USA branch FAQ

This branch covers: Mainland USA, Hawaii & Alaska

So many posts request the impossible - that a bunch of people who have never met you magically intuit how much you have to spend and what will make you happy on vacation, generally planning out your route for three months and helping you get discount flight reservations.

So, what can you do to get great travel advice?

1. Do your homework
The web is filled with basic information like how far it is from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, or how to get from JFK to Manhattan (all major US airports have websites with transit info). Google is your best friend. See the list of indispensable sites below. Get your basic info first, then you can ask intelligent questions on the TT and pick the brains of the many knowledgeable locals who frequent this site just hoping someone will ask about a romantic B&B in New Orleans or a baseball g... more »

Topic Locked New Visa Waiver Requirements, effective January 12, 2009

This post edited August 8, 2010 to provide updated information on new fees and to note the duration of ESTA validity. After September 8, 2010, a fee will be required to apply or renew.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization
ESTA is a free, automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program [VWP].

As of January 12, 2009, all VWP travelers are required to obtain a travel authorization via ESTA prior to traveling to the United States under the VWP.

All nationals or citizens of VWP countries who plan to travel to the United States for temporary business or pleasure under the VWP are required to receive an authorization through ESTA prior to boarding a U.S.-bound airplane or vessel. Accompanied and unaccompanied children, regardless of age, are also required... more »

Road trip from NYC area to Richmond va or outer banks

Really need ideas for a slower paced road trip , as in minimal driving but maximum activity between westchester county ny and Richmond va at least possibly onto the outer banks round trip

We are four active people mid 40s and early 20s , with mixed interests , theme parks, history etc

Love kayaking, active tours eg Segway ,keeping active - sleepy areas great for a short while but interactive stuff great for us that said however we will also need a couple of days to veg out

We have 12 days in August to have as much fun as possible any ideas how and where ?

Would appreciate any suggestions

4-5 days in Seattle area

Hi

My boyfriend and I are going to be in the Seattle area for 4-5 days in mid June. We're coming down from Vancouver BC, where we are staying with family.

We'd like to spend a couple of days in Seattle, and a day going to Mt Rainier but would like some suggestions about where else to go? It's our first time in the US and we don't drive - hence only going to Mt Rainier for a day. Ideally we'd stay there for a few days and do some hiking but there doesn't seem to be any option other than renting a car.

We're equally keen on the outdoors and quirky cool cities.
We just want to try something a bit different to London!

Thanks
Alison

Brunch in Miami Beach

Hi

In Miami Beach, I saw a 45$ brunch @ the Nikki Beach.
That's cool but I wanted to know if a less expensive brunch exists, in a restaurant with an access to the beach still.

Thank you for help.

If I want to arrive in Burlington, VT by noon on a Wednesday, what time should I leave the Logan Airport area? What is the fastest way out of Boston?

Parking in San Francisco

Can anyone recommend a good hostel that has free parking included in San Francisco? Or anywhere else I may be able to park for free? Thanks!

Miami

Last minute MIA trip in 72 hours, looking into it as much as I can but quickly stopping by here with some qstns, appreciate all info in advance!

Looking into all types of activities and wondering which options are best, as I don't have a license and I'm heading over with my mom who won't want to drive in an unknown city. So it'll be day tours and/or taxi's.

Things I've found that we'd be interested in would be the animal VIP encounters at the zoo's/aquarium, everything and anything Cuba-related (I miss my suegra's cooking, best Cuban restaurants??), skydiving, I think the coral castle looks cool, everglades, Key West plus glass bottom boat cruise, there's a Miami city tour combination with biscayne cruise and everglades airboat, jetskitoursofmiami.com (come with tour guide?? have never jetskied)

I'm there for a week. No, I'm not looking to crowd my week with day tours every... more »

Louisiana and Texas Road Trip

Hey

My boyfriend and I are flying into New Orleans on June 5th. We are planning on renting a car and travelling around Louisiana and Texas for two weeks. We are also thinking of going to a Rodeo in Texas.

We would appreciate any suggestion of fun places to visit. We are in our mid 20's and from Ireland.

Thanks :)

Amtrak trip through US alone

Hi!
I'm planning to travel around US by using Amtrak. I'll probably arrive in the end of August and go home in the beginning of October. I've a tentative plan, but I need some advice and opinions about it. It will be my first visit in the US and I'm a guy in the early twenties.

