Schengen Visa

19 year old son and mates are planning on 5 months around Europe, (fully self funded) but this Schengen Visa thing has us confused. Have read enough blogs but still don't understand. Can they travel around west Europe for 90 days, then go to the UK for a week, then come back to Europe for another 60 days?? It says stay 90 days within 180. Does your stay start anew if you go to the UK?? Or does it mean no one can travel around Europe for more than 3 months anymore?? Will post this under Germany as well.

2 Nights in Loire Valley

Hi All,

My boyfriend and I are looking to explore the Loire Valley for a few days this summer. We'll be coming from Paris, and we have two nights to spend in the area before heading back to Paris. We'd love to do as much biking as possible, and see some of the beautiful chateaus. We're also hoping to do more of a 'self-guided' adventure, rather than joining a group bike tour.

I'm unfamiliar with the area, and I'd love suggestions as to the following:
1. Are there any 'must-sees' - considering there seem to be endless possibilities in terms of chateaus, gardens, vineyards, etc.
2. Is it better to pick one location to base ourselves (and leave our luggage) and then do day bike trips from that location? OR bike from one place to the next, while arranging for someone to transfer our luggage.
3. If we chose a 'home base' what would the best place to plant ourselves be, in terms... more »

Aix en Provence - Arles - Avignion where to go for 2-4 days form Cadenet

Hello - in July I will be in Cadenet for a week and would then like to add a few days in another town near Cadenet.
I am considering Arles or Aix en Provence or Avignion. Can anyone advice me where it is best to spend a few days
in the summer time? I just like to see a new town, maybe if possible rent a bike for a day to go to the countryside.
Which town would be nice to see? Many thanks for tips and information.

Corsica Train

Which direction of Corsica's train ride is more impressive: Ajaccio-Bastia or Bastia-Ajaccio?

Birthday surprise on Corsica

Hi everyone,

My family and I are going to Corsica this summer to celebrate my mother-in-law and her husband's 60thbirthday. Their children want to give them a special gift during this holiday - something special to do on Corsica.
They have both been to Corsica quite a few times, the love bikeriding (have climbed all the mountains there), outdorsy people. It could be something to do as a group - 10 people, or something just for the two of them.
Any good ideas? Our budget is 900 Euro!

Looking forward to reading some suggestions ;-)

Thanks,
Eva

Longish cycle

OK, tent bought, return journey booked (Bike Express), now all that remains is to get on my bike and cycle from Calais to Marseilles in September. I have given myself 4 weeks to do it so I won't be rushing! (Mind you I hope to take in Mont Ventoux on the way)!! Does anyone have any tips/suggestions of any sort that might make the journey as enjoyable as I can make it? (Places to see/stay on the way etc. etc.).
Also any suggestions of reasonably priced places to stay for a few nights in or very near Marseilles where my bike could also be kept safely (reasonably priced to me means 50euros or less).
Thanks

Eurail in France

I arrive in CDG Paris at 7 on a Sunday morning and need to be in Marseille by late afternoon at the latest. I am going to purchase a Eurail pass (France-Switzerland 5 days, 2 months).

My question is; would it be possible to validate my eurail pass, make a reservation and get on the train that same day. Or should i make a reservation online before hand?

The only problem with making a reservation is that I don't know what time I will be ready to leave the airport as I am coming from Australia via Malaysia so there could be delays and also can't predict how long customs might take.

Thank you, Rosa

Optimal subway / RER pass in Paris

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out what the most cost-efficient way of tooling around Paris is going to be for a brief trip. I'll be arriving on a Wednesday morning and leaving again on the following Friday morning. Aside from my initial trip in from CDG, I'll be staying within zones 1-3 for the entirety of the trip.

As far as I can tell from my research, the cheapest way to do this would be to buy the €9.50 one-way from CDG to the center and then buy the two-day Paris Visite Pass for zones 1-3 or a 10-trip Carnet depending on how many trips I'll be using. Buying the zone 1-5 Paris Visite Pass would cost significantly more than either option.

So here's my question for those in the know: can you buy the zones 1-3 Visite Pass and pay a (hopefully less than €9.50) surcharge when you come in on the RER from zone 5?

Merci beaucoup,

France by train or car?

We are travelling in France for 16 days in August (2 adults and 2 kids (ages 13 and 7). We are wondering if we should rent a car or take the train to see France. We have modified a bit a two week itinerary that takes you from North Atlantic Coast to the Mediteranean. Hoping to leave Paris visit Normandy, then Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux , Carcassonne. Pont Gard and end up in Marseille. What is best bet for using time efficiently and cost? thanks for any tips

Hotel Aix en Provence near the TGV

Hi ... can you recommend a hotel near the TGV station in Aix en Provence?
Would like something 3 star-ish. Or maybe 4 star.
