train travel pre book or on the day of travel. which is cheaper

Hi,
Will be using the train in Austria and would like to know if its cheaper to prebook a seat. Does it cost more to select a seat. In ireland when you book your name appears overhead the seat selected on the train carridge. How many days in advance would you have to book? And if you book from A to B on a certain day, would you have to travel on a assigned time. Again in this country if you wanna travel at another time outside of the time you booked then you pay 10euro extra. Of course now your booked seat will not be available, so you may end up standing all of the journey.
Mant thanks in advance for your help with this,

Schengen Overstay Question

I'm an EU citizen, but my EU passport has expired and I don't have any other form of ID. Since I also have an American one, I'll be travelling to Austria, and it looks like I'll be there for just barely longer than 90 days. Would things work out smoothly, if they stop me, if I can prove my EU citizenship with my expired passport? For all they would know, I'm an American overstaying.
Is anyone familiar with this?
Thanks!

Emerald Pool, the Alps

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to Austria and was browsing around when I found this spectacular picture of the Emerald Pool in the Austrian part of the Alps (link to the photo below).

I've been trying to find out how to get there, but so far I've got nothing.

If anyone has any information on this, please let me know.

Thanks a bunch!

4 Nights in Vienna - What to do?

I'm spending 4 nights in vienna as part of an 8 week holiday though europe and the middle east. I like the 'idea' of vienna, but don't really have a list of 'things to see' there. I was thinking of a day trip on the train to bratislava, but i'd love ideas as to have to fill a couple of days in vienna.

(34 year old kiwi bloke travelling by myself, I like museums, but i rush through them, i like photogenic buildings and a bit o history, keen on walking and natural beauty as well)

Daytrips from Thiersee - suggestions?

Hi, we are a family of four persons, planning to stay by Thiersee for four -five nights in the second half of August. Will have a rental car. Would like to have some suggestions for day trips from there. Interested in historical towns/villages and nice scenery spots esp in Alps, including some walking trails of 2 to 3 hour duration.

Please can you share your recommended toplist of destinations from Thiersee.

Any recommendations for self contained accommodation in Salzburg over Xmas
Need 3 bedrooms and close to city centre for 6 adults
Is it easy to drive to nearby ski resorts or best to get local transport as some of us would like to ski for a couple of days
What are best ski options?

6 Hour Stop Over in Viena on a Stag - recommendations?!

Hi all

I'm flying into Vienna next Friday on a stag trip and we have a six hour stop over from 12:00 to 18:00 before flying on to Croatia. So the questions are:

1. Is it feasible and sensible to leave the airport, head into town and go for lunch and beers?
2. Taxi or public transport?
3. Suggestions on location?
3. Any recommendations for a lively venue which will accomodate 10 guys with food and beers?

Thanks

D.

Driving from Prague to Salzburg....

In a couple weeks. Probably going to stay 2-3 days in Salzburg, then drive back to Prague. Just a few questions:

1)Do I really need the international driver's license? (I am an American).

2)Any suggestions on who to rent from in Prague? And should I pay ahead of time or wait until I get there for better deals?

3)Any suggestions on activities/things to see along the way?

4)Salzburg hotel/apartment suggestions?

5)Finally, how/where is a good place to park fairly cheaply?

Thanks!!

Austrian Adventure

I live in Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Alps and enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping, white water rafting as well as meeting new people.
If anyone would like to join in on any of these activities in the mountains let me know!

Wow, there is such an overwhelming number of fabulous theatres in Vienna. Would anyone have any recommendations for concert venues for dates 7/5 -11/5.

Hi there, i'd love to know if it's better to reserve seats on Vienna ( Westbahnhof ) to Budapest ( Keleti ) before leaving Australia. I will arrive there on 7/5 and travel to Budapest on 11/5 morning service.
I'd really appreciate any advice, thanks.

Mid May vacation in Austria

Hi,

My husband and I have our first vacation to Europe planned in mid May. We have already travelled quite a lot in India, US and South East Asia.

The countries I will be visiting are Austria and Italy.
I know I should've posted in a forum before finalising my itinerary and tickets, however, here I go at the last moment.

I will be flying to Vienna from Mumbai, India.
I have 4 days in Vienna, 2 in Salzburg and 2 in Innsbruck.

I have already booked my Hotels, flights and train tickets.
I am basically confused about our per day budget:
@ Food
Can you please tell me what should be our per day budget for food? do not seem to be able to figure out the costs. We do not plan to cook and would be having meals at local cafes with an occassional good dinner.
We do not drink, so the cost for alcohol is out :)

@Sightseeing
We plan to buy the Vienna card so that we can use th... more »
