8-10 Italy Itinerary Please Help!

Hello,
I will be working in Lugano, Switzerland from June 19-22. I then fly out of Rome on July 2nd, leaving me about 10 days/9 nights to make my way down. I would like to spend about 3 nights in Rome, which leaves me with 6 nights to fill elsewhere. I would like to do a coastal town, either the CT or Amalfi, and then I was thinking either Florence/Venice/Tuscany for the other 3 nights (not in that order obviously). I understand that any more than 3 regions is too much, so I am looking at about 3 nights per locale. My situation is 33 years old, single male, looking for a well-balanced first visit to Italy comprised of culture/history/city/nightlife (Rome), landscape beauty (CT or Amalfi), and then a taste of the small town, local lifestyle (Tuscany/Florence?)

Comments and suggestions welcome!

Thank you!

Food/wine in South Tyrol ?

Hello!
I would be grateful for sharing experience and recommendations about good restaurants and tavernas in Bolzano and surrounds like Merano, Terlano, Gargazzone, Renon (Ritten). Also in Trento. Interested in tasting local food and wines in authentic atmosphere. :-))
Thanks to everybody!

Italy in December?

Hello everyone. Has anyone been to Italy in December, around Christmas? We're thinking of hitting the highlights -- Rome, Venice, Florence, etc. for about a week.

What is the weather like in December? Prices? Are there a lot of hotels closed during this time?

Thank you.

Castelmezzano or Pietrapertosa

We will arrive in Castelmezzano or Pietrapertosa on July 4th (mid-week) and might not have a reservation. The Volo dell'Angelo won't be functioning on either of the two days we are there. Will we have trouble finding a room right smack in one of those two lovely villages if we just show up with our fingers crossed?

Thanks!

Trenitalia - No Confirmation

Hello,

Does anyone have advice about how to get confirmation numbers from Trenitalia?

I booked tickets for two trips within Italy in early June, from Rome to Florence and from Florence to Venice. In each case, my credit card has been charged, but I never received confirmation from Trenitalia. According to the website, I was supposed to receive confirmation that included an electronic ticket and a reservaton number.

I do have "retrieval codes" for both reservations. I probably made a mistake in not registering on the Trenitalia site when I made the reservations; I registered after the fact, but I can't access any information.

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

biking mount vesuvius

Hi all!

I've been looking for info on biking the Mt. Vesuvius as a day trip, without much success. Anyone done it?

I know there is a company offering guided trips, but we'd prefer to do it without guiding. Preferably on some trail with mountain bikes, not only roads. We also need to rent bikes. Any information is very welcome!

Thanks

Guided easy/medium day excursion on Mount Etna the first week of June 2013

we will be in Sicily from May 29 to June 6 2013. On June 3rd we plan on driving from Taormina up to Rifugio Sapienza on Mount Etna. I'm trying to figure out what is the best (in terms of scenery, views, and experiencing the volcano in general) excursion. Something easy/medium probably, in terms of hiking skills and length - a half a day hike would be ideal - we are committing the whole day to Mt Etna but don't want to be hiking all day necessarily.

I understand that you can drive up to Rifugio Sapienza, correct? We'll have a rental car. From there, I understand you can purchase a Euro 60,50 return funicular + offroad (bus?) up to 2500m (funicular) and 2900m (with the offroad). At that point, what are the options? Thinking of a nice, not too strenuous hike from there. With or without a guide.

I also seem to understand we can also purchase a 60,50 Euro ticket for the funicular+of... more »

Val d'Aosta - walking, and food/wine?

Hoping to do a short trip in Val d'Aosta in July.

I was thinking of doing the Valgrisenche-Valsavarenche section of the AV2 (Gran Paradiso) - this would presumably be three nights, right, if we arrive from Aosta by bus?

And after that a two-night section starting or ending in Gressoney, also accessible by bus from Aosta.

The idea is to get some varied walking in unspoilt areas, with good food and wine. Refuges or other places that are particularly good in this respect would be appreciated.

I've done a little walking before around Cogne. We could include a night at the Vittorio Sella is it works out.

Matera or Alberobello in Southern Italy?

We only have time to visit one of these places - Alberobello for the Trulli Houses or Matera for the Sassi cave houses. Which would you do? Has anyone been to one or both and which would you recommend?

Some background info - We are travelling as a family with 2 kids (6,9) and will have spent 18 days in Turkey including staying in a cave hotel in Goreme prior to arriving in Italy.

Cinque Terre trail updates

Hi,

I am looking to go to Cinque Terre in September this year. Does anyone know the current status of the trails. I know there was a land slide a couple of years ago. I want to make sure that all of the trails are now open

Thanks

Trains from Ancona to Rome, and Croatia ferry advice

Hi TT friends,

Need to get back to Rome around June 21-22 from Croatia. We're looking into ferries: either Jadrolinija running Dubrovnik - Bari or Blue Line (to save money) from Split - Ancona, both overnight trips. Would love insights if anyone's done these routes and your feedback. The price difference is quite great: For an inside 2-berth cabin with wash basin/basic amenities, it's 188 Euro for 2 of us on Jad vs. 90 Euro on Blue Line. ?? What's the inside scoop?

One big catch: Can't seem to find Ancona - Roma Termini trains on Trenitalia's website, which we've used a bunch and have booked tickets through as recently as the other day. ??? Anyone know what's going on here? I've done a Google search and found plenty of people talking about Ancona - Roma trains but honestly, only one at 6:30am comes up on Trenitalia, and it has the asterisk meaning it leaves next day, and besides... more »

Sardinia Somebody must have been there!

We have a month here in July and have most places booked except the last few days from Alghero down to Cagliari. We want to be close to the beach. Just basic accomodation is fine, we have a rental car and thought a couple of nights before we fly out just relaxing would be great. But finding somewhere isn't easy and Sardinia seems to have less replies to questions than anywhere else we have been in the last 15 years or so.
If you have been there, loved where you stayed or know of somebody else who has been we would be delighted to hear from them. We haven't booked yet on La Maddelena? probably foolish but hope the one we want may have a cancellation before July.
So come on let us know what you loved there is it all too commercial and high end, surely not. maybe a great little restaurant in Alghero of a little pension halfway down the coast. Anyone, we would love to hear f... more »

Help with trip planning please - Florence, Bologna, Venice(Murano)

Hello everyone

I've not been to Italy before but want to plan a trip in the autumn time to take in the following:

1) Florence City Centre (for art galleries and the normal tourist things)
2) Bologna (for the Ducati factory tour - my bf is a motorbike fanatic)
3) Venice/Murano (I'm a glass bead maker, so the glass is an attraction!)

I need help to plan this itinerary. I have no idea if there is a logical order to do these three places in, and whether it's feasible to travel between them by train.

If we were to go by train, where would be the best place in each city to look for hotels, to minimise the difficulties of train travel, but still be relatively close to where we need to be in each city?

Also, in total, we will have about 4 or 5 days to spend on this trip - is it feasible to do say 2 days in Florence, 2 in Venice, 1 in Bologna? I know Lambourghini are also ... more »

Anyone in Venice between 23/5 - 29/5

Hi!

I'm going to be in Venice between 23/5 - 29/5 and thought it might be nice to see if anyone else will be there to perhaps do some sightseeing with.

I'm planning on wondering round the city, soak up the atmosphere, enjoy food etc. but also go on day trips to Murano & maybe Lido. If anyone's around and interested in meeting up let me know.

Kelly
