Americas - United States of America

I figured out the financial side and plans and will now travel for +- 90 days through the USA. Plans have a bit changed from my previous one's, therefore a new topic.
Any ideas for a 28 day itinerary from NYC? The second part of my journey starts in San Diego , so let's first figure out the first one.
What are the nicest places/cities in the USA someone would add to their schedule for this cross-country trip?
I was thinking about a set-up as this:
New York (few days)
Philadelphia (few days)
Wrong decision to include Miami here? I thought also about Memphis/New Orleans/A... more »
Anyone tried cross US in Amtrak? How do it go?
We are travelling to California for 3 weeks in August and plan to hire an RV for two weeks to travel the national parks and head out to the Grand Canyon. Ideally we would have liked to camp but can't face shleping our gear from the UK. Any good tips for campsites that allow RVs in Yosemite/Redwood national park/Death Valley/Grand Canyon. the sites I've found don't seem too specific.
Alternatively, are there any good campsites in these parks where you can hire kit/tents?
This will be our small RV trip of a lifetime. We plan to leave sometime in April,2012 make our way south-west across the US to slowly go up the coast to Alaska and then thru the Yukon and across Canada. we are giving ourselves about 3 months.
We love our camper, bike a lot, have been reduced to shorter day -hikes due to knee problems, love nature, new foods, great scenery, drinks aound a fire and meeting new people. We are not shoppers nor will we want to spend too much time in cities (not going to LA)
If anyone has done a trip like this we would love to hear from you.
I realize there is a lot to see and do but we are looking for those little jewels we might not read about in the guides.

I am trying to plan a surprise birthday/late honeymoon present for my wife while we are home on leave in June. We will be in New York City for 4 days and staying at the Roosevelt hotel. She loves NYC and has been several times while I have never been. She has brought up in the past that she would love to take me there and always wants to go back. I am looking to completely surprise her with this and would really appreciate some romantic ideas and fun in general as well of things I could plan for her. She is very into music like Jazz and soft rock and we both love good food. She loves to travel and has been to many places so she is always up for something new. Any help would be appreciated.
Could those in the know just check my itinerary please?
We are a little limited to car sightseeing and short relaxed hikes due to health reasons - unable to hike more then 30min at a time due to a back condition and cannot hike more then about 2.5 hours max in day.
Day 1 AM leave Vegas to GC South Rim - overnight near South Rim
Day 2 GC South Rim then to Monument Valley for sunset and sunrise - overnight at Monument Valley
Day 3 Monument Valley to Bryce Canyon - overnight near Bryce Canyon (or 2 nights near Zion NP)
Day 4 Bryce Canyon and Zion NP - overnight near Zion NP
Day 5 Zion NP back to Vegas returning to Vegas about 5pm
Should I leave out Monument Valley or as we are not able to go on extended hikes - is this enough time? And no, I unfortunately don't have the luxury of extending this trip due to an international flight.

I was reading a book when i was a kid about steam paddlers on the Mississippi, and a race between 2 boats from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The story happened sometime between 1850 and 1900 as far as i remember and stated that quite a few ships run on ground or got stuck in the Mississippi during this time because the river changed it's way across the landscape quite often, particular after heavy rain upstream or floodings.
So my question is: Did they have steam ship races during this time on the Missisippi, and are there any beached steam ship wrecks left somewhere on the river that can be explored?
Not sure if this is a good place to search, but if anyone has any suggestions about a cottage to rent on Kauai please let me know.
Me and my friend are heading over to San fran within the next week. We are thinking to rent a car from San fran so we have more freedom to visit Yosemite, drive the big sur, go through LA, palm springs etc to end up in San Diego. We are finding it very hard to find an affordable place to rent from.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what companies to use or what to consider. We are willing to play around with locations of drop off. We are also planning to rent the car for about 10 days.
Any suggestions/info welcome
My bf and I will be attending wknd 2 of the Coachella music festival (Apr 20-22) and have 5 days in California to do some travelling before the show (Apr 14 - 19). A little perspective on who we are. Mid-twenty gay guys, not overly concerned about costs (but nothing extravagent... we'll probably stay in hostels), will have a car rental and like partying, chilling on the beach and meeting cool locals around our age.
We aren't necessarily interested in spending too much time in LA, but since our flight arrives at 11 AM, we will see some of the sights that Saturday (perhaps Hollywood or Santa Monica/Venice Beach) and stay over night, likely going out in Boystown in West Hollywood Saturday night.
Leave early afternoon on Sunday after checking out another area (maybe Beverly Hills/Mulholland Drive) and head to.....???!!! This is where I'm not certain. We are looki... more »
I'm trying to find a hotel in Las Vegas that has a nice, spacious pool to hang out at during the day but the choice of hotels and the different fees are confusing me. I like to know what I'm paying upfront without surprises :)
Some hotels state they have no resort fees, yet add on $100 for a daybed, another charges $20 for men to use the pool and not for women etc
So, do you have any recommendations that would fit these criteria:
-date of stay will be either 17th and 18th May or 18th and 19th May (depending on whether Tioga pass is open or if we have to go the long way round)
-budget per room and night $120 + tax (2 people)
-no additional fees to use the pool and regular deck chairs/chaise lounges (or is it common practice to charge for those?)
-no resort fees
-not bothered whether the hotel has a casino
-ideally walking distance to restaurants and bars

So as things stand, I will have a layover in NYC for the night. My plane lands at JFK at 7pm, and I have a scheduled Amtrak train ride from Penn station at 1pm the next day.
Bear with me on this, I'm thinking of not even booking a room for the night and just leave my bag at the Penn station security locker and just wander around the city. Do you think, that is wise to do? I do have concerns regarding safety at night. If I decide to do so, what do you recommend seeing and I'm well aware of the fact, that most attractions will be closed. I already checked and I will be too late to take a night round cruise around the Manhattan or take the night hop-on hop-off buss. So I don't have many ideas what to do...
Lastly I'm thinking of food I don't want to eat at some fast food restaurant, that I can find anywhere in the US, so I'm thinking of Katz's Deli or Isenberg sandwiches. Again, an... more »
I am visiting several places later this year and wanted to get some general hints and tips from people who have been there before. Specific points of interest would be food recommendations, especially vegetarian food, and definitely some tips for being as cheap as possible. I am going with 1 other person, and our budget is pretty reasonable, but obviously, if we can find out some very cheap things to do, and restaurants etc, then that will bring our daily average down! I know saying "budget" is a forum no-no, so I could say "recommend me restaurants for $5" but that might not be realistic, so consider my budget to be "as cheap as you know about and could recommend!".
Our itinerary is:
- July 22-24 - New York
- July 25-27 - Niagara Falls (return flight from NY)
- July 28-31 - back to New York
- July 31-August 27 - Florida (flying to Fort Lauderdale from NY), ...
Doing the above trip early to mid May in 28ft Camper Van, any tips please !
Also need to know best way to get from Newark to Fishermans Wharf with 2 big suitcases as Taxi will be quite expensive.
