Welcome to the branch that covers one of the most fascinating sports: scuba diving and – to a lesser extent – snorkeling. For those who always wondered what scuba diving actually stands for, it is the term used to describe the use of a “Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus” to stay underwater for periods of time greater than the average individual can breath-hold.

If you have more general questions such as accommodation you should also check the country/region related branches.

Hi all - Merry Christmas! I'm planning on a 1 month surfing sabbatical end Jan through late Feb 2010. I've never tried surfing but am a good swimmer and have previously done bodyboarding and wakeboarding so I think I'll be fine... ish.
Whilst I'm riding the waves, I'll also be interested in taking up the PADI Open Water certification. Why not :)
I'm currently based in Shanghai and am toying with the usual suspects eg. Hawaii, Bali. However, if anyone's got a better suggestion/itinerary for a beginner surfer & potential diver, for 3 weeks, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks! x

Hi! I'll be going to the Red Sea in January. I don't have any dive shops near me, so i am thinking about picking up a 7mm and some open heel fins when I get there. I don't want to buy these items online. Is it bettern to buy in Sharm or Dahab? Any recommendations for shops with reasonable prices and a good selection?
Thanks in advance for your time!

I see that someone else has had an unnerving experience with Frenchie's on Caye Caulker in Belize recently, and I'll second the concern. We recently went to the Blue Hole with them, which is a 130-foot deep dive, right at the limits of AOW, as I understand it. A number of the other divers were clearly not experienced enough to be doing the dive--a lot of thrashing around, coming up underneath or over other divers, etc. On the boat I was surprised to find that at least half of them (and actually, everyone I spoke with) didn't have their AOW, and a few of them hadn't been diving in a long time. It was a nice expedition, but considering Belize's inflated diving prices, we shouldn't be diving in groups of 12 with beginners.
So here's my question: Is there any way what Frenchie's is doing--taking OW divers down to 130 meters--is legit? It seems like a violation of basic safety to m...

Hello and thanks in advance for your help.
Does anyone have a suggestion regarding which of these two places I should stay? I do not know that I don't like muck diving, as I have not spent any time doing it, and I am mainly going because I want to cross Sipadan Island off the wish list.
I will spend the following week in Layang Layang. So if you have any pointers on what to see when traveling between the two, that would be great, as well.
Thanks again so very much.

Hello all,
I have a trip booked to Singapore for early March. After a few days there, I will have about two weeks to travel to Malaysia and dive in Borneo. Any advice on what dive site to choose would be much appreciated, as would any information regarding travel to, and between, the diving locations. Is it worth it to try to go to Sipadan AND Layang Layang in one two-week trip? If so, what is the best mode of travel between the two? What about Lankayan?
Also, if you have any thoughts on the best places to stay, please feel free to share that info as well and I will be forever grateful.
One last thing if you have the time.... what should I see in the cities I assume I will be pasing through along the way? Is one town preferred? Kota Kinabalu? Tawau? Kuala Lupor?
Thanks in advance very much for your time and kindness.
Help I need advice on where to go diving end of march/early april. Thought of some destinations but can't make up my mind. Is Bali ok for diving in this period? Read that it is still rainy season. We only have 12 days so don't want to travel that much. Just go to 1 or 2 relaxing lowkey beach resorts. Also thought of Bonaire, Curacao and Mexico.
Thanks

I am on my way to the South Pacific, most likely in April or May, for a 1-2 month Dive/snorkel/travel trip. My destinations have not been solidified but so far I'm thinking: Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, PNG and maybe the Solomon Islands for a one week live-abord dive trip. I have no budget restrictions. Can anyone make any suggestions for live-aboards for a 1 week dive trip? Where and why do you suggest where you have suggested? Anything I need to know or should know about diving in that part of the world? Are any of the places I mentioned so similar that i may eliminate some? If so, which? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I am staying in Tiberias (Israel) and have about one week to spent after New Year's Eve (Jan 6-13). I thought of heading south to Eilat by bus and then go to Dahab. My question: how about diving the wreck Thistlegorm and other dive sites: visibility, temperature (water), ...?
Thanks,
Wim

'm heading off to Sri Lanka in early April and want to get a day or two of diving in. I understand that the best place this time of year is in the south.
Does anybody have any specific recommendation as to a dive area/dive shop?
Would appreciate any advice

I know they lost their access to the sea, but think I remember seeing a report about some guys who dived in Titicaca lake... is there any option for diving in Bolivia? Would be quite a thrill at 4000m altitude.
