San Francisco bike trips

My mom, sister, and I are heading to SF next week and were thinking about renting bikes for an afternoon. Any suggestions on bike routes that are not too hilly and that gives you good views of the city, the bay, or the bridges? Thanks in advance!

Time Zone for Hostelbookers

Hi Just a quick question. If I am using hostelbookers.com or hostelworld.com from Australia are the dates on the site according to the timezone/date in the city I'm currently in or does it have a default timezone (eg london timezone)?

I want to book a hostel in Los Angeles but I'm not sure if the dates on the website are according to my time zone or the timezone in the place I want to visit. For example in LA its currently 6.40pm on the 17th, and in Brisbane its 11.40am on the 18th so there is roughly a day difference - I'm just concerned I'm going to book on the wrong date.

I'm not sure if that makes sense, but basically I want to book a hostel which will be on either the 21st (Brisbane Time) or the 20th (LA time) due to the time difference - so when accessing the hostel website from Australia which of those dates would I book it on?
I've cross posted this as I'm not sure whi... more »

2 week Honeymoon in Hawaii on a budget?

I am just in the process of looking into a honeymoon trip to Hawaii this coming August with myself and the new wife. We aren't sure if we can afford it though, and would love some advice from anyone with experience there.

We would love to max spend 6K US (or less really). I don't know if it's worth it, or possible, to do Hawaii on a shoestring. We are able to rent a car, and plan on coming in from San Fran but no flight in is booked as of yet.

I would say our main goals are to: beach it and relax, snorkel (dive if it's not ridiculous costly), explore and see some local beauty, eat some good sushi and whatever the locals eat, see any good local live music that goes on, and party it up a pinch. We are in our mid thirties so you have an idea of age reference. Any other tips on what we SHOULD be doing there much appreciated!

we don't know where to go and how to split... more »

DC to Seattle roadtrip advice for military family move

I’m in the military and transferring across country this summer. I have a little extra time such that I might not have to fly and may be able to show the family some of the country. Wondered if I could get some advice on my proposed itinerary?
I will travel in a mini-van with wife and 10yr old boy, 8yr old girl. Family hasn’t done much hiking, but we wanted to see the beauty and wildlife in the national parks.
I have reservations at each of the stops—the idea was drive a day, see something/visit someone. But add an extra day to Yellowstone. Can't really extend much beyond current plan. I know the times I'm showing are just the travel times AAA is estimating-- got to add a couple hours for stops.
Figured we could gut out the first day of the road trip and so that is a long ride—planning on leaving at 6am to get to Chicago before it gets dark (hopefully by 7pm). Also figured at... more »

Portland, OR - 3 Days in October

My wife and I are considering a Fri-Sat-Sun in Portland, OR. We like using airbnb, and would like to get better insight into which neighborhoods would be nice to stay in. We would like to use the mass transit and want to stay in an area where shops stay open late(r). We used to live near Park/Grand in Oakland and live in Fells Point/Canton in Baltimore now, so neighborhoods like that.

Also, has anyone out there been to a Portland Timbers game? I'm not a huge soccer fan, but we could schedule the trip to coincide with a Timbers-Sounder game. ESPN says the rivalry is worth experiencing, but wanted to see if there were other opinions.

California, driving down 101 last week of July

Thank you all for help with my last question.
We are continuing to make plans here and we are looking into driving down along the Pacific Coast.
Will it be one long crazy traffic jam during that time of year?
Any parts that are better than others?
We will be in Portland roughtly around July 24 to 25th, then on our way to San Francisco. Trying to decide how to best break up that 10 to 12 hour streach.
Thank you all!

East Coast Road-trip

My friend and I would like to go on a road-trip from Northern New Jersey ending in Miami, FL. This is a drive we've made many times. The usual route is pretty boring so we are looking to do a little something different this time and make a few detours. We have 4 days to make it to Miami. Does anyone have any suggestions for places we can visit? We are very flexible with what we'd like to see. We are open to all suggestions. We've talked about Savannah, GA but were hoping for another stop before we make it that far south.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Happy Travels

East Coast Solo Travel - Meetup

Hey, I'm a 23 yo male from Scotland and i'll be travelling the east coast late august, early september. Starting in Boston then NYC, Philly, DC and finally Florida, spending between 3-5 days in each place. It's my first solo travel and I'm looking to arrange meetups with other travellers or residents when I'm over but unsure how I'd go about it? Any help/advice on the best way would be to arrange meet ups with others for activities like sightseeing, clubbing etc.???

Usa trip - East coast

Hi Guys,

I´m in New York at the moment. I´m travelling for 3 months. First East Coast of the USA and then the West Coast.
It would be nice if someone would join me on my trip or meet up somewhere.
I´m very flexible so it´s no problem to stay somewhere you would like.
I will leave New York on the 19th of June. I will travel to florida with the bus or the train. maybe also stopp in washington or philadelphia. So if you are also somewhere in that area it would be nice if you would join me.
I´m an Austrian, friendly 21 year old girl :)

Chicago area - ideas for a short visit

Hi!

We are on six month trip to the US and will be flying into Chicago on Tuesday 27 August from Yellowstone and flying out on Tuesday 3 September for Boston.

Any ideas on how where to go in Chicago and the surrounding area during our visit?

We are an Australian couple, 28 yo and working on a combined budget of $270 per day.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on where we should visit. Everyone says great things about the area!
Thanks! David

Santa Fe to Durango

We're planning to fly into Santa Fe and drive to Durango. We're from the East Coast and not familiar at all with the area. It looks like there's no interstate that goes directly to Durango...is it a difficult drive (in late August)?

My husband is interested in the narrow gauge railroad in Durango. Are there any other activities you can recommend in the area? We have 2 boys, 10 and 7. They're very active and interested in most outdoors activities.

Also, how would you split 7 days/6 nights between Santa Fe and Durango?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Lesbian San fransisco

We are staying in Castro mid week, don't need to go clubbing or dancing but would like to enjoy some type of lesbian culture. Are there any nice cafe bars or restaurants that are known as girl only/ girl majority hangouts. We live in Brighton, know London and Sydney really well, and are aware that the gay scene changes rapidly.... And that there are generally a lot of male bars to girl ones, so any little hidden gems would be super :)

Kentucky Bourbon

Hello! I will be driving through Kentucky from Toronto to Atlanta next week. We'll be stopping for a few hours at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. I was also wondering if there are any small, independent, bourbon distilleries somewhere along the I-75 corridor anywhere in Kentucky -- particularly any distilleries that offer tours and have retail shops. Extra points goes to any distillery in rural areas! I've done a bit of research into the distilleries and most of them seem to be clustered in the Frankfort and Louisville areas -- these are too far out of the way.

Thanks,
--
