The Long Haul - Living & Working Abroad FAQ

Most of the other branches have a 'sticky' FAQ post that always appears at the top of the branch (e.g. UK and Ireland, Shoestring, Phones, cameras and computers)

Now given that there are a few regulars in here who know what they're talking about in regards to long haul travel and also that there's been mor... more »

Australian tax - help needed!

Hello,

I have just started working in Asutralia on a WHV and I was asked to fill in a form to my recrutiment agency for details of pay. One of the sections was about superannuation and my other friends on WHV have all had this sorted out by their companies however, my recruitment agent said I have to pick my superannuation fund myself!

As you can imagine I am a little overwhelmed by the choices and all I really want is one that I know I'll easily be able to get my money out of when I return to the UK. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

I have posted in both the Australia and Working abroad section of the forum.

Thanks

31 is too old. WTF?

Originally from Canada I turned 31 in July. For the past 5 years I've been teaching English in China, backpacking Australia, and currently am in New Zealand (just squeezed by the "under the age of 31 before when you apply for your WHV" criteria). Now that I've hit 31 it seems my options for working overseas are slim to none because I do not have a degree nor am I considered "skilled". I am not a nurse nor a doctor or an engineer. While I do love Canada, I hate Canadian winters and do not want to go through another one. I'm quite content with going home for the summer, working a patio season in a pub, save a few bucks and once autumn arrives, I'd like to VAMOOSH. Slight problem... where can I go now? I was hoping to head over to the UK and make some GBP-but, oh no-I'm 31.

Is 31 really too old to live and work overseas unless I have a profession?

A few years in Asia, want to import USA registered car

Import Taxes for US car?

I plan to remain in Asia for a number of years after my first teaching job in Korea. I am considering importing my car, which is registered in the USA. My shipper will ship into Busan, then I'lll drive to Seoul--at least that seems to one of the options open. I am free to import in other countries, if it makes economic sense.

Any English web sites which might give an indication of the import tax for a used automobile? If it is based on " value " of the car, who exactly establishes the value, and on what basis?

UK resident, extended travel in Schengen zone?

Hi All,

I'm a UK resident and I'm planning an extended trip to, well anywhere, but starting in Europe. I've only just started my research and have just found out about the Schengen zone. Up to now my plans have been to spend a year or more travelling around Europe. I will not need to work and will be able to provide proof that I can support myself during this time. Is the Schengen thing something I need to worry about? Will it scupper my plans before I've even started? And if so, is there anything legal I can do to get an extended stay?

Teaching english in AFRICA or PACIFIC ISLANDS

Hi everyone,

My title is a bit vague, but i'll make this short and simple. First off don't mind my punctuation, even if this is about teaching english. ;)

So i live in italy and have a dual American-Italian citizenship and passport. Id like to live and teach english either in Africa or somewhere in the Pacific. Im not looking to make goodles of money (obviously). Id like to know of any personal experiences in these two areas of the world for teaching. Even in RURAL areas. Actually, mainly in RURAL areas. Im looking into volunteer work, but i am still elaborating my beliefs in it. So teaching for a living in Africa or the Pacific is an open option. How is work availability? how is money, if any? life style?
Im going to look into daves cafe, and other job sites, but im asking about experiences and ideas from you guys on the practicability of doing this..

Thanks!
James

Looking to start a career abroad

Hi!

So here's my situation: I'm 24, living in Belgium, got a Masters degree in Political Science and just got back from travelling and volunteering in Asia for one year. Since I got back, about 3 months ago, I've been looking for jobs here but 1/ as everyone knows, it's not the best time to be unemployed with a Ma but no professional experience; 2/ the jobs that I would think I could get are really not the kind of jobs I want (call centers and so on).
Lately I've been thinking that I'd actually much rather work in Asia than here in Belgium / Europe, for several reasons. I'm not trying to escape anything, I have a great life here, but I just feel like moving to another country and starting a career there is stg I should do.
The thing is, I could probably get a job in Bangkok, Korea and so on teaching English, bartending, ... but if I do that, I have the feeling that I'd pretty muc... more »

