just back

Just returned from three weeks there.
1. Everything is true about the money. Kept mine in cardboard. They are picky about fives and twenties as well. I would not take many small notes.
2. When you see something you want to buy, buy it then. You don’t see the same stuff at all the towns.
3. Best shopping at Scott’s market in Yangon and in mindon (north of Mandalay)..
4. Do not plan on any form of internet. In Mandalay could not get any, even at the internet café.
5. Mandalay has a lot of cool stuff to see.
6. Cycling is outstanding.
7. Bring ear plugs.

which country has the best natural areas?

So I've been in Cambodia a few months now, spending most of it working for an NGO near Siem Reap and am now off on my own, and travelling with an open-ended return date. I consider all of mainland SE Asia within my reach (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma), but I'm most interested in pristine natural areas, meaning primary forests, wildlife rich areas, forested mountains, wild and scenic rivers, etc. So far I've been to Ban Lung in Cambodia. I went there with an interest in trekking in Virachey NP, but after going to the park HQ there I wasn't so impressed by the trekking itinerary and the state of the forest and the price was too steep at $148 for 2 nights. I just decided to explore the surrounding area and found it to be equally unimpressive, what with all the rubber plantations and deforestation. Now I'm off to Krong Koh Kong which I hope to use as a base for exploring the Cardam... more »

advice on where to go

Hello again everybody! I'm about to fly in Yangon the 29, and as I have open schedule, I wanted to ask you fellow travellers what places I should not miss, even outside the tourist track, well the places that got stuck into your hearts :)
i would like to avoid flying inside the country, so I'll be taking buses and so on..

And whatever other random advice should pop into your heads, I'll be happy and grateful to hear!

cheers!!!!!

I had my handbag stolen on the train from hanoi to danang. It was found again but gone was some money my i pod my camera and my mobile phone. I made a report on the train to someone who took all my details and said he would give me a copy of it when we got off the train but he could not be found at danang. I am now in Hoi an but have been told the police will not make out a report as it did not happen here. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do I just want to get the money back from my insurance. Thats why I have it after all. Afraid now I won't get anything. Moving to Myanmar

14
WE are planning a move as volunteers to Yangon in August. Can anyone please tell us the current situation regarding internet access?
Also, is the dress code similar to Thailand (ie covered shoulders etc).
Finally, we need to embark on learning the language - again, is it similar to Thai?
Thanking you in anticipation,
Bruce

Mekong Delta one night accomodation

Hello

My girlfriend and I are having a short break in HCMC in a few weeks. We are planning on getting a taste of life on the Mekong Delta for 2 days and 1 night. Can someone please recommend:

1) Best town/city to stay overnight which is easily accessible from HCMC, and then on to the floating morning market, and other areas of the Mekong Delta; and

2) A nice hotel/b&b/homestay in such recommended areas, which has access to hot water.

Many thanks in advance

Which way to go?

Hi

Could anyone please help me? I'm flying from Nepal to Bangkok on the 12th April and have three and a half months to travel with my two teenage children. We are on a pretty low budget but would still like to go from Bangkok south to the beaches. Anyone know the best way out of Bangkok by train to a nice beach to start off with? Then thinking of going north to Laos, down to Cambodia and up through Vietnam to fly out of Hanoi to Manila at the beginning of August - what do you think of this route?

Also trying to stick with visa regulations and keeping the cost down how much time in each country? We are from the UK?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

mini hotel alley/street saigon

Seven years ago I stayed in a hotel I think was called Dong. It was the next small street down from the original Bodhi restaurant. Also close by was the Green Bamboo Bar. It was an alley full of mini hotels.

Can anyone tell me if this hotel still exists and how I find it on the web

Halong Bay - and viewing from the mainland ?

If I decide on Vietnam next month then I would like to see Halong bay but I'm not convinced about chuntering along in a boat for 3 or 3 days. My question is, are there any vantage points on the mainland offering spectacular views and photo opportunities ? I understand I can hire a kajak on the mainland and venture out into the bay but is the end of April generally still too cold for this ? Thanks

Prek Chak - Xa Xia visa run

Hi all,

Currently in Kampot and amd looking at extending my tourist visa for another 30 days.

Options are $60 via agent who will send my passport up to Phnom Penh; travel up to Phnom Penh and do it myself, or....

I have been told I can cross the border into Xa Xia and then return to Cambodia the same day. This sounded the best option to me as it was also explained to me that Xa Xia is within an "economy zone"!! and for this visa run I wouldn't be expected to have a Vietnam visa. The expat also explained I could spend a few days at Phu Quoc - again within the "economy zone", without the need for a visa, as long as I didn't go any further into Vietnam - obviously this would be my best option, but I don't want to turn up at the border crossing and be turned away etc etc.

So it's over to you guys; anyone done this recently, or at all?

Experiences and any info would be... more »
