LA at night

Hi,

I'm going to be in LA in the next few days and was wanting some advice on places to go at night.

We'll be staying in Hollywood area, although not in the centre of it, to the south east, near Melrose and Vine Sts, and we will have to get around on public transport or taxis if public transport doesn't run later into the night or gets unsafe?

But where can we go out for dinner and a drink after at a bar which is in quite a busy area with a lot of food choice?

Thanks for any help.

Albuquerque/Santa fe Camping loop?

My 6 year old daughter and I have 4 nights/3 days in this area. We can do a combination of hotels and camping (mainly camping, but campgrounds are first come, first served, so get there early on this busy weekend) and we want to definitely go to kasha-katuwe tent rocks and bandelier. We fly into ABQ around 6 and then I want to be in abq again to head south early on the 4th day. Just trying to figure out the best way and the other best places to go allowing enough time at these 2 places, keeping in mind it gets hot for hiking. For people who have been here, any advice? We want nice scenery and enjoy natural history, cities are ok but we will not focus on their activities on this trip. We will be in southern nm and arizona later on this trip and dont want too much time in the cr now. I was looking at the jemez springs, bandelier, and maybe lake cochiti campgrounds, has anyone bee... more »

Miami: 3 hours 50 minutes!

I have a three hour 50 min stopover in Miami before boarding a flight to Guatemala tomorrow.

I know it's pushing it fine but I think nearly 4 hours is a bit long to hang around the airport, especially after a 9 hour flight.

Do you think its risky to jump on the airport express bus to south beach? It takes 30 mins but don't really want to sit in the airport all that while! We wouldnt expect to do much, probably just get off the bus, have a thirty minute stroll and head back to the airport.

Any advice from anyone who has done this in the past/experience traffic in and out of Miami airport would be greatly appreciated!

Los Angeles Transit Experiance (safety)

Hi, I'm heading to LA and will be using the transit system to get around. My last experience taking the transit in the states was in Washington, DC and well, it was quite different than in Canada. So that questions I have are this:

  • In general, what is the transit system like in LA safety and comfort wise? Are there certain lines to avoid or modes (city bus, mono rails, etc)?

  • Secondly, I'm heading mainly to Nokia Theater/ Staples Center from the LAX... any tips I should know about?

  • And staying around that area.... any neighborhoods/areas not to walk through at night (or even the day?)?

Last time I drove through LA and found that like other American cites each neighborhood had its own distinct culture and experience. For example, one street would have higher graffiti and bars on every window while the next road would be tourists everywhere.

Any tips for happy trave... more »

How hot is it on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains?

If your'e planning on hiking up to Mt. Leconte in the Smoky Mountains, you won't find it as cool as normal. This past week's heat wave broke the all-time record on Mt. LeConte when the tems got up to 81.5 degrees.

Dublin Pre Clearance

I am flying via dublin to nyc from manchester on aer lingus. I have only just found out the plane will do the immigration pre clerance busines at dublin airport. It is flight e105 and not 109. The flight arrives at Dublin airport at 9am depart manchester at 8am (assuming that it takes off on time) and leaves for nyc at 10.45 am.

I am wondering if this will be enough time to clear both IRISH and U.S immigration. I am a eu citizen? Irish will be just a flash of a passport. U.S the full immigration procedure. Surely they wouldn't offer the flights in that combination if they thought it wasn't something that could be done?

Opnions welcome

Renting a car in Seward

Hello, I want to rent a car in Seward and take a day driving up to Anchorage. Is Hertz the only rental company I can go through or are there other ideas people have? I would appreciate any insights and insiders tips:)

Washington D.C.-Indiana

We're planning some family travel later this month. We'll spend the nights of July 16-18 in Washington D.C. and plan to spend the next several days driving back toward Fort Wayne, IN, planning to arrive on July 23. I'm trying to figure out where we should stop along the way. We're all adults, from 20-somethings to 70-somethings, and open to many different activities. Also, if there's anything we must do in D.C., besides the givens (Smithsonian, national monuments/memorials, etc.), let me know. Thanks for any help!

suggested day cruises along the coast of Maine

We will be camping in Acadia mid July and besides hiking and biking, we would like to take a morning or afternoon day cruise. We have a car so we're able to depart from points from out of Acadia, Bar Harbor or further points south on the coast.
I'm in the middle of researching all kinds of day cruising operations but would appreciate suggestions.
Thanks.
C.L.

Cruising the Blues Highway (Route 61)

I think it would be cool to cruise the Blues Highway (Route 61) from Beale Street in Memphis down to New Orleans. En route are blues clubs and the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. Of course this is where it all began for the Blues (and Rock n Roll came from Blues). Has anyone done this and really experienced it? What was it like?

Trip report from Mt St Helens

Just to let you all know that the main throughfare (Forest Rd 25) between Randle & the junction with FR90 on the east end of Swift Reservoir. Therefore you cannot get to Mt St Helens from the east side from FR25 to Windy Ridge via FR99. It's a less touristy scenic drive many asked about through the mountains between Mt Rainier & Portland or Stevenson, WA along the Columbia River Gorge.

Johnston Ridge is open. That is coming east on SR-504 from I-5 (Castle Rock). more »

Car Rental Sharing - Big Island, Hawaii September 29-October 5

My friends and I will be in Oahu Sep 22-28. They will be leaving by the 29th, but I will be staying for one more week (leaving Oct 6). I want to go to he Big Island, but it seems like the only way to go around is via a rental car. I am not a driver so this is a show-stopper for me. Anyone who wanted to share a car rental with me within the dates of Sep 29 - Oct 5? Otherwise, I might just stay in Oahu and depending on the budget just do a 1-day tour.

Major League Soccer Camps America

Does anybody know if MLS Camps still exist? I've got a gap year book from 2005 and the contact details and website information for MLS camps are all invalid, and so I was wondering if anybody had any knowledge whether they still run for gap year students? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
