Most of the other branches have a 'sticky' FAQ post that always appears at the top of the branch (e.g. UK and Ireland, Shoestring, Phones, cameras and computers)
Now given that there are a few regulars in here who know what they're talking about in regards to long haul travel and also that there's been mor...

I've found a website that shows available jobs at US, UK, Aus, and Canadian embassies across the world. The page links to the employment pages for the various embassies and it's FREE. Enjoy!

Hello people on the Thorn Tree,
ATM, I am doing some research on the long haul and I'm hoping that you guys can help me. It is my understanding that many of you are expats, and have a career that is 'portable'- a career that allows one to work anywhere and a career that pays enough to live comfortably. A life of luxery is not what I am after. There is no need for mansions, beemers, guard dogs and gated gardens. Rather, I want a life that's simple and comfortable- not flashy. Maybe it's my inner anthropologist talking, but I would like to get to know the locals, not live in a little Canadian bubble with my expat friends. My style of travelling is slow. I want to get to know a culture, stay for a few years, before moving on. Also, I don't want to be in school for the next decade trying to attain this. Thus, I am in search of a career that would allow me to do all that.

Hello all,
I was wandering if anyone could help me.
Sorry if its a long one.
Im an Australian and my wife is Dutch - obv with a Dutch Passport. We have moved to Amsterdam after many years in Dubai where we met and later married. My work, an Austalian company, have allowed me to continue my job I was doing in Dubai, In EU as I am a Territory Manager of the EU anyhow - Dubai was half way so easy to home and back - but in a bad way now!
We landed in AMS October 1 - the following week, spoke to Immigration about a residency permit for me - with the wife as my sponsor. After sending us a load of papers, we filled them out, had our first appointment to be told the papers were wrong and given a new load.
Filled those out, made another appointment - to be told, yesterday they had again sent the wrong papers and we now need to make a new application. In this time, my 90 day ...

Hi guys,
I'm in the process of applying for an overseas internship through IAESTE Australia. They help secure (but don't guarantee) internship positions overseas in technical disciplines such as, in my case civil engineering, for university students studying those degrees. I'm looking at Spanish speaking destinations but am open to anything/anywhere.
Just wondering if anyone has dealt with IAESTE before or knows someone who has or even better has been on a placement.
Thanks in advance!
Jarryd

Greetings:
My wife loves to listen to Dr. Laura Schlessinger on the radio when we are on vacation in North America. However, in Saudi Arabia, we simply can’t hear her broadcasts at all. Does anyone know where we can listen to her complete broadcasts, three hours in duration, on the Internet? Any information given is greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,
I am new here, so hello! :)
Myself and husband are both Australian, in our early 30s, and heartily sick of living in Australia. We are both gypsies in heart, have travelled around AU, taken a few holiday trips to Asia and NZ, but it's just not enough... we've been nurturing a dream of moving to Europe, and living somewhere there (while taking holidays to all the neighbouring countries, of course!). The very tricky question is "where to go?", and this is my question here... I've been doing a mammoth amount of research, but would love some ideas or feedback from people who have done it!
We are not looking to go for another 2 years, for financial reasons, saving up money for this and so on. However we are talking about it a lot, and thinking it's a good idea to settle on something NOW and start learning the language. :)
Our work situation is interesting, to say t...

Hi There,
I just wondered if anyone could help me out on a little career advice working in India.
I've worked in the Finance industry in the UK for over 4 years in several positions, as and IFA consultant, Underwriter and general insurance sales. I've also passed a series of UK finance exams, meaning I am now a fully certified financial planner in the UK.
I have a lot of travel experience and am now considering moving to India to live, work and travel.
So a few questions from me:
Any helpful websites I could use to look for work?
What kind of salary and bonus could I expect working as a financial advisor or other common jobs in Indian finance industry?
What kind of positions are available and what is the competition like getting a position?
Are there any industry recognized qualifications I would need to pass to stand a chance of getting a good position in India?

We are launching a new website aimed at promoting destinations, accommodation, transport and tours in Africa. The development of the website is nearing completion and we require writers throughout Africa (about 1 per country) to contribute to content.
Brief Job Outline:
Typically the writer will populate content for the country, or countries, they are responsible for, from broad country content, to specific destination content. On a granular level, this requires sourcing and seeding of accommodation on offer, tours available and transport options. These entities are added on lite packages. We will market to these entities, offering a paid subscription pro package. Commission is earned from the upgrade from the free lite package to the paid pro package.
The role requires elements of:
copywriting prowess
Basic SEO
Commercial drive
Web power-user status
Basic HTML
Africa t...

The company I am currently working for is closing one of the plants in December. My manager has taken a permanent position with one of our sister companies in Calgary Canada and wants me to work with him for 3 months setting up a new department. He seems pretty confident that all I need is a passport and no work visa. I can't seem to get answers on payroll taxes, social security, income taxes, etc... and how will all that effect me once I get back home in the US with the IRS and Canadian taxes. Hope this makes sense to someone out there that may know? please help I am supposed to leave in January.

I am a currently practicing (hospital setting) Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's in Nursing.
I would like to live abroad for at least one full year starting around August/September, 2010.
My first idea was Doctors without Borders. They accept Registered Nurses and are obviously an established non-profit organization that actually does pay their nurses. But it's not possible because I am married and will not leave my spouse behind, and Doctors without Borders never allows spouses.
We currently reside in the USA and have traveled extensively.
We would like to live in either Central or South America, preferably somewhere that we can become fluent in Spanish. We both have beginners-to-intermediate Spanish skills now.
We do have some money saved so are not looking for anything high-paying. We simply want an established organization where I won't have to invent the work ...

How easy is it to find Spanish to English translation work.
I will have an OK Humanities degree and speak fluent Spanish in a few years (cos Im studying it ).
Im prepared to go anywhere in the world and to do a post grad qualification (MA or chartered institiute of linguistics or a foreign equivilent).
I dont expect to find anything too exiting or glamorous. Just freelance and enough to get by on.

Hello,
I have just started working in Asutralia on a WHV and I was asked to fill in a form to my recrutiment agency for details of pay. One of the sections was about superannuation and my other friends on WHV have all had this sorted out by their companies however, my recruitment agent said I have to pick my superannuation fund myself!
As you can imagine I am a little overwhelmed by the choices and all I really want is one that I know I'll easily be able to get my money out of when I return to the UK. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?
I have posted in both the Australia and Working abroad section of the forum.
Thanks
