggly bits like some sort of code.
Son tried to help did something but Microsoft Word? I think it was won't open it either, neither will Adobe Reader. Son reckons it was 'corrupted', but I remember this sort of thing happened ages ago with another document. (Think it was either Jetstar or Europcar? I have sent an email to the Cambodia e-Visa department, but I've an idea I'll encounter the same problem if/when they resend it. (This happened with Jetstar/Europcar).
What should I do?
Thanks.

I'm doing some digital asset management now, and want to find the best slide-show software possible to present some photos. in the past I've only used simple slide show presentations such as the ones available on Adobe Bridge, or Windows photo gallery but they're very basic and not what i need.
I'm trialing a few other programs right now - Pro Show Gold is one of them (recommended by someone on Nikonians), but the photos look very pixelated in the trial version and i don't want to buy unless I'm sure the quality is better than what the trial revealed.
Another is Pictures to Exe Deluxe 6.0, which looks really good so far as well, but i can't find many reviews on it to find out what current users really think about it.
if anyone has some useful input on the topic, or other suggestions for good software, I'd appreciate hearing it.
