On Your Bike

I'm going to cycling in Baja Mexico for a month this winter that will involve a chunk of camping. It's been a while since I've camped while cycle touring. Does anyone have tips to keep your bikes safe overnight outside of the tent?
I am preparing a four-week bicycle ride in the Western Cape of South Africa. The ride would be with panniers; overnight accommodation would be in backpacker’s places, B&Bs and hotels. Daily distances would be between 50 and 90 km.
I would be most grateful for any comments/suggestions/views from anybody who has cycled in South Africa. I am particularly interested in comments on safety, the suitability/dangers of riding on national roads, and also in towns, especially Cape Town.
Do you know any web site where you can find good road maps that can be printed out for free?
Would like to cycle this May 2014. I understand there is/has been much construction on highway. Would 28mm tires on a road bike be ok or is something wider needed.
I am going to Gran Canaria in January.
I will be racing on a road bike in Summer and would like to get some training in.
Can anyone recommend some training camps over there, especially in Playa del Ingles, where I am staying?
Thanks in advance,
i've been cycling a few times from Vientiane south in route 13.
Just to say that there is a small beautifull road going from Thakhek all the way to Savannakhet!
First time i see it! Often along the Mekhong, very very quiet,it's smoother than route 13 and shorter: 117 km.
I realize that some of you with light bikes and minimal gear can fly with just 20kg. But I can't and trust me, I have tried. Is there a website out there that one can search by total baggage weight?
Am starting to find some cheap european airlines but on the Norwegian airlines site can't find the actual charge.
It'd only allow that once I logged in or bought a ticket.
Any ideas what excess bags are worth?
Copenhagen to Bangkok
After riding from Cai Ring to Hanoi , which wasn't pleasant at all, we're thinking about taking a train or bus to Lao Cai.
Or can you recommend a road which is not so busy? I hate those buses and trucks blowing horns.
Remember Bill wrote something on CGOAB, but he didn't mention the traffic.
How is the No. 2, later 70? Or the 32/32c?
Any help will be appreciated.
Currently on our bike tour in Vietnam, we are deciding whether to apply for the Thai visa in Hanoi or in Vientianne.
Who knows about the processing time and cost in Hanoi? ( Vientianne is one day and 1000 Baht/25€, and they don't ask for onward ticket,( which we don't have), somebody posted). Pnomh Pen last year was big hassle, took four days, had to print out my bank account balance.
I am looking to do a cycling trip for 4 months or more starting July or August 2014. It would have to be done fairly cheaply such as camping etc to keep costs down .I am wondering if anyone else is looking to do a cycling trip around then and is looking for a riding companion?
At the moment my idea is uk to Asia until the money runs out but I would love to hear other people plans and ideas to.
After travelling a lot in asian countries ( mostly by bicycle) we are really annoyed by the countless "Hellos" in Vietnam. Okay, some are friendly, others are just normal. But a lot of them seem really unfriendly, aggressive to us, when people are shouting even from the inside of a house, or yelling in a loud, nasty voice.
We always thought that in Asian countries children are taught to show always respect towards elder people, but this is definitely not the kind of a respectful behaviour. Must be a lack of education, both in school and parents house.
So, how to deal with it? Practising kind of Buddhist patience? Trying to ignore them? Getting angry about it?
10 a day would be nice, I even would answer to them. But there are hundreds ( haven't counted them yet).
We are keen about your opinions.
Am looking at some good deals from Europe to Bishkek for next year but am unable to understand their baggage regulations.
Their site states 2 kinds of economy where the lowest (Comfort, freeze and Promo brands) gets 23 kg while the next economy class ( Status brand fares) gets 2X23kg.
Am looking at skyscanner and orbitz, but both just state "economy" class
Anybody use them lately?