NY is my first destination and I'll probably stay there for 4 days. I'll definitely return later. Then I'll take a flight to SF and be there for about 4 days and I also have some thoughts about visiting Yosemite, since I've understand that it would be possible to do without a car. Want to see something more than the cities.
When I'm leaving SF I will activate my Amtrak (30 days) and go towards Seattle, maybe I should stop a few days in Portland, Oregon? I'll probably spend about 4 days in Seattle. But I also have some thoughts about going to Vancouver for a few days or Mt Rainer, I don't really know...

Tusayan to Grand Canyon for sunrise

Apologies if this question has already been posted but I cant find the answer. We are on a bit of a whistle stop tour so only have 24 hours at the Grand Canyon, we are staying in Tusayan (Red Feather Hotel), we will arrive about midday on the Tuesday and plan to do an afternoon walk and watch the sunset, we then want to get back the following morning for sunrise and then a walk before heading back to our hotel for about midday.

My question are:

1. how can we get from Tusayan to the South Rim in time for sunrise as from what I’ve read the shuttle bus doesn’t leave that early from Tusayan, only from the village. We have our own car, but I’m not sure you can drive all the way to the start of the trails?

2. I’m assuming when we arrive on the Tuesday we can get a shuttle bus from Tusayan to the park easily enough to do a 3-4 hour walk and then the bus back again af... more »

Luggage storage at San Francisco Airport

Hi
Does anyone know the cost to store a large bag at San Francisco airport for one day and (separately, some time later) for one week? I looked at the airport website - apparently there is a company that provides the service, but they don't list the prices.
Thanks!

4 day adventure vacation suggestions needed

My husband is coming back from an 11 month deployment and we will have 4 days of vacation time. We want to do something off the beaten path, but no laying around on a beach. Has to be in the continental US and stick to the 4 day time line, not a huge budget. White water rafting? Budget Windjammer cruise? I need suggestions of what trips you went on and loved!

Camping and Hiking Suggestions?: VT, NH, & ME in August

Hello! My partner and I will be in New England for 10 days in early August for vacation. We're looking for suggestions for best places to hike and/or to camp. We're day hikers (so no backpacking), but enjoy challenging hikes as well as more relaxed ones, and we're tent campers who prefer quieter, scenic spots over big RV camps.

We're also hoping to spend at least a bit of time on the coast--perhaps in Acadia--though we're thinking most of our time will be in Vermont and/or New Hampshire. We're also hoping to spend much less time in the car driving from one spot to the next than we will actually walking around. Besides hiking and camping, we'd like to get a taste of New England (especially fresh seafood, which is scarce in the midwest, where we live) and maybe check out some local breweries. We'll also probably want a day or two off from hiking, so if there are other sites we shoul... more »

Alaska - using public transport for 3 week trip, June

Hi Guys,

I'm off to Alaska on Saturday for a 3 wk trip & as the title suggests, I'm planning to use public transport to get around as I'm travelling alone and not on a massive budget. I therefore plan to stay in hostels wherever possible and will be taking my tent/backpacking gear (18kg's!)

I was thinking of bus to Homer, then to Seward (although Homer to Seward busses only run once a week?), bus to Whittier, Juneau area (via ferry), then making my way from South East overland to Fairbanks via Haines Junction & then back to Anchorage for my return flight via Danali Nat. Park. I'll miss McCarthy though if I follow this route.

Would be nice to do some backpacking/mountain biking/(kayaking maybe) and see some bears etc so any advice about where to go & how to do it on public transport/hostels will be gratefully received.

Also, is Alaska having a cold summer so far as temperat... more »

New York Girls Trip - best area to stay in?

Hi. We are two Aussie girls heading to New York to celebrate our 40ths and we are looking for a little advise on what area of NY is the best to stay in? We have had friends that have stayed in Soho and Manhattan and both said the areas were good for various reasons. We are looking for a "cool/hip" area that has some some funky bars and nightlife and eateries. Somewhere that is close to transport and good shopping. Asking too much?? Soho, Greenwich or Meatpackers district are what we are thinking. Can any locals or travellers recommend an area or a street or even an appt or loft to stay in? Thanks!

Portland to Olympic National Park - 1 week

I will be traveling with another person to Portland, OR and Washington towards the end of August for one week. I have never been to this area of the country before, and I'm really excited about this trip. We don't have much of an itinerary yet, other than this: spend a day in Portland, head to see Mount St. Helens and spend a night somewhere, then head to Olympic National Park. What I want to do is a lot of hiking and taking in the "great outdoors." We also talked about driving up the coast of Oregon to Olympic. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good 1 week itinerary? Is Mt. St. Helens worth seeing, or should we skip it and head to the Columbia River Gorge or McKenzie area instead, and then drive up the coast?
