Welcome to the branch that covers one of the most fascinating sports: scuba diving and – to a lesser extent – snorkeling. For those who always wondered what scuba diving actually stands for, it is the term used to describe the use of a “Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus” to stay underwater for periods of time greater than the average individual can breath-hold.
*Please read this thread to find answers to the most common questions. *
If you have more general questions such as accommodation you should also check the country/region related branches.
Feel free to add generally interesting topics which have not been addressed yet; to make navigation easier on the FAQ, I recommend to start with a bold headline to allow people to find topics.

Help I need advice on where to go diving end of march/early april. Thought of some destinations but can't make up my mind. Is Bali ok for diving in this period? Read that it is still rainy season. We only have 12 days so don't want to travel that much. Just go to 1 or 2 relaxing lowkey beach resorts. Also thought of Bonaire, Curacao and Mexico.
Thanks

I am on my way to the South Pacific, most likely in April or May, for a 1-2 month Dive/snorkel/travel trip. My destinations have not been solidified but so far I'm thinking: Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, PNG and maybe the Solomon Islands for a one week live-abord dive trip. I have no budget restrictions. Can anyone make any suggestions for live-aboards for a 1 week dive trip? Where and why do you suggest where you have suggested? Anything I need to know or should know about diving in that part of the world? Are any of the places I mentioned so similar that i may eliminate some? If so, which? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I am staying in Tiberias (Israel) and have about one week to spent after New Year's Eve (Jan 6-13). I thought of heading south to Eilat by bus and then go to Dahab. My question: how about diving the wreck Thistlegorm and other dive sites: visibility, temperature (water), ...?
Thanks,
Wim

what other dive spots do you recommend? i'm an advanced diver interested in wall dives and/or large pelagics.

'm heading off to Sri Lanka in early April and want to get a day or two of diving in. I understand that the best place this time of year is in the south.
Does anybody have any specific recommendation as to a dive area/dive shop?
Would appreciate any advice

I know they lost their access to the sea, but think I remember seeing a report about some guys who dived in Titicaca lake... is there any option for diving in Bolivia? Would be quite a thrill at 4000m altitude.

Just finished a trip to Caye Caulker to get some diving. Went to Frenchies first after reading all the reviews and hearing some firsthand recommendations. Unfortunately we didn't go back.
Frenchies is on the main drag on the east side, so it's easy to find. Suits were torn up, frayed and regs/BCDs were old appearing. By itself, not a dealbreaker.
My GF couldn't get breathe easily off her reg and told the staff on the dock about it, but was told not to worry about it. No one bothered to take a breath off it.
It didn't work any better in the choppy water, and the divemaster was annoyed. She had to use her secondary. So much for Frenchies. Overall attitude: condescending and indifferent.
Next day we visited Belize Diving Services. Office is on the quieter west side of the island (meaning about 500 yds). Much newer equipment, plus you get a dive computer, whic...

I just looked into divin the Maldives since I'm going to be in southern india in a while, but from what I saw it's basically an extremely expensive destination! Does anyone have any experience diving there?? Is it possible to find backpacker accomodation and cheaper diving companies??
Thanks!

I worked in Egypt in 2003 and used to spend long weekends in Dahab. Now I have a chance to go back there for a week or two in January. Has it changed very much in that time? I remember...
1. Too many hotels, but still some corners of normal life, and not-in-tourism people were happy to play backgrammon with me. Still true?
2. You could walk about 20 minutes out of the centre of town, and you were beyond Dahab... the occasional hotel, but more empty space than hotels.
3. Diving cost 25 USD per dive if you haggled, including equipment.
4. The Islands and Canyon were easily the best dives, although blue hole and eel garden were good.
5. Lighthouse was full of people doing a try-out dive - it's a good reef for that, but the crowds did mean that there was a noticable amount of trash floating around.
6. You could stay in a "camp" hotel with a fan and reasonably clean sheet...

So, I am going on a Big Trip (also my honeymoon) next summer in July/August and as well as a bit of safari and beach time I'd like to do some good diving. My other half is not a diver and although he doesn't mind me disappearing off to dive (and sometimes comes with on the boat) I need somewhere with good diving but also good beaches.
We are currently looking at three options for the beach/diving bit of the trip - any views on these or good alternatives very welcome!
(1) Pemba (Zanzibar not Mozambique) - based in SW of island. I have heard mixed reviews of diving here including (a) it's fantastic and has lots of big fish and (b) the currents are very strong and there aren't any big fish!
(2) Mafia, Tanzania - Chole Bay. Supposedly to be amazing diving but haven't heard good reports about the beaches (or lack of, rather), and don't want a sulky husband!
(3) Vamizi, Quiri...
