Most of the other branches have a 'sticky' FAQ post that always appears at the top of the branch (e.g. UK and Ireland, Shoestring, Phones, cameras and computers)
Now given that there are a few regulars in here who know what they're talking about in regards to long haul travel and also that there's been mor...

I'm thinking about ways to work abroad and seeing as I've an honour degree in Events Management and have managed and organised a series of different events in the UK I was wondering if there's scope for foreigners to work in this area in Asia?
Does anyone know anything about it or have any information, contacts or websites I can look at. Not sure where to start or whether it's even feasible.
Any insights, input or information welcome.
Thanks.

Hello!
I would love to hear from any parents who have worked abroad teaching ESL with children in tow.
I have my MA, applied to begin my PhD in the fall and in the meantime am beginning my TESOL program here in Northern California. My plan is to find a job teaching ESL part time over next summer or even spending the fall semester abroad so I can enroll my children in a local school (I am a single mom). My daughters are 14yo and 9yo and are relatively well-traveled (Africa, Central America).
I am completely open to where I would be teaching/working but would love to hear positive and negative feedback about what places would be easiest for my children and I.
Thank you in advance!

I am seriously thinking about going to live in Iran. Anyone done this? Difficult? Any tips? There does not seem to be anything online and I have spent a week looking. Just need a little help before I approach the consulate. Thanks, p

After a recent visit to Thailand I fell in love with the place and its people. Got speaking to the owner of a guest house in Khon Kaen who told me that English teachers with TEFL qualifications earn a minimum of 30,000 baht a month.
That to me seems decent money, would sustain me no problem (was living like a king - eating out three times a day, staying at decent places and drinking every night for less than that a month) so if living there and not travelling around I imagine costs would be lower. I might even be able to save money for future travels.
I don't have any qualifications yet but would happily do the TEFL course required (or buy a fake one in Khosam Road...just joking!).
So need your opinions and advice, from people who have taught english both in foreign countries and specifically Thailand.
Is it worth it?
Did you enjoy it?
Is it difficult? (I wouldn't say I'...

Hi,
I am working in Zambia for the moment and am earning cash $ US.
I don't know how much longer I'll be here for, so it is not worth getting a Zambian bank account. My girlfriend does have a Zambian account though.
Somehow I want to get a few thousand dollars into my bank account in Belgium without paying lots of bank fees, charges, etc.
What is the best/cheapest way to get cash $ into my Belgian € account?
My girlfriend is going to the UK for 2 weeks, so I could give here my dollars, but then she needs to change into UK pounds in order to put into her bank account. And then transfer the money to my Euro bank account. Think this way I'll lose quite a bit on exchange rates and bank charges? $ to £ to € !
Any advice?
Thanks

Hi,
I've done a TT search and can't really find what I am after. I am an aussie who would like to work half a ski season in Canada, starting in January 2010. There is heaps on information out there on working a ski season - if you can start at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately I can't get there until January. So far the agencies (CCUSA, IEP, OWH, Global Work Travel) have said they only take people into their programs to start in Nov/Dec, and the resorts I have contacted directly so far have said the same. (I am not a qualified instructor BTW)
1. Any advice on how to get a job mid-season?
2. Has anyone done a January start before?
3. How easy is it to just turn up and find a job mid-season?
4. Any advice on where to go?
Really appreciate any guidance....!

Greetings:
My wife and I love Country and Western music. Can anyone recommend any stations in the UK that play this music exclusively and that stream on the Internet free (we live in Saudi Arabia)? If you can’t recommend any, please feel free to recommend any other radio stations in Great Britain on the Internet you enjoy. Any information provided is greatly appreciated.

Hello All,
I need to send a few larger luggage items from LAX area to Auckland, New Zealand before or when I get on my flight. The airlines don't seem to allow this due to TSA restrictions and I can't find any private air freight cargos options. Anyone have tips for me?
Thanks!

I am a NZer about to head to England to live for 2-4 years.
I have recently been away for a year and had full expensive travel insurance for the year.
I am thinking I will get travel insurance for 10 days to cover my one way trip back to UK and a side trip to Portugal and then get a small domestic contents insurance for my stuff whilst living in the UK ie laptop, DSLR camera, ipod, bits and pieces. I have a right to abode visa so have access to full healthcare in the UK. I plan to get travel insurance each time I go out of the UK for the specific period.
Is there any reason why the above wont work ie anything I havent thought of.?
Thanks so much

After many years overseas (yaaay), I've just moved back to the US (hmmmm...) and need to get health insurance (boooo...). I'd love some tips and suggestions from anyone who's been in a similar situation or knows more about the system than I do - I'm a bit boggled by all the info and choices online now.
I'll be working part-time (probably as self-employed, so no insurance through work) and will also be going back to college (part-time and then full-time I hope). Any suggestions for decent health insurance that won't cost me an arm, a leg and a kidney? It'd be great to have some wellness/preventative options (annual exams, girly check-ups, screenings, etc) instead of just emergency stuff, but I may be asking for too much...And I'm sure that dental would be waaay too much to ask for , but why not try anyway? :)
Thanks for any ideas, will also post on the US and Health branches...

Morning all,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, couldn't find an exact overland forum and this one kinda matches, so here I am :)
The wife and I are going to be moving to Ecuador (currently living in the UK). We are intending to drive our 1980 VW camper van all the way with a year stop over in Australia.
So onto the question.
The carnet deposit / insurance is based on the value of the vehicle. Is this value just what we tell the RAC (UK Issuer of carnets), or do they go on the purchase documents? The purchase price was £4500.
From what I have read, the carnet deposit is a multiplier of this.
If they go on the purchase documents, can I sell the vehicle to my wife for £100, reducing the cost of the carnet deposit?

I've found a website that shows available jobs at US, UK, Aus, and Canadian embassies across the world. The page links to the employment pages for the various embassies and it's FREE. Enjoy!

Hello people on the Thorn Tree,
ATM, I am doing some research on the long haul and I'm hoping that you guys can help me. It is my understanding that many of you are expats, and have a career that is 'portable'- a career that allows one to work anywhere and a career that pays enough to live comfortably. A life of luxery is not what I am after. There is no need for mansions, beemers, guard dogs and gated gardens. Rather, I want a life that's simple and comfortable- not flashy. Maybe it's my inner anthropologist talking, but I would like to get to know the locals, not live in a little Canadian bubble with my expat friends. My style of travelling is slow. I want to get to know a culture, stay for a few years, before moving on. Also, I don't want to be in school for the next decade trying to attain this. Thus, I am in search of a career that would allow me to do all that.
