York - 2.5 days

Hi All,
I'll be in York with work in mid-June and am hoping to take a couple of extra days. (arriving early on a Sunday afternoon, so 2.5 days free in York).

Just wondering if there is 'enough' stuff to see that is walkable to; say around the city centre? I'm probably going to stay out at the university which I think is walkable to the city centre (2 miles?), or there are good bus services. (unless you have a better suggestion)

I wasn't intending on hiring a car at the airport, but that is an option if it would be better than public transport/walking to see things.

I suppose 'attractions' will close about 1700 on a Sunday? So I might not have time to do much other than walk around on the day I arrive.

Not big into pubs/clubs. Theatre/cinema - yes, historic sights - yes, wandering about lovely streets - yes, art galleries - no, (traditional) museums - not really.

London hostels

We're going to be four 26 year olds traveling to London for a few nights (from the US). Looking for a cool hostel atmosphere, fun bar to pregame before going out and a good location. Definitely no under 18 year olds and preferably a 25 -30 crowd. Would be great if breakfast and other amenities were included (linens, wifi, etc.).

Any suggestions of places to stay?

help with itinerary!

Hi,

I have some questions to plan my itinerary using all public transportation for the first part of my trip from London to Ediburgh. I am having trouble putting it all together by using public transport and to get a variety of experiences and I would appreciate any info you can give me or changes of any sort. Thank you!!.

Arrive London, 8:30 AM, Heathrow--- Cotswolds, 3 nights.

(Are there buses that go directly to this area from Heathrow? Or, would it be better to take the train to Paddington and then on to Moreton-in-Marsh)? I would like to do some easy walks. I read of one out of Moreton.., another from Bourton..and one in Broadway. Hidcote Gardens. Any comments? Best base of operations--Moreton...because of transportation?

Cotswolds-----northern Wales, 4 nights.

(How best to get to this area, train from Moreton.. or)? I would like to see Snowdonia via Wels... more »

Transport options from London to Ireland/France

If you were going to go to Ireland and/or France from London, would you fly or catch the train/ferry? The benefit of flying is it's quicker, but are there other benefits of not flying? Is one comparatively cheaper than the other or would they be about the same? The time factor is not really of the essence. Is there a ferry from Ireland to France?
Thank you.

Travellers cafes in London

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering about London and if there are any great backpackers cafes or coffee shops?

I've travelled a lot in Asia and came across quite a few cool hangouts that were similar to the community areas in hostels but, obviously not IN a hostel. I personally prefer to get out of the hotel/hostel and seek my city/country information from locals. In some places around Asia they had really great little cafes with maps covering the walls, free books to look through and helpful staff to help me find or books things. It was nice also mixing with other travellers and locals.

Is there anywhere like that in London???

I've been to London a couple of times but never found anything. Mind you, our hostel community hangout areas were great.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Transport to Eden Project

Hi Folks,

I will be travelling with my sister and her 2 kids (10 + 8) in July. We are trying to find out whether there is any way of getting from St Austell to Eden project other than hiring a car.

Thanks

Cheers,
Mike

London vista - free (not the Shard or the London Eye)

At One New Change shopping mall.
Once inside, take the lift to the 6th floor, go left out of the elevator, then left and walk to the edge of the viewing platform. You get an uninterrupted view of the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. To its left, in the distance, see the London Eye, through the centre of which you can see Big Ben. To the immediate left is The Shard.

To get there, walk to the left of St Paul’s Cathedral, passing the original Temple Bar on the left . Keep walking ahead, cross over the next road and enter the shopping mall.

I found this info on http://www.londondiscoverytours.co.uk/7-days-in-london/ where there's also lots of useful info for Londoners and visitors. (I'm a Londoner but didn't know about this until just now.)
The site also has a list of film locations and of pop and rock locations too. more »

Cities/sites to visit in England

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions of "must-sees" in England. Cities, sites etc.

I've done most of the main tourist sites in London, but if anybody knows of any less-known sites that they would recommend that would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Where to stay in London?

Hi all.

My wife and I are going to London arriving June 21st and staying in the city for 6 days. We are budget travellers but we know London is not a budget city at all. We were wondering if someone know some apartments for rent in which we can cook to avoid eating out every day.

Also, this is our first time in London and we were wondering in which area to stay. We know London is a really big city and thats why we are asking.

We are a 30 year old couple, no kids, we are budget travellers. We enjoy visiting sights and nightlife.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Otto from ARG

cruise lines from Amsterdam -> UK for young people?

Hey all!
When I lived in Stockholm, I often take this cheap cruise line called Viking line to Estonia/Helsinki, where you can cheap alcohol and very cheap rooms with quite a bit young people.

After googling around, I found a DFDS line that goes from Amsterdam to New Castle, but it seems like a very family oriented from their website description. Anyone who's been on that line have any experience of the atmosphere? and Is there any other lines that goes to London or Brighton?

Thanks!

Coast to Coast Walk - best time of year?

Hi all. Thinking of doing the St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay walk across Northern England.

I know the weather is never reliable & it can rain & rain & rain, but is there a time of year when this is less likely?

I did the walk once before in Sept '98 & we had a couple of days of rain (not too bad), but talked to others who had been thoroughly rained-out in June. Was I lucky or is Sept as good as it gets?
