Travel partner to motorbike from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

I'm in Sapa at the moment but should get back to Hanoi tomorrow sometime. I really fancy getting a motorbike and heading south, I've got 4 weeks before I leave from Ho Chi Minh and biking seems like a pretty awesome way to go.

I'm travelling alone though and think this kind of thing might wok better with someone so if you fancy joining me that would be great.

I've still not got a bike, and will spend a day or two sorting that in Hanoi, with the hope of leaving by the 19th.

Cambodia (Laos) itinerary advice

Hi, next month I'm going to Bangkok and I'm trying to plan a short itinerary between Cambodia and (maybe) southern Laos, flying back to Bangkok after about 9-10 days. Of course I know that 10 days is very little time and I don't pretend to visit a whole country: I'm not afraid about traveling many hours, but I want also to enjoy a bit the places where I go.

One draft could be:
1 - Leaving Bangkok early morning - then 3 nights in Siem Reap (2 full days + maybe 1 half day)
2 - Phnom Penh, 2 or 3 nights (1 full day + 1 half day + one daytrip maybe to Kompong Chhnang - or it's better sleeping there one night?)
3 - Bus to Laos Border through Kratie - It's possible to catch a night bus saving one day? How many hours is that trip? I have read that the road has been recently improved. - Then 1 or 2 nights on 4000 islands.
4- Visit Champasak and 1 night there or in Pakse
5- Flying ba... more »

Rip Off Report: Happa Restaurant Sihanoukville

Tonight I went to Happa to eat with someone from my bus to Sihanoukville. Prior to tonight I had eaten in the Sihanoukville restaurant 3 times and the Phnom Penh restaurant 1 time without incident. In my wallet I only had a $100 bill (the ATMs seem to love giving these out) and restaurants are usually a good place to make change. Prior to giving the waiter the note, I asked if making change would be a problem and he said no. When he came back he tried to give me $11 change (my bill was $9) and said that I paid with a $20. I told him that I have him $100 and the person I was dining with gave him a $20.

When the manager was called over she said that he gave her 2 $20 bills. When she came over he walked off for a bit and my focus was on her not him. She then refused to give me information about the restaurants owner and said that because the staff was like a family and the waiter had... more »

Southeast Asia in 5 weeks - Advice

Me and my friend (2 girls) have decided to go travelling to south-east Asia. The dates are 22nd August to 26th September (5 weeks). We will be flying in and out of Bangkok and were thinking of doing a loop like Thailand-Laos-Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand. Would this be possible for us to travel to all of these in that amount of time? Any advice on travelling from country to country- like how much are flights if we need to travel back to Thailand from Vietnam because we haven’t got enough time, or are trains/coaches easy to use?

Any advice in general really or where is good to visit as it’s our first time travelling!

Hoi An & Hue Accommodation

Hi all, I've worked out all my accommodation for the trip all except 2 of the H's - Hoi An and Hue.
Budget is ideally not more than $15 (less would be good), central/city centre and would any have a pool for that price? Any recommendations?
Any personal experience?

Thank you

Vietnam to Malaysia on Motorbikes

Hey guys,

a few friends and I are planning to buy bikes in Vietnam and then biking all the way to KL, Malaysia.

Was wondering if anyone has done something like this? Don't know where to start. Need to figure out licenses, permits, border crossing situation, fuel cost, places to visit, etc?

If anyone with a similar experience could help out that would be cool or maybe point me out to a relevant blog.

Regards

Kamal.

Unsure how long in each at this stage but right now I'm thinking 1 month in myanmar , 3 weeks in Laos,2 weeks in Cambodia, 1 month in Vietnam, and 1 month in Malaysia .

Vang Vieng right now

Will be in Laos for a month starting on Saturday....2 nights in the capital and then touring by 'cycle.

I figured 7 or 8 nights in VV......I loved it there last february even though I am 25 years beyond the average tourist age.

I saw the posts below but they didn't really address what I wanted to know, which is - how are things at this very minute?

Many tourists? River low? What time is "last call" ........when I was there a year ago everything shuttered at midnight-1am, but I had heard reports that at certain times of the year the town is open until 4 or 5am with very little laws and that "the Island" is jam-packed with wild vacationers {I'd prefer to avoid this if possible}.

My room is sorted, the same place I had last year over-looking the island and the river and the mountains behind; bliss for 14USD per night :)

Also appreciate the comments about the... more »

Qatar (QR) to resume flights to Yangon

This was announced on the 7th March (old hat,I know)
Three times a week from Doha to Yangon using an A320? (two class methinks)
No schedules or prices on their web site yet-meant to start operating from October.
Great news for travellers from Europe if the pricing is sensible.
As TG have changed their Heathrow/Bangkok aircraft from a 744 to a 346 there will be a drastic reduction in economy seats on that sector-250 a day each way so QR could pick up a load of traffic.

Invited to a house in Vietnam

I got flagged down on the street by two friendly Vietnamese - Filipino people (brother and sister) who spoke English well and were curious about where I was from. When I told them Washington DC (closest place most Asians know), they said they had a sister who would be travelling there next month, and asked if I would talk to them some more. After a about ten mintutes, they invited me to their house, and offered to exchange cultural information. They left me their phone number, and asked me to meet them tomorrow near where we met - one said he worked there.

I'm a 24 year old male travelling solo, and my biggest concern is being robbed or finding out that it's an elaborate ploy to sell me something (damn tourist areas making me jaded!). Mainly, because I have nobody who would know where I was.

Should I go? If so, what precautions should I take?

Thanks in advance. more »
