Ferry from Monemvassia to Kissamos

gtp.gr shows a weekly (Friday) overnight ferry from Monemvassia to Kissamos in the summer, but everyone talks only about the one from Gythios (Thursday). Does the Monemvassia ferry exist? gtp.gr notes "not officially approved" for both, although I remember reading in this forum somewhere that it's just a formality and should not be taken seriously. Your experience? When will the booking function come up if the ferries do exist?

We'll be traveling in July in Peloponnes and Crete. Do we need to reserve hotels in advance? It's high season, so we should; but there are fewer tourists these days (so we read), so we don't need to. Your advice.

Many thanks!

2 week Road Trip in Crete in September

Hello!

So after doing a bit of research we've decided to go to Crete for 2 weeks in September as I read Crete is one of the warmest of the islands in September and still relatively in season (I hope I've got that right!).
But we don't want to sit around too much and one like to see what the Island has to offer. Therefore we thought about renting a car and driving around a few towns, and would like to know if any one has any itineraries they would recommend, or just towns that are worth visiting?

We are planning on flying into Heraklion, picking up the car, and taking it from there. Will love beaches and harbours but also like cute little villages off the beaten track.
Also, would it be better to drive around for just a week and spend the other week chilling in one particular recommended place, or would it better just spreading the 2 weeks out around Crete?

Thanks in advan... more »

continental greece or the islands

hi everyone,

this a tough question and I still have a problem deciding where to go in Greece for 15 days in mid-June.
at first, I wanted to do continental greece because I was thinking it would be a little more varied and I could have a similar atmosphere on parts of the continent and on the islands. in the mountains and by the sea of course.

I also fear the most interesting islands will be full of tourists and I'm allergic to that.
and ferries may take a long time to go places. and when you don't have a car on the ferry, how can you escape the crowds ?
the final point is that I'm not too interested in beaches at all. small ports and villages by the sea, yes ! bathing, not really.

but I'm also thinking greek islands all have different feels, some may not be touristy at all...

so this thread is more like a poll :

for 15 days in Greece, would you focus on the continent... more »

3-5 days on Crete

I'm going to be traveling in Turkey but have a few days before a meeting in Istanbul. Was thinking of flying from Istanbul to Athens and on to Crete. Any suggestions what to see or do on Crete?? would consider the Gorge but looking for suggestions on how to approach this--not into big tour group. Any advice will be appreciated--this will be in mid August so have figured islands too crowded to try to include Santorini. Have been to Athens and Mykonos way back in the 70's.

3 days in Santorini in May 2013

We are arriving in Santorini late at night on 22nd of May to leave on the 25 to another island.

Could you please recommend places to stay to make best out of three days in the island?

Looking for an authentic place with good views. Our budget is somewhat midrange, but would consider to pay a bit more if it's worth for the special occasion of our honeymoon as well as my 40th birthday. The other two islands we would visit are Milos and Naxos.

Any thoughts will be highly appreciated. Thanks !

Which Greek Island?

Hi all,

I’ve decided to spend the whole warm season on a greek island, now the only question is which one :) and i was hoping the experienced people here could give me some advice based on what i’m looking for. So here it is:

1. Peaceful. that’s the number one priority. I’d like my days and nights there to be as peaceful as tranquil as possible. I enjoy writing and introspection, and don’t want to hear the boom of the base of techno into the night (actually don’t want to hear it anytime:) or to be kept up by loud bars and parties (yes, i do like to party sometimes, but not by machine noise coming out of aggressive sound systems, i prefer more gentle and harmonious instruments to make music).
also regarding peaceful - i’d like to find a place where you don’t hear the roar of traffic and especially not motorbike engines. any suggestions for an island that is not riddled with th... more »

Itinerary

We desperately need advice as to where to go to in Greece now in June:
Would like to go to: Athens - number of days? visit Delphi?
Visit some islands: not sure where to go to. Crete, Rhodes - some swimming?
We would like to go to popular and not such popular islands.
Last year we traveled to Turkey and enjoyed touring old sites, we are middle aged parents with a 6 year old flying into Athens from South Africa. Time period in Greece 3 weeks max travelling on a strict budget.

Public Hospital in Fira, Santorini?

Hi everyone, I recently received medical treatment at the small public hospital in Fira, Santorini. I need the address of this hospital, for insurance purposes, but can't for the life of me find it online! Does anyone know the address of this hospital? I believe it is the only hospital in Fira.

Many thanks in advance!

Solo Island Hopping in June - Good/Bad Idea?

Hey All,

I'm taking a solo 3-week trip through the Eastern Mediterranean from mid June to early July, and I don't have much of an agenda yet. All I know is that I'll be in Istanbul from June 16th - June 19th and will finish off in Rome around July 6th.

I plan to travel East to West and want to be in Croatia around June 24th, so I can spend the last ~2 weeks in Croatia/Italy. I have some questions:

1. Does it make sense to get from Turkey to Italy through the Greek Islands? I was thinking something like Istanbul -> Bodrun -> Greek Isles -> Athens -> Italy
2. Is the area area solo backpacker-friendly, or it more of a big-group party/holiday sort of place?
3. Does anyone have any good hostel recommendations on the islands, or are they all expensive and more hotel-like?
4. Is it worth spending 5 days in the Greek Islands, or is my time better spent in Turkey and/or Croatia?... more »

Day Trips from Thessaloniki in Late May

I'm going to Thessaloniki in late May. I'm looking to rent a car and take a trip to some cool beach towns 1.5 to 2 hrs away.

People have been suggesting places in Halkidiki, but it's tough to know which places are better than others.

Can someone help me out?

CYCLADES ISLANDS ITINERARY ADVICE for end of MAY 2013

Hi,

I am posting this new thread following on my earlier question what islands to visit during our trip at the end of may. We are a couple from Istanbul, Turkey. Thanks to a suggestion from my earlier post we decided to go down south of Torkey and take the ferry across to islands instead of flying to Athens and taking the ferry from there. Much more affordable that way\ although we'll be loosing some time during many ferry rides.

We have been to Greece before but it will be our first time in the islands. We love to have variety of things to do and to see. We will be in our honeymoon!

Thanks to some ideas I was able to check ferry lines to come up with an itinerary. Unfortunately the ferry schedule gives us more time in santorini and only 2 days each in other two islands. I have been using danea.gr and http://ankertravel.forth-crs.gr/english/npgres.exe?PM=BB to check the ferr... more »
