12 days in greece

Hi,

I am planning a 12 day trip to greece with my husband in October. I will reach Athens on 1st and leave on 13th from Athens. I want to go to probably one island for 2-3 days and rest of the days covering a few places in the mainland. Nafplio, Delphi and Meteora are the places i don't want to miss other than Athens. For island i am thinking Santorini....but i am a bit confused...should i avoid santorini and stick to the mainland covering a city or two more or is there any other island that i can go to not very far from the mainland. Will i be missing a lot if i choose not to go to Santorini?

Also i would like to know the best option for travelling in the mainland? I am not really enthusiastic about going to places in organised tours as it doesn't give much flexibility.Still if anyone has had a very good experience touring like that plz share the website of that operator and t... more »

used books in athens (english)

I have been traveling for four months and have acquired some quality english paperbacks. I was expecting to pass them on in Athens but the Compendium Bookstore has not survived the economic devastation. I know I can just leave them in my hotel but I would prefer they be in circulation. I am not looking to sell, just to find them a "good home".

I did check out the flea market but it did not appear as if that is where folks would go looking for something to read,

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hosios loukas and Daphni

Hello,
I'm planning 5 days in Athens next September. I have some questions:
1. What is the condition of Daphne monastery? It's still all in scaffolds?
2. How do I get to Hosios loukas monastery? I know it's on the way to Delphi but I didn’t found any public transportaion. I saw on the web one organized tour for Delphi + Hosios Loukas but it was very expensive..
Thanks a lot for your help

Limited time in Greece

On gap year (i.e. 19yo) and planning on stopping over in Greece for max. 7 days (I know, not long at all).
My friend and I, who both have a strong desire to see some night life as well as beautiful beaches and classic white greek homes, were considering Ios and Santorini as our 2 stops overs; purely because I have noticed that it is impractical and near impossible to go from Athens to 3 islands in under 10 days and enjoy yourself.

So, does anyone have any suggestions on Santorini or Ios / any recommendations to other Islands preferably in the Cyclades / activities to do ?

Thank you

What to do on mainland Greece?

Hi folks,

I'm on parental leave with my girlfriend and our 11 months old son. So far we spent 4 great weeks on Corfu, Greek Easter with the family in Lamia and 2,5 weeks on the pelion peninnsula. We hired a car so we are flexible.

But we still have approx 3-4 weeks left before heading back to Germany. And we are completely lost what to do.

We are flying out from Thessaloniki, so we think to stay a week or so there. Kalambaka and the Meteora region should also be worth a stop. My girlfiend and the boy don't like the windy roads so I think we are not going to the Zogarachoria region.

What about Metsovo, Ioannina? Worth to stay around? Anything between Metsovo and Thessaloniki?

We would like to see some real Greece not the classical touristy places. A nice Kafenion, historical architecture, beautiful villages, that kind of stuff. As we have the kid we can't go hiking. Howe... more »

Piraeus, Sifnos, Milos with Sea Jets

Please don't yell at me, I know I'm packing too much in too little time here but it is off topic and I have my reasons (believe me, I do have my reasons:)

I am going to book ferry tickets with Sea Jets for early June :
Piraeus - Sifnos on Thu 06 Jun : 07:00-9:10 SEA JETS SUPERJET
Sifnos-Milos on Fri 07 Jun : 09:15-09:50 SEA JETS SUPERJET
Milos-Piraeus on Sat 08 Jun : 19:35-22:30 SEA JETS SUPERJET

I would like to know if Sea Jets is a reliable company. their vessels are small and fast so in case of bad sea, they're the first to be canceled. I added an extra day in case one trip is canceled but I couldn't afford 2 cancelations in a row :/

do you think I should be more careful in my planning (considering it's early June and considering the type of vessel) ?

Thank you very much for your help :)

ferry from Santorini to Crete during October!

Hi,

I would be travelling with my husband (I'm 26) from Santorini to Crete Tuesday October the 8th 2013 but I can't find a ferry that would travel during that day. Is it possible?
I've searched on Hellenic Seaways and Seajets. Do you have any ideas?
thanks!

Ana

Walking in Meteora

Hiking in Meteora is slightly difficult as many footpaths only exist on maps anymore but cannot be found or are completely overgrown whereas others only lead to the bottom of climbing routes. We explored the area for 4 days using a copy of an old german map we bought from a little shop in Kastraki selling wooden toys. It is on the street to the center on the left side and a large copy of the map is displayed outside on a billboard. We found several really good walking opportunities we would like to share.
The pathes are occasionally very steep and rocky and might require a bit of easy climbing so this is not a flipflop thing. There is an abundance of snakes around anyway so boots should be the option. I would recommend walking sticks as well. We carried our 1 yo daughter with us which was at times a bit strenous because of low hanging branches but not really a problem. Nevertheless ... more »

Islands for sporty activities?

Hello,
My partner and I are planning a two week trip in late June/early July. We are both keen hikers/divers/kayakers, so are thinking of going to the islands.

1. Are there any islands that you would recommend for diving and/or kayaking? We would prefer to rent kayaks, rather than go with tours.

2. I realize that we'll be travelling in high season, unfortunately. Are there any trails where the hiking might not be so crowded?

We are hoping to visit two to three islands, based on where we can get the best combination of these activities.

Thank you for your help!

From Thessaloniki to Kalampaka

Hello.

Does any one have experience with traveling between Thessaloniki to Kalampaka? Myself and a friend are planing to do the stretch on sunday the secon of June. I have read that there used to be trains, but are there still any? Otherwise Buss i would assume, would it be a problem (like less possibility) to do the stretch since it is a sunday?

Would be thankful for an answer, but it will probably work itself out anyway, just looking for som sort of tip on what to do really!

Ferry from Monemvassia to Kissamos

gtp.gr shows a weekly (Friday) overnight ferry from Monemvassia to Kissamos in the summer, but everyone talks only about the one from Gythios (Thursday). Does the Monemvassia ferry exist? gtp.gr notes "not officially approved" for both, although I remember reading in this forum somewhere that it's just a formality and should not be taken seriously. Your experience? When will the booking function come up if the ferries do exist?

We'll be traveling in July in Peloponnes and Crete. Do we need to reserve hotels in advance? It's high season, so we should; but there are fewer tourists these days (so we read), so we don't need to. Your advice.

Many thanks!