The problem is we have accumulated quite a few things( Clothing, books ) we need to organise shipping back to Australia. Any suggestions of what good companies to use? I don’t mind air or ship. We are not in a hurry for the things, but I don’t want to spend too much. Also looking for door to door service. If anyone has used good shipping company they can recommend would be of GREAT help, Thanks

long term travel books/resources

Hello,

As I'm thinking about the option of long term travel, I'm doing some preliminary research. After searching on Amazon and Chapters Indigo, I haven't been able to find many books on the subject. The only book that I can find is Vegabonding: An Uncommon Guide To The Art of Long Term Travel by Rolf Potts. Has anyone read this book and would recommend it? Has anyone read any other books on the long haul or long term travel that they would recommend? Are there any websites out there (I have been to Transitions Abroad and have read a lot of it) regarding long term travel that you would recommend?

In the past, I have done a year at a college in Germany, but my language skills are English only. At the moment, I have the aforementioned college diploma and a year of University. I'm a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport. If that helps you narrow it down. And I'm 26, so... more »

Teaching English in Barcelona.

What's the teaching climate like in Barcelona right now? Is there a lot of work available or is the economic climate hitting the industry hard? - ie, are language schools closing and student numbers dropping?

I've been teaching in Japan for five years and student numbers in private language schools have dropped, recruiting went down too... but I'm planning a move to Spain next spring and am curious how easy it is to get work.

Thank you!

Please Help Me Out. Very confused boy

Hi everyone, I am a 19 year old from Adelaide, Australia. I have opportunities to start an apprenticeship to be an electrician, and I am a Trades Assistant at the moment earning an average of $1400 a week, which I know is so much money for my age with no qualifications, I am going away to work and will be earning around 2500 a week so I have an opportunity to begin a successful career and life here in Adelaide. I live at home with my mum and sister, and have an amazing girlfriend of 2 years who is still in school. The thing is, I'm not exactly satisfied or happy with the life I'm currently living, I do not enjoy my job, but I do like the money, I feel as though something I need to do is to travel and explore the world, making amazing memories and meeting interesting people and just living my life and enjoying it where as if I live my life the way most do (Study, Career, House, Mortgag... more »

Safest neighborhoods in the world...

I'm trying to find the safest places in the world to settle in. I tried looking up databases which was only giving me cities, so now I'm just trying to find out via word of mouth. I'm just looking for safe towns/villages/rural areas in general, it doesn't matter which country. The kind of neighborhood where you can be friends with your neighbors and trust them. Also, a country that is not repressive, where a single woman living on her own wouldn't have to worry.

How can I stay in Spain longer than 3 months?

I am currently planning a trip around the world, and eventually plan on landing in Spain. My goal is the take spanish courses at a language school, as well as take on a variety of spanish cultural lessons. I want to completely immerse myself in Spanish culture, without being cut-off in 90 days. I found out that it's not exactly possible anymore to simply jump the border and refresh your visa; you need a little more legal 'capital' these days to stick around. Does anyone have any knowledge or information on how I can go about making this work? This is something I have been passionately wanting to do for some time, and am slowly discovering the complications. I have heard the two options are student (which I technically am, but am not officially "studying abroad") or work visa. Is there a way to acquire one of these without actually MOVING there, but living and hopefully working there f... more »

worth reading if you're considering a digital-nomad lifestyle

Hi all -- in case you missed it, here's a worthwhile Q&A with Jeanne Dee, who does the soultravelers3 blog, in the NY Times, http://frugaltraveler.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/11/qa-with-jeanne-dee-the-nomadic-family-traveler/?ref=travel
The comments that follow the article show an interesting debate on the pros & cons of long-term family travel and "digital nomads." If you're interested in long-term family travel, I encourage you to join our LP Group, http://www.lonelyplanet.com/groups/long-term-family-travel ... would be great to get more networking going there!
