freediving course in East Africa

I'm looking for a freediving course (beginner level) / freediving teacher somewhere in East Africa (Tanzania / Mozambique). Do you have some ideas? Thanks a lot! :)

Prescription scuba mask question!

I'm considering doing a PADI course out of Cairns, and will need to rent a prescription mask since I'm incredibly nearsighted! Problem is, my eyes are pretty different (one is -8.25, the other -6, if that makes sense). I'm just wondering what size to rent to balance them out - I don't want to get a headache, but I'd also like to see reasonably well. Everything I've found online either assumes your prescription is similar for both eyes, or that you will be buying a mask that you can customize. Help!

Divemaster Destination

Hello Everyone,

I really really want to get my divemaster certification next year using my free March and April to my advantage. Right now, I'm contemplating between Malapascua (probably Threshers) and Mabul (probably Scuba Junkie). Both locations are very very appealing and I'm not sure where is the better choice.

Maybe a little background would help.. I fell in love with diving about a year ago, and will be doing my Rescue this summer. I'm in my early twenties and fun/social environments would be ideal. Malapascua seems super fun, but Mabul brings me close to Sipadan.

Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations? I would love to hear from someone with some sort of insight!

Diving Philippines - El Nido and Coron

Hi all,

Hoping someone can give me some suggestions here - I'm hoping to do a dive safari from El Nido to Coron, or vice versa, for around 3 or 4 nights but since I'll be travelling alone I'm not sure if any of the operators around take single passengers of if I have to arrange a group. Can anyone recommend a dive group that could help me with this?

I've been to El Nido and Coron before (but didn't dive) so if there are other options (maybe Apo) which would suit a single traveller better I can be persuaded to change plans!

I'm looking at going over the Christmas period.

Thanks

Mozambique diving

HI All,
I'm considering visiting Mozambique. How good is the diving there in comparison to other regions ?
I hear mixed stuff about the place ? Is the diving better in SEA ? I'm into seeing the big stuff.
Has anyone dived madagascar ?

Froggies Bunaken

Hi
Thinking of going back to Bunaken after 10 years or so
I dived with froggies for 3 or 4 years or so but i hear it is under new ownership, Christiane retired I guess I am not surprised with
all those cigarettes and all.

So where is the best place on the island for diving now, for the best diving experience,
is Froggies still OK?
Or are there better options?

Chris

Kids learning to dive?

I have an 8 year old son who has said he would like to learn how to dive. My feeling is that he is too young, but a quick search on the internet indicates (at least) some places do teach kids this young. Since I don't dive I really have little idea about the risks involved and whether an 8 year old learning to dive is a reasonable idea or a bad one. I'd appreciate the opinions of others. If we did go ahead with it he would probably be 9 by the time we did it, and it would probably be somewhere like India (Andaman Islands) or Thailand (since we live in this area).

Carrying some diving equipment

Hey everyone,

Next summer im going to be working on a biosphere reserve protecting marine life and will be forced to travel with:

Fins
snorkel
mask
wetsuit

and a backpack with a lot of gear.

What is the best way to carry everything around? Please note that there will be a lot of traveling hence not just getting to one destination.

Would a simple mesh bag be best?

Thanks for your replies.

Floating comfort strap or GoPole Bobber?

Hi!

I recently purchased my GoPro 3 Silver and I wonder which product is most comfortable and best to use when diving with it. I'll either go for a floating comfort strap or the Go Pole Bobber. From your experience, what do you recommend? Is the Bobber designed for usage like scuba diving or is it merely for snorkeling/water activity?

Thank you for any comment on this!

Looking for dive shop in Montreal or Online website for equipment *Help*

Hey everyone,

I am planning a three month trip to Mexico next summer to my dive master and I would like to invest in diving equipment but I obviously like everyone else want to find the best deals out there.

Is anyone familiar with an online website that offers affordable prices for equipment that would ship to Montreal?

If not, people who are familiar with the Montreal vicinity, could you please recommend a shop?

Thanks for your help!

James

How to carry your snorkel fin

Hi,

Now that I live in Indonesia, I plan to take many snorkel trips (I can't dive yet).
Because of my job, I have to travel some parts of Indonesia at least once a month.
If I am lucky, I get to visit some places close to snorkel sites and I try to take advantage of that.

So my question is specifically to people who bring their own fins.
Have you got any tip to carry your snorkel fin in a cabin bag? Any recommendation of the type of cabin bag you use?
Or would you use a separate snorkel bag and slung it over your shoulder?
In your experience, which is a better way to do this?

FYI, I am female, prefer to carry a little weight as possible, carry my laptop everywhere.

Thanks for reading this.

Snorkeling lembeh strait

We are going to North Sulawesi in September for a snorkeling holiday. Planning to stay on Bunaken, Siladen, Bangka and possibly lembeh islands. I have seen lots of comments that Lembeh strait is no good for snorkeling, but wonder if anyone has done it and could give me an idea of whether it is worth it or not. We were told Sipadan was no good for snorkeling and that turned out to be rubbish.
Any other tips for great places to snorkel in Sulawesi would be greatly appreciated as well.

Diving Bali with kids

Hi there. My 11 and 12 year old sons are certified divers who can go to 40 feet but have limited dive experience (one has 10 dives, one has 50.) We will be in Bali in August and we'd like your recommendation for dives with easy conditions, good viz, and shallow bottoms (ideally 40-60 feet.) Thanks!

Nusa Penida and Komodo, Kadidi

Hi!

I will be travelling for 7 weeks in Indonesia this summer. I already have a rough itinerary which I will stick to but I wonder, is it worth diving both in Nusa Penida (e.g staying on Lembongan at Blue corner) and later take a live-aboard around Komodo. I will be on Lembongan in early July so there is at least a chance to see the mola-mola.

If time permitted, I also plan to make stop on Kadidi (Togeans). Any recommendations if you want to look for Dugongs there?

Thanks
